I also dug a little deeper and figured it out (as is the way whenever I post asking a question ) So what I didn't understand was really any of the ins and outs of save game stuff for Demul. I was in possession of a .vmi file and what it turned out that I needed was a .dci file. I also needed the program VMUexplorer, so I could load that save onto my virtual memory card. Did that.
