Konami 4 player games

I'm so confused with this. I have a few 4 player Konami games that force you to one character on the select screen. I was able tick Extract ROM archives before running and that seemed to work with the Simpsons and Turtles in Time. However, the original TMNT games is still stuck on forcing you to pick player one character ( 4 player UK) I read through the Forum and someone suggested merging your own roms. I have no idea how to do that and trying to figure out clrmamepro as we speak. Can someone please guide me to a tutorial or any info how I can control which version of a game I want within the rom. I've also looked in the merging and expanding tutorial, didn't help my situation

The reason this is happening is because LaunchBox imported the 4-player version and this version emulates the original 4-player machine whereby you could only select the specific character for each joystick you are using. In this case, you are probably stuck with Leonardo. 

If you right click on the game and edit to point LB to the 2 player version, you will be able to select any character as player 1. I had to do this for Sunset Riders aswell.
