Well anyway, yes it's possible, the first thing you need to do is set up RetroArch as your default emulator within LaunchBox on whatever console you're trying to use RetroArch with(SNES, Sega Genesis, Gameboy, etc) and choose your desired core. If you have everything set up right, when you launch the game from LaunchBox it should run within RetroArch and if you have your hotkeys set up for a certain button to quit then it should take you back to LaunchBox when you hit. For me personally I have the "Confirm Quit" option enabled, and have it set up with my Xbox controller where the Xbox button quits out of it. So I'll have to hit the Xbox button twice in order to exit. But it takes me back to LaunchBox every time.

I am also trying to set this up on my nvidia shield but for some reason even though I have the quit on button combo set no combo seems to work. All the buttons work as normal within the game.

Now that's interesting! When you go to the "input settings" Try setting the "Quit controller combo" to "None" and turn on "Confirm Quit" and go down to where you see "Quit RetroArch" and set a button to it. After you've done that try quitting RetroArch from that menu using the button you've assigned to quit RetroArch. Because if it doesn't let you quit RetroArch from within the menu then there's a bigger issue going on probably within Nvidia Shields firmware, I just tested this on my Lenovo XiaoXin Tab and it works great.

OK that I can get to work the only problem is that I am using an 8bitdo SNES gamepad which has limited buttons so I was going to use the select+start option to exit but that does not seem to work.

Maybe it's something when it comes to combo buttons. You could just have select be the exit button but with "confirm exit" on you would have to hit select twice in order to exit anyways. There's not many games that require you to constantly hit the select button by itself so it should be OK. I don't know what's going on with Nvidia firmware and RetroArch in regards to the combo buttons but I guess this is a slight solution to the problem.

Don't know what I've done specifically, but escape exits the program completely for me. I'll dig in my config file and Launchbox settings and see if anything special is being done.

Are you launching RetroArch from Launchbox? You have to set the default emulator to RetroArch under the system you want to play on.

I got screenshots to correlate with the steps.

Step 1: Go to your console of choice

Step 2: Under your games list in the upper right hand corner, you'll see the three dots, tap that then go down to Emulator Settings

Step 3: Set the Default Emulator to RetroArch and the Default Core to whatever core you've downloaded within RetroArch

Step 4: Go back to your games list and run a game

Step 5: Quit RetroArch with your assigned hotkey(mine is the Xbox Button and I have "Confirm Quit" turned on which is why it asks me to press it again in order to exit). If everything is done right when you exit it should take you right back to Launchbox
