Installed vita3k /games/updates/DLC onto an external hard drive, unplugged the hard drive from my laptop and plugged it into PC  to add it to Launchbox and all the data is gone. The space on the hard drive is still being used but Vita3k is acting like its a fresh install. Anyway to recover all the data. If can't move the external hard drive without losing data, what is the process to replace the external hard drive when the time comes?

You may need to change directory settings in the emulator for the emulator to be portable. I believe some of the paths may not by default point to the folder the emulator it sat in and is instead of some shared windows directory. If you repoint that to an internal folder that path should remain the same making that possible.

correct.
And VITA3K also uses some storage directory which holds all that data (references to installed games/DLC's,...) which might not be the same directory on a different computer, so any files referencing to that folder on your laptop would not be on your PC

So do a search on your laptop to any of these folders...or check your settings in vita3k on your laptop.
And if you found it...then also copy over that folder to your PC

Outstanding! Thanks  Went to settings and it was set to my laptop hard drive, changed it to external hard drive and everything came back. Appreciate the quick response and all your help saved me a ton of time not having to start over again
