onebadveggie Posted October 10, 2025 Posted October 10, 2025 The title is the problem! But to further explain. So, in BigBox the only, no matter what I do, the only Starting Theme that works is Default. I can switch to another, and it'll even confirm that I have changed it to another Theme, but when I start a game it's still default. Meanwhile, when in desktop mode, they switch like normal when I go between them. I'm completely stumped as to why. I even went as far to reinstall LaunchBox and the issue still remains. Quote
onebadveggie Posted Wednesday at 09:01 PM Author Posted Wednesday at 09:01 PM (edited) An interesting thing I noticed after testing some more. Not only does Big Box Mode only use the default starting theme, but it appears it will only use the Default.xml as well. If I try to use, say PS2, and I have a Playstation 2.xml, it will only use the Default.xml. No spinning discs, no background images. This is frustrating, I feel like I'm missing something. Edit: Attached a video to help explain the issue further. Recording 2026-01-14 152254.webm Edited Wednesday at 09:27 PM by onebadveggie Quote

(just some background info...) For game startup themes, it will use the xaml file that has the same name as your platform. If it can't find one named the same, it will look for one named after the platforms Scrape-As value. If it can't find either of those matches, it will use Default.xaml. However, it doesn't explain why you see the spinning disc when launching a Sony Playstation 2 game from LaunchBox and not from Big Box. So call this a non-helpful fyi reply. Quote
onebadveggie Posted Wednesday at 09:39 PM Author Posted Wednesday at 09:39 PM My bad, I did mean .xaml! Brain wasn't working. But as you can see in the video above, the problem is very strange. I simply can't choose to use any other startup theme in Big Box other than Default, and only using the Default.xaml. These are the files in my Default Startup Theme, as you can see, they should be good! Oh! And the Default theme works properly in Launchbox Desktop as well! Just not in BigBox still. So odd! Quote

Just not in BigBox A couple quick tests shows switching the games startup theme in Big Box on-the-fly isn't applying the newly selected theme. But switching theme, exiting/restarting Big Box does work. Tested back-and-forth between Default, SlipStream and StageBox startup themes. Same results each time: The "old" (originally selected) startup theme still showed until Big Box was restarted. But... (regarding your PS2 dilemma) when I switched back to Default, exited and restarted Big Box, then launched PS2's Arctic Thunder, the spinny disc, spun. aka it used the 'Sony Playstation 2.xaml' startup file. So maybe the restart is the trick? "trick". NOT to be confused with "solution". BB not applying the changed startup theme seems like it may be a bug. 🐞 Which brings me to, my tests were all using LaunchBox version 13.25-beta-3. Yours? (I didn't test on any earlier versions of LB/BB) Quote
onebadveggie Posted Thursday at 02:22 AM Author Posted Thursday at 02:22 AM So, I went ahead and tested this out. But I will detail, and make sure I did it as I think. 1. Went into Big Box, changed Start Theme from Default to StageBox. 2. Exited BigBox/Launchbox 3. Restarted BigBox, tested theme, still stuck on Default. Still no discs moving. And I am using the current stable build, and I don't usually use the beta's. BUT that said, this has been an issue for about a year, on a new PC I built, so it's been something that's stuck around through a couple stable builds at least. Quote
