I go to Import roms, point at the folder, change to "Sinclair ZX Spectrum", choose retroarch but then I get a message saying missing dependency files. There are 8 in total. 4 are for "Pentagon machines" and 4 are for "Scorpion machines".

I have checked retroarch and under spectrum it has "fuse_libretro".

I have no idea why it is asking for these files. Can anyone help?

My understanding of the fuse emulator is that it is already complete, i.e. no BIOS or ROMS required, and that the pentagon and scorpion roms are Russian hardware clones.

So what I was really getting at is why is it bringing up this alert when probably in most cases they are not required? (Unless I have it all horribly wrong?)

This started because none of my games will work, so because it's complaining about these ROMs I assumed they had something to do with it ... but now I'm starting to doubt that and believe there may actually be some other issue.

That may very well be, I don't know.  But using the Fuse standalone emulator is different than using the fuse_libretro core inside RetroArch.  Per the document I linked above, using the core in RA does require the [additional] BIOS file(s).
