I have been using mame 0.273 with the BezelProject. Everything is working fine. However, I wanted to get a pair of 8bitdo controllers to connect along with my arcade buttons (ultimarc i-pac ultimate). I changed the default emulator to retroarch and installed the bezels for retroarch. Two things have happened. First, I can't get the bezels to display when I use the retroarch librerto mame core. They display fine if I use mame 0.273. I made sure to start a game, press F1 to get into the retroarch menus and in quick menu/onscreen overlays turned the overlays on.

The second curiosity is the controller. I use LEDBlinky on the arcade. Everything was working great but when I connected the controller, the buttons for player 1 don't light up. Love the ultimarc led buttons so you can display the button colors to match the original cabinet and get the audible operation of the buttons before the game begins. I don't see what I've done to mess up the player 1 buttons.

Anyone have suggestions?

I had the same RetroArch bezel issue. The fix was the .cfg file encoding.

Mine were saved as UTF-8 with BOM. I resaved them as UTF-8 without BOM, and the bezels started loading immediately.

If your PNG/CFG names and paths look correct, check the CFG encoding first. Don’t have any about the controllers, sorry
