Mame NoFiller Version 2 1.0.3

   (3 reviews)

About This File

Requirements:

A complete Mame Non Merged rom set for the version you are downloading. You must have this downloaded to your hard drive to use the batch file. If you have a seedbox you can use the included NoFiller v2 - *.txt file to copy / paste to a filter and only download those files if you don't want to use your own internet bandwidth downloaded a complete Non Merged rom set.

What is this ?

This is a batch file for people who only want to have a clean and streamlined set of games in their Arcade platform. It will copy out a curated set of roms from a full Mame rom set. The list of games selected was based off of input from people here on the forums, discord and my own personal experience playing these games growing up in the arcades back in the 80s and 90s. There are 434 rom files that will be copied out but there are some duplicates of a few games that have 2 or 4 player versions such as TMNT or Gauntlet for example, you can pick which one you want to use in your setup. (see below)

This is not the end all be all set of games of course but it is a good solid base to build your own personal set from rather than trying to pare down a complete set of roms. I tried not to include games that had really funky controls or light gun games though I did include some trackball and spinner games.

Included in the zip file you will find a batch file, spreadsheet document and 2 text files (1 list of roms and 1 list of games). The spreadsheet will allow people an easy way to maintain and add games as required. The rom list will make it easy to download only those files if you use a seedbox to get your roms from a torrent and the games list will let you compare what you have imported into Launchbox to see if anything is missing.

How to use this:

First you will need to download the Non-Merged rom set that the batch file was made with, using a different set than the bat file was intended for may or may not cause incompatibilities in roms. Then simply copy the batch file into the folder with all of the roms and double click the bat file, it will make a new folder within that folder and copy all of the roms into that newly created folder. From there you can copy that new folder of roms to anywhere you like and import them into Launchbox, be sure to update your rom path in your mame.ini to point this rom set location. You can now do whatever you like with your full set you downloaded, it is no longer needed for the NoFiller set to function, though you may want to keep a backup just in case.

Extra Notes:

Games that have problems importing into LB, will need to be imported individually.

Akai Katana - akatana.zip
Crossed Swords 2 - crswd2bl.zip
KaGeKi - kagekiu.zip
Sailormoon - sailormnnu.zip

Hello sir.

First of all, thank you for doing this! I am going to try it out. Second, I downloaded this file and the "README.txt" file says that set 0.200 is needed, but in the description above, it states that 0.201 is needed. Can you clarify which is correct?

Also, how does one add any new games to this batch file? I read the directions, see the Excel sheet, etc., but there are no specific directions on how to add any games users may want in addition to the ones you've loaded into it.

And thank you again for this effort.

Thank you sir. I added a question to my original post if you are able to answer it as well... On how to add any games I might want to the batch file...

Unfortunately thats a question i cant answer as i know nothing about batch files. :) @Lordmonkus should be around in the next couple of hours, so if you hold tight for a bit i'm sure he can fill you in there.

Although looking at the download files it looks like they are all in the no filler 201.txt. So im guessing you can add the games you want in there and compile it as a batch file, but thats from someone who doesnt "actually" know. :)

201 is the correct version but it should work perfectly fine with the 200 set, nothing changed in the file naming.

The easiest way is to simply edit the batch file using notepad++ and adding lines at the end for any games you want to add. Just refer the other lines in the batch file for exact context.

copy gameromname.zip NoFiller

The spreadsheet filee is for more advanced users who are at least a little confident with using it. I just provided it so if anyone wanted to really dig in and go crazy with it all the necessary files are there and ready to work with.

Thank you sir, it worked like a charm so far. That being said, is there a resource online where we can look up a specific MAME game by name, and then be able to see what that folder is named in our MAME collection? In other words, if I was looking for "Prehistoric Isle in 1930," how would I find what the folder is named in the MAME folder so I can add to the batch file?  Reversing that, I randomly picked this folder off your batch file called "copy tp84.zip NoFiller." Without some type of reference, I would have no idea what game that is...

Thank you again.

The spreadsheet contains that info, tp84.zip is Time Pilot 84. Every game is listed with its rom zip file name and the copy command for it.

Not sure if this is completely up to date or not but you can try http://www.mamedb.org/List.aspx

Another option would be to get a version of Mame with a GUI and point it at a full rom set, you can then go through it and look up games and see what the rom zip file name is.

OK, that was embarassing! The one file I DIDN'T look at... :)

Thank you. Between the Launchbox update & your generous time & energy to do this for us, MAME is finally doable for me.

I appreciate your quick reply.

One last question for Lord or whoever. I am using the link Lord provided earlier to quickly discover the folder name of games I wanted to add. My question is, if there are multiple "sets" shown, do you have to use them all?

See the link below for example. Top Hunter for example has "Set 1" & "Set 2." Do I need to put both in the batch file or just one or the other???

http://www.mamedb.org/List.aspx?q=Top hunter&og=false

By the way, I am using non-merged 0.201 set.

If using the Non Merged or Merged set just one. This is why I recommend using a Non Merged set to pull roms from if going for a hand picked set.

With a Split set you will need to figure out which is the parent and clone and if you want to run a clone rom you will need a parent to go along with it. With a merged set all of the games different versions are included but you still may need a bios to go along with it.

Thanks, Lordmonkus.  Great resource for streamlining a Mame set.  The forum thread leading up to this project was great too.

Updated to add the 2 player version of Sunset Riders, I only had the 4 player version in there before, no new games were added at all.

Just a very minor update, changed the Shinobi rom from shinobi.zip to shinobi5.zip, this version of the game has much better sound.

Please excuse the bump, but just wanted to thank OP for providing their list, and also provide an updated .bat file for the current (as of this post) version of MAME being 0.229.

This script also uses the split rom set and prioritises 'World' versions of games which are typically the parent rom. This list equates to about 6.3 GB of storage so pretty much reduces the footprint of an entire (split) set by about roughly 90%. There are no CHD's included (but NOCD hack versions are catered for where available), and admittedly this is a personal preference of games with a focus on releases after or around 1985 onwards, so may be missing some classics which can be added to suit.

Anyway, just wanted to pay it forward. Game on! :)
