scottinpa45
Hi, I'm new to LaunchBox and had a question about using an NES emulator. I actually loaded my SNES ROMS in LaunchBox a couple days ago using a YouTube tutorial called "Super Nintendo Emulation For Beginners with SNES9X" by ETA Prime and have been playing them on the SNES9X emulator with no problems. I used this same tutorial and followed the steps to install an NES emulator called Nestopia and although all of my NES ROMS were loaded into LaunchBox, none of them play. Any idea as to why they won't play and what I could have did wrong? Thanks for any help! -Scott
Lordmonkus
Can you give us a couple of screenshots of your emulator settings in Launchbox ? Go to Tools > Manage Emulators and then go to your Nestopia emulator, the Edit Emulator tab and Associated Platforms tab are what we need pictures of. Also are you roms in a zip file or no ? scottinpa45
I attached the screen shots that you asked for and the roms are not in zip files, they have .nes after the file name.
Lordmonkus
Is your NES platform on the left named Nintendo Entertainment System or is it slightly different ? I don't currently use the stand alone version of Nestopia but I will download it and see if I see anything with it while I wait for your response. scottinpa45
Yes, it's named Nintendo Entertainment System. Here's the link to the YouTube video I followed....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IO7X0_Cgkgc&index=1&list=LLqcrjzjSUVgVWHBKdHv2hiw&t=419s I used this video for the SNES 2 days ago and last night, I used it for the NES. Lordmonkus
Ok, I pretty much got it figured out. The command line parameter -fullscreen messes it up, remove that. Then open Nestopia and go into the Options > Preferences window and enable "Switch to fullscreen on startup" and "Autostart emulation" Exiting right now with Launchbox controller automation exit combo is still problematic for me but I am sure there is an AHK workaround. On a side note I would like to recommend the NES emulator puNES to you. It's a very good stand alone emulator and just as easy to setup and configure. http://forums.nesdev.com/viewtopic.php?t=6928
scottinpa45
Thank you, the games are playing now! The only problem I'm having is that my gamepad isn't being recognized in Nestopia, it works in the SNES9x so I'll have to figure that out. I will defintely try the puNES since you recommend it. Lordmonkus
You will have to configure the controller in Options > Input.
scottinpa45
I went into Nestopia and tried configuring the gamepad but it's not allowing me to. I didn't have a problem with it when I did it with SNES9x.
scottinpa45
I attached a screen shot of what I'm seeing when I go to Options>Input
Lordmonkus
Pick your controller from the drop down menu at the top right corner, then in the Mapping column double click each line and then press which button on your controller you want to map to that. scottinpa45
OK, I didn't realize that you have to double click, everything is working now! Thanks so much for your help.
Lordmonkus
No problem. Though I will still recommend puNES, it is extremely high quality and much more accurate than Nestopia. Also Nestopia hasn't been updated since 2008 while puNES is new and updated fairly regularly. Nestopia will play the vast majority of games just fine though of course but you may run into a few problematic games here and there. scottinpa45
I just downloaded puNES, unzipped it and ran the application file. I tried to configure my gamepad in it and it's not working right. Some of the gamepad buttons were registering and when I would click on the next to configure, it started scrolling through a bunch of messages like "no no no, ufff, i don't think, retry"
scottinpa45
It may be my gamepad, but not sure. It's a "Gamebound" brand that I got on Amazon. When I started configuring it, the A, B, Select & Start worked but when I clicked on Up and pushed up on the gamepad, it started going crazy. LOL I'll try it again tomorrow and maybe try buying a different gamepad if it doesn't work. Thanks for all your help!
Lordmonkus
No problem. Some off brand controllers may cause issues also if you have some other controller like a flightsick or wheel plugged in that can cause issues as well. I have a flightstick and that causes binding issues in some emulators.
VinceF
When trying to enable a save state or at least access that menu, for some reason, I cannot. I had been playing Super Mario Bros 2 and it was playing fine then and now, but I cannot remember how to pull up the nestopia menu bar. If it's supposed to show automatically, it isn't. Have no idea what to do to resolve this. I've googled, you tubed and looked at this site and others and am not finding out why the menu bar is gone. Any help would be awesome. Thanks.
