wagyan
I'm not entirely sure what has happened here, but for some reason the only games that aren't working are my Mame games. I'm sure they worked before, but perhaps I've managed to get them knocked off-kilter via some renaming of playlists etc. I'm stumped as I can't find any config files to point anywhere, and in BB I can open the directory for the roms as well as open MameUI64 correctly. Running MameUI64 for 201 with the matching split set. As posted in the title, all the games work perfectly through LB, but for some reason they try to load in BB before returning to the game select screen after a few seconds. I get the "loading game" message, then a black screen with the windows 10 hourglass disk thingy, then back to the game screen. If I click "Open MameUI64" it does so, so BB is pointing to the right places for the roms and Mame, but it's just not working. Every other platform is working fine (Demul, Dolphin, Retroarch etc) - just this one and only in BB mode. Oh and a quick edit to say hello and thank you for a wonderful piece of software! Lordmonkus
It's very strange that they would work in LB but not BB because BB uses the exact same xml files as LB. it's just a different UI presenting the media.
wagyan
Indeed, that's what's so preplexing. Perhaps something got messed up in the update to 8.9 on my end? Is there a way to reinstall LB but preserving all the emulators and roms? For example when 9.0 is released, is there a way to do the update manually? Lordmonkus
In your Launcbox\Updates folder you will find the previous installers, you can install over top of your current install without losing anything. Just be careful not to install to a sub folder of your LB folder.
wagyan
Thanks a lot - I'll give it a try
wagyan
Sadly no dice. I might grit my teeth and reimport the mame set, but hmmm... really not sure.
wagyan
Intriguing - if, via the BB interface, I open MameUI64 and try to run a rom from the mame interface, the same failure happens; black screen for a moment, then the instance of Mame closes without booting the game, spitting me back into BB. However, if I shut down BB after using it to open Mame, I am able to run the games. It seems like BB is interfering with Mame in some way that LB does not. Lordmonkus
Like I said that is extremely strange because BB uses the exact same xml files as LB, there is no difference and it shouldn't matter. I will forward this to @Jason Carr though.
wagyan
Yeah I completely understand the bizarre nature of it - there is no real logical explanation for it as far as I can see. Is there any debug mode or log that would allow me to provide more details?

Is there any debug mode or log that would allow me to provide more details? Hmm. My only guess is that it would be some kind of bizarre driver bug. Obviously Big Box uses a lot more of the video card than LaunchBox (though they both use the exact same WPF engine), but other than that I'm completely lost, unfortunately. I would first try making sure that you're 100% up to date on all Windows updates and drivers.
wagyan
Thanks for getting in touch! Sadly, everything is up to date and running fine, so it excludes that aspect. My video card is a GTX970 so I'm guessing that memory isn't too much of an issue. I'm in the process of building up a dedicated emulation PC so hopefully the anomaly will prove to be just that. I would like to get it working on this PC though. Maybe I'll do a clean install of everything.

Yeah the 970 isn't the issue, my old PC (currently my HTPC) has a 970 and it has not been any problems with emulation.

One other thing did just jump into my head though; I'm not sure of the exact setting but I remember one guy having a weird issue where MAME was not working properly when using a certain video rendering mode (OpenGL vs. DirectX maybe?). So that might be worth trying.
wagyan
Well, I took last night's Mame update as a sign to see if that side was the culprit, so I downloaded the new 0203 version of MameUI64, installed it in a new place on the drive, cut'n'pasted the roms from the 0201 set and redid the ini file from scratch. I then deleted the old Mame install and renamed the new one in its place, booted up BB and it worked straight off! Not entirely sure what happened with the old build - I'm guessing something got corrupted along the way, perhaps? Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you @Lordmonkus and @Jason Carr for your help - it was much appreciated!
