MAME - Can Launchbox extract CHD upon play? Do I need to extract all the CHD?

As the title says, on other platforms, I don't need to extract my ROM's and can leave them in their zip containers.

I currenlty have two folders

  1. MAME/ROM's/GAME.zip  <---ROM's
  2. MAME/CHD/GAME/GAME.zip  < --- CHD

Both have the zip files, however, I can only get MAME to work if I extract the CHD zip files. Is there anyway to allow Launchbox to extract the CHD when I play the game, so I can leave all my CHD zipped?

Mame chd files need to be extracted and in a folder named after the rom. There is no need for them to even be zipped. That folder then needs to be located in the folder where the mame zipped roms are. Unless you tell mame where to look directly by changing the file mapping.

Also, to help others, you don't not need to combine the CHD's/ROM's within the same folder. You could modify the MAME.ini to keep them separate.

# CORE SEARCH PATH OPTIONS

Ahh. I missed that part. You could probably make a second Mame emulator that is used to launch only chd games. Then check the unzip option in it.

Yeah, I tried that. It runs the MAME.exe and then closes quickily. I don't think it can reference both at the same time. It extracts the CHD but then can't find run the ROM.

I'm trying to do it with CarnEvil and it fails, unless I extrat all the CHD's prior.

Yeah this may only work with the few chd only games. So you may be out of luck.

Not a problem. Just curious.

It would be easy to update future MAME sets, instead of waiting for the 500gb+ CHD's to extract.

Very true. But considering how few working chd games there are I rarely update them unless the change log shows those games got updated. I havent downloaded a new chd in quite a long while.

Just getting into MAME and didn't realize that so that's good to hear! Thanks for the help.
