an0nymouse
Hey all, Just wondering what the best NES emulator is and if there is a tutorial posted to install it within LaunchBox. I have the SNES emulator up and running thanks to ETA Prime on YouTube. The latest NES emulator he has is 2 years old and that is for Higan. Is this still relevant? Thanks! I would suggest Retroarch for ALL 8 and 16 bit systems. Specifically the mesen core for NES.

Yes, I am using RetroArch within LaunchBox. I recently installed it so i guess i have the latest version. Is mesen core an older version? Retroarch works via "cores" simply go to online updater/core updater in Retroarch to see all the cores and download the specific ones you want to use.

Awesome! Thanks! Also, do i need to install an emulator for NES within RetroArch? I use SNES9X for Super Nintendo. Another question, do you know if you can purchase the $20 (one year) option for LB and then decide later if you want to update to the lifetime option? Mesen is the newest and the current popular choice as it has covers the most NES mappers, but the others also cover all the mappers used for commercial games. I switched from Nestopia to Mesen, but nestopia was fine as well. Snes9x isn’t as accurate as the other SNES emulators, but it’s serviceable and better for lower end hardware. Yes you can upgrade a yearly license to a lifetime later. Edited April 21, 2020 by Headrush69 Fixed grammar, darn autocorrect.

Which SNES emulator would you recommend?

I would use higan/bsnes/ or snes9x cores in retroarch for snes.

Just start Retroarch, go to Load a Core, than at the bottom of the list there should be a Download a Core option. All you have to do after is in LB -> Tools -> Manage Emulators and under Retroarch -> Associated Platforms, add Nintendo using Mesen core. (same as you did you Snes9x) I don't think you can go wrong with Mesen-S, Higan or Bsnes. Higan is the most demanding., I use bsnes-mercury-accuracy just because for me Higan doesn't add much I need and it's well established. I've played with all three and never saw any difference. (for me) Edited April 21, 2020 by Headrush69 Fixed core name

Sure does clean up some games, but it also comes with a heavy performance hit if your hardware isn't up to snuff. Does this core have any other changes? (other than that and widescreen options) Never mind, found the original Retroarch announcement and detailed explanation.
