Retroarch screen flicker when using overlays

So far when playing NES games with any core, as soon as I turn on on screen overlays I get random flickering. Lasts about one frame and looks like complete jibberish, ram addresses and what. Tried every setting available and I can't make it go away other than turning off on screen display. Any advice?
