PedgeJameson Posted Thursday at 11:56 PM Posted Thursday at 11:56 PM I had this issue before, and I cannot change settings like video effects without the ini. Any help will be great. I will return in a few hours. Just so you know I did not post and run. Quote
JoeViking245 Posted Friday at 12:09 AM Posted Friday at 12:09 AM From the Windows Command Prompt mame.exe -createconfig 1 Quote
PedgeJameson Posted Friday at 12:25 AM Author Posted Friday at 12:25 AM (edited) Do I run a command line inside the ini folder? And I may come across as thick, but how do I run a command line inside a folder again? Thanks!! I tried changing the dir, but that didn't work. Edited Friday at 12:52 AM by PedgeJameson Quote
PedgeJameson Posted Friday at 12:57 AM Author Posted Friday at 12:57 AM I don't understand, it's obviously running some ini because it has automatically saved changes to the things like the controls and video settings. Where could this be? Quote

Where could this be? Game specific settings such as those mentioned are saved in the /cfg/ folder. 1 Quote
PedgeJameson Posted Friday at 01:16 AM Author Posted Friday at 01:16 AM But I made general settings all across the board to the controls, like Player one coins etc. And those saved. No Mame INI. I even checked and deleted an INI from another instance of MAME I use for a cabinet which is the same place my roms are stored, to no avail. Where could it be? Quote

PedgeJameson Posted Friday at 01:30 AM Author Posted Friday at 01:30 AM Hey, it works, TY! Seems to have my controls intact too. And I love the filters. Are those all you added? So has anyone figured out what this problem is? Quote
launchretrogirl2562 Posted Friday at 01:36 AM Posted Friday at 01:36 AM glad to help☺️ i just changed some settings concerning visuals. got those from somewhere dont remember but i like 'em. controls get saved in the cfg folder. ([drive]:\Emulators\MAME\cfg) Either per game (nameofgame.cfg) or it uses the default.(default.cfg) 1 Quote
PedgeJameson Posted Friday at 01:45 AM Author Posted Friday at 01:45 AM Thanks, is there a way for people to do this themselves? I don't want to have to bug anyone again if I lose that file. For now, it seems like an unorthodox way to do things. 🙃 Quote
launchretrogirl2562 Posted Friday at 01:54 AM Posted Friday at 01:54 AM (edited) quickest way if this ever happens again: run mame click 'general settings'...and then click on 'save settings' This will produce a default mame.ini and ui.ini for you to edit if you wish. PedgeJameson Posted Friday at 02:06 AM Author Posted Friday at 02:06 AM How do I get to general settings from Launchbox? If I click open a game, I can't seem to get back to it. Or do I have to open mame from its folder, old school style? Quote
launchretrogirl2562 Posted Friday at 02:09 AM Posted Friday at 02:09 AM if you are running mame from Launchbox, and are in a game...u can press the 'TAB' key. This also gets u into mame. From where u can also save settings. And else,...indeed old skool...and just run mame directly from your harddrive. 1 Quote
PedgeJameson Posted Friday at 02:15 AM Author Posted Friday at 02:15 AM Are you sure? Because I think that might have changed. I go into Tab, then where? Quote
launchretrogirl2562 Posted Friday at 02:18 AM Posted Friday at 02:18 AM (edited) when you are in a game, u create an ini for that individual game. (the ini file will have the nameofthegame.ini) when u just run the standalone mame.exe from the mame folder and configure settings...u create a mame.ini for ALL games to use. For your case, u thus should always run mame.exe standalone if you want it to create the mame.ini and UI.ini Later u can customize individual games by running a game, and pressing tab. PedgeJameson Posted Friday at 02:22 AM Author Posted Friday at 02:22 AM I mean, how do I find the save settings option once in mame? I can't seem to even find general settings anymore. This is wacky. BRB Bathroom and a smoke. Quote
launchretrogirl2562 Posted Friday at 02:33 AM Posted Friday at 02:33 AM (edited) Once in a game, any changes u make will get saved automatically : if u make changes to the controls it will be written to a config file (cfg file) if u make any changes to the video options or others...it will get saved to a custom game specific ini file. Sorry if that was not clear. In a game...u cannot go to general settings. And running mame standalone U can. Every game uses the settings u made in mame.ini And if u want to have custom settings for specific games...u need to change them 'ingame' by hitting the TAB key when a game is running. MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) uses configuration files, typically named mame.ini, to store settings for the emulator and its games. Game-specific settings can be configured using separate .ini files placed in the ini folder within the MAME directory. When a game is launched, MAME first loads the general mame.ini and then any game-specific *.ini files, overriding the global settings with the game's specific configurations Edited Friday at 02:37 AM by launchretrogirl2562 1 Quote
PedgeJameson Posted Friday at 02:44 AM Author Posted Friday at 02:44 AM So no matter what, I have to load empty mame to get to general settings to do what you have shown in your picture. Got it. Is there anyway to add a MAME shortcut to the Launchbox for lazy peeps such as myself? 😜 Quote
launchretrogirl2562 Posted Friday at 02:49 AM Posted Friday at 02:49 AM this is so by design. Everyone who downloads MAME has a MAME install directory WITHOUT a mame.ini and WITHOUT a UI.ini As these files are user specific and are only initialized when a user runs mame and configures mame. Running mame and configuring it requires everyone to go to the general settings and system settings. Else how would users be able to configure their controls, their own video settings, etc etc Just make a shortcut to mame.exe on your desktop so it's there whenever u want to make any general changes in mame. 1 Quote
PedgeJameson Posted Friday at 02:53 AM Author Posted Friday at 02:53 AM Works for me, just being lazy. I had another unrelated question. But I will ask in a new post so folks who need help on that topic can find it there. THX again!! 1 Quote
