PedgeJameson Posted Thursday at 03:01 AM Posted Thursday at 03:01 AM As said above, how can I have it set in my Genesis core so no matter what, my new Genesis controller will always be player one, even when my 360 controller is plugged in? It sets itself to player two. My wife doesn't mind using the 360 when playing games like Streets of Rage 2 or other games, but I prefer my Genesis controller. Thanks guys!! And boy is it a difference!!! I would link the one I bought, but I don't want to break any rules. Quote
fromlostdays Posted Thursday at 04:35 AM Posted Thursday at 04:35 AM It's going to be a big ask. I'm assuming you're using Retroarch as you mentioned a core. The problem is that windows assigns a controller ID each time a controller is connected, and as far as I know you can't set a single ID per controller. In other words, disconnecting and reconnecting controllers is always going to jumble controller order, neither launchbox nor any emulator can fix that. So, if you set the controllers as you want them in RA and then never unplug them, you're golden. More realistically, I'd advise you set up some hotkeys in retroarch so that switching the player order within the emulator is fast and painless. I have Retroarch setup so that when I push my two sticks in, it automatically brings up the retroarch menu, from which I can adjust quick settings like controller order on the fly without having to touch a keyboard and mouse. As far as I know that's going to be the best path for you moving forward. Quick controller hotkey(s) to open the menu, set player, joy. Quote
PedgeJameson Posted Thursday at 04:39 AM Author Posted Thursday at 04:39 AM (edited) Can you explain how I set the quick controller hotkeys? See the thing is, I can change the player one and two to use the 360 or retro Genesis how I want and save it. those ID's have nothing to do with it, but it has to be when I am not using a core. fromlostdays Posted Thursday at 04:51 AM Posted Thursday at 04:51 AM First go to Settings / Input / Menu Controls / "All Users Control the Menu" and turn that ON, that way if you're accidentally holding the controller assigned to player 2 you can still open the menu instead of having to take the player 1 controller from your wife. Next go to Settings / Input / Hotkeys / "Menu Toggle" and set that to L3 + R3 (these are the left and right stick buttons). Lastly, navigate back to the Main Menu, then go to Main Menu / Configuration File / Save Current Configuration File and save it. Done. Both controllers should always open the retroarch menu by pressing both sticks if a game is open. So you can just pop the menu up and set the player order on the fly with little hassle without taking your hands off the controllers. Future proofing: this is a quick way to set up a menu toggle, there is a more indepth way to do this that allows you more freedom in binding different hotkeys to your controller, but one step at a time. 1 Quote
PedgeJameson Posted Thursday at 04:53 AM Author Posted Thursday at 04:53 AM Ok, but question, If I can change them and save them outside the cores, why can't I do it in core and save? That stinks. I will look into your settings right now, Thanks! Quote
PedgeJameson Posted Thursday at 04:58 AM Author Posted Thursday at 04:58 AM Ok, I was just able to switch player one and two in the genesis core. But it won't let me save because of the "core override" warning. Quote
fromlostdays Posted Thursday at 05:02 AM Posted Thursday at 05:02 AM Theres no point in trying to save the player order, like I said. I was only showing you a quick way to set it on the fly every time you need to change it. 1 Quote
PedgeJameson Posted Thursday at 05:06 AM Author Posted Thursday at 05:06 AM (edited) The SEGA controller has not start and select only start and mode. But L2 and R2 worked. So I just go into the menu and change whos player two on the fly then? Edited Thursday at 05:09 AM by PedgeJameson Quote
PedgeJameson Posted Thursday at 05:18 AM Author Posted Thursday at 05:18 AM "player order on the fly with little hassle..." That's the only part I need to learn. And thanks man, you are a saint. Quote

And thanks man, you are a saint. No problem, did you get the menu hotkey sorted? The part about windows and not being able to save the order per core IS the same issue. Every time you unplug one controller or plug in another, windows jumbles the IDs and therefore so does retroarch. So even if you saved it one way per core, it would be different the next time you plugged or unplugged either controller. It's just something we all kind of deal with, and it IS very annoying and unfortunate. Its not so bad if you have like an arcade board, because those controllers stay plugged in at all times, but beyond that the best way to deal with it is to be able to swap controller players on the fly using the controller - that I know of. 1 Quote
PedgeJameson Posted 3 hours ago Author Posted 3 hours ago Yeah, that's no big deal, two questions. Once we get into a game, how do we change who is player one? Also, if I am using a Genesis controller, how can I change the settings in retroarch to navigate RA's menu? Using a 360 it's fine, but B is yes and C is no, it's really weird. Thank you. Quote
