So this would be the error

Im really patchy on this stuff and not sure how the cmd line stuff works. Looks to me like it is ignoring your cmd line and looking for the bios/driver in the same folder as the rom. (I could be totally wrong...its the 3rd RA log I have ever read)

Maybe try disabling softlists in the core options

I am at a loss. I have the pegasus.zip file in the same directory as the game I am trying to load. Perhaps my games are named incorrectly? I don't think the newest version of MAME is as particular about that stuff as it used to be, but I could be wrong.

Yeah the newer emulators such as Cemu and RPCS3 may be difficult to get running at a suitable speed. Keep in mind these emulators are also very new and have a long ways to go in terms of optimization.

That is just massive overkill for emulation purposes.

As far as I am aware of only RPCS3 would take advantage of more than 2 core. The vast majority of emulators only use 1 and Dolphin can use 2.

It depends. For the most part, yeah, you don't need anywhere near the much. Some notable exceptions include the handful of PCSX2 games which require a powerful CPU to run smoothly (especially if you are forced to run them in the software render), some games in dolphin that smooth out a bit with a faster CPU, and the cutting edge not-really-ready for prime time emulators like Cemu and RCPS3.

A pentium dual core will be fine for a lot of stuff. The areas where you might struggle are

    1) Mednafen Saturn (3.5ghz quad core recommended)

    2) Higan/BSNES (3.0ghz or so single core recommended)

    3)  Beetle PSX Software Render (native res should be fine, 2x res might not be smooth)

And a few other edge cases.

  3. Due to some quirks in SSE a haswell CPU can be faster in some workloads (RCPS3 developer claim its 10% faster or so than kaby lake clock per clock), but for the most part the IPC for intel hasn't changed much sense sandy bridge, but the clock speeds have gone up. A 7700k is ideal for emulation, even at stock clock speeds.

To run all mature emulators at full speed, a 3.5ghz+ haswell or later dual core is the minimum, and a 4.0-4.5ghz quad core is ideal for the most intensive games (that can still be run at full speed at all).

Of course, if you exclude the 6th generation console emulators, and choose emulator that are just really accurate instead of uber accurate, then a pi 3 is just about enough. Depends on what you are trying to do.

  4. Still can't get anything to load atm. Anyone know where I want wrong?

  5. I can't find software for this machine anywhere. I have tracked down some pdf copies of the manuals, and there is some included software in the driver, but I can't find anything else.

This guy has a website dedicated to preserving the computer. He has a list of what exists and what he has found, and some tips on how to get things going in MAME, but he isn't sharing any of the files.

EDIT: I take it back, he has an FTP server. This is probably the most complete collection of software for this computer anywhere in the world. Awesome!

    ftp://neoncluster.com/Aamber Pegasus/WAV files/Games/

  6. This is a really obscure 8bit computer from New Zealand that I guess MAME is supposed to support. I found an image for the pegasus labeled pegasus.zip, and I found another labeled pegasusm.zip with expanded memory. I assume it has the bios and all the programs it comes with by default. When I try and load the zip file with MAME in RA it just crashes.

I also have read that it supports a couple more games via cassette, but I can't find any information and ROMs anywhere. Does anyone know anything about this system and how to get it up and running? Thanks.

  7. Blumsx in RA load .dsk images like any other rom. Disk swapping is supported in the quick menu, although on the few games I tried I could never get it to work. 90 percent of the msx/msx2 library are flash carts though, with only a few story games and quite a number from the msx magazine days being only available in disk.

  8. Media, metadata, and emumovies. I was writing playlists by hand in retroarch before I switched over. Getting media together for that simple front end was a bitch.

    Bigbox is pretty sweet too.

There is a lot of things I could say about LB actually. The only "problems" I have with LB is that it doesn't have every feature on my wishlist... yet.

  9. Retroarch will work fine without any extra configuration. If your arcade sticks are xinput, then you won't have any trouble mixing and matching with pcsx2 or dolphin either. Demul maps controls to specific device id and there is not way to do anything at all sophisticated in the command line. You will have to configure two or more separate instances for that emulators, with each control setup, and then load them in as alternate options for games or create multiple emulators.

There are several ps1 core in retroarch you can use, including epsxe, pcsx REarmed, and my preference in mednafen (beetle). I would recommend running ps1 games using one of those cores for the most flexibility with controllers.

I don't know enough about Cemu to comment. What you want to do can be done, it will just take some work.

  10. Judgement silver sword is a decent shmup. Klanoa is a pretty good platformer, although it switches rotation throughout the game making it a pain to play. Flash Koibito-Kun is amusing, and Battle Swan Collosseum isn't bad for what is essentially a two button fighter. If you don't read Japanese though, there really isn't a lot for you. Even if you do, it wasn't exactly the most amazing handheld. Still plenty of fun to be had though.

Yeah Mess is very hit and miss with 5200 emulation, biggest issue is certain games didn't have 2 button functionality.

Kat5200 is a decent enough emulator but I didn't like the way it handled resolution changes on a 2 monitor setup. I was using Altirra which as an emulator is quite good but required a bit more work than normal to get it setup. I have a small guide for it here on the forums and you search for Atari 5200.

The Atari800 core isn't available yet using the downloader that I can see but there is a thread over on the Retroarch forums with a download link. But like I said there is some setup because it is mainly an Atari800 computer so you have to deal with setting up some bios paths for it and generating a .atari800.cfg file. Once setup though I really like it for the game H.E.R.O. The controls are so responsive with a digital d-pad and the shaders look great.

I have never bothered with this emulator so it seems like a perfect case scenario where V-Sync off and a G-Sync display would shine :)

RA uses a framelimiter in addition to vysnc. The issue with vsync off is getting the frame timing right, not just for tearing, but because if it is off you get choppy visuals as well. For 2d games which only have a couple frames of animation per action, it is super noticeable. On a 60hz display, I don't think setting any kind of vsync in the drivers would help, but it might work fine if you have a monitor with a greater than 75zh refresh rate. I don't really know why setting a frame delay helps, I only know that for me it does, and very noticeably so.

Frame delay also helps a lot if you prefer to play with vysnc disabled in RA, although the smoothest animations will always be with RA vsync turned on. Again, I think it has something to do with the frame timing.

  12. It is also worth noting that Mednafen Wonderswan will be choppy in RA if you have a 60hz monitor, because the wonderswan runs at 75 frame per second, and RA disabled vsync automatically if the emulator runs faster than your native refresh rate. To get it to run smoother, use the highest frame delay value your system can handle.

    (The more you know).

Actually there is a new Atari800 core which supports the 5200 and is quite nice, though it does require some extra setup outside of the normal Retroarch.

Neat, I'll check that out. I know that MESS had problems with analog centering, but I don't remember reading about it one way or another with atari800 core.

  14. Atari 2600 - Stella

    Atari 5200 - Standalone kat 5200 (don't use RA)

    Atari 7800 - Prosystem

    Atari Jaguar - VirtualJaguar

    Atari Lynx - Handy

    Sega SG 1000 - Gens

    Sega MS - Gens

    Sega MD - Gens

    Sega CD - Gens

    Sega GG - Gens

    Sega 32 - Pico

Sega Saturn - Mednafen (standalone still recommended)

    Dreamcast - Demul Standalone

    NES - Nestopia/FCEUmme

    SNES - BSNES accuracy/balanced or Snes9X

    Virtual Boy - Mednafen  VB

N64 - Mupen64, Dolphin standalone for some games, PJ64 standalone for others (its a patchwork)

    Game Cube - Dolphin standalone

PC Engine/Turbo 16/turbo CD - Mednafen PCE Fast

    Gameboy/Gameboy Color - Gambette

    Gameboy Advanced - mgba

    Nintendo DS - Desume/Desume standalone

Playstation - beetle PSX hardware, with the software render (default vulkan, still experimental)

    PS2 - PCSX2 standalone

    PSP - PPSSPP standalone

3DO - 4DO core is good, 4DO standalone is supposedly a bit better (your choice)

    Wonderswan/Color - Mednafen wonderswan

    GCE Vectrex - Vectrex

    NeoGeo Pocket - Mednafen NGP

    NeoGeo AES - MAME

NeoGeo CD - MESS (Haven't tried it myself)

There are cores for the Oddessey 2 and coleco vision, but I haven't tried them yet. Fairchild Channel F, Amiga CD, CDI, and a few more obscure consoles can be made to run in MESS I have read, although I have not tried that either.

These are the consoles and handhelds. Let me know if you are also interested in the 8 bit computers.

The additional apps can handle this if need be. I believe (I say believe because I use m3u files) when you import multiple CDs of the same game Launchbox automatically compacts the disks into a single entry with their additional app for each disk.

Another way to handle disk swapping for PSX or Sega CD is to use m3u playlist files for emulators that support it (ePSXe does not) like Retroarch or Mednafen. You can then swap the disk in the RA UI or use of hotkeys.

Launchbox will attempt to create an alternate profile for each disk automatically. It is how I prefer to deal with multi disc games, as I find M3U files really cumbersome.

RL can launch controller profiles for each game though, and some other stuff that is pretty cool, and not super easy to do in LB at the moment.

  16. Dolphin needs to build a shade cache for each game you play. While the cache is building, you get lots of pauses and jitters. Stenzek implelented a solution that let's you build shaders on the fly! This is not async like ishurka, this is same frame.

To get it download build 5702 or later. It is a bleeding edge feature. Regressions in the build are possible.

There are three settings; off, hybrid, and exclusive, with exclusive being very demanding and hybrid much less so. Hybrid reduces stuttering while exclusive largely eliminates it, but you will need a modern top end card to use it ( gtx 1070 for 4x IR). The feature works best with non Nvidia cards in D3D apparently. Nvidia cards support it but due to quirks in the driver's hybrid shaders in opengl are less effective. More in the link. Read the top rated comment for more details.

  17. I have been listening to Jim Croce more lately. It's cliche, but he really did die too young.

There is something so honest and real in his music. I often pick up new artists and new genres to explore, but Jim is always somewhere in my play list.

wait this is awesome I would be able to move my computer out of my living room with this.  What type of lag is there and does it only work with steam or does it stream anything that's on my computer?

You can expect about 100ms with a hard line connection. A bit more latency with wifi, and perhaps some dropped frames. It is noticeable, but definitely playable. RPGs and strategy games would be fine. For hard core platformers and shooters I wouldn't recommend it, but you could adjust.

Steam only streams one app at a time. You can force it to stream your who desktop by alt-tabbing or pressing the windows key on the streaming machine, and then walking back to your streamed-to machine to play and surf. The image quality is pretty good at beautiful settings but there is some loss of detail. The maximum resolution is 1080p, although your streaming machine can be rendering at 4k and it will just down sample. You might get better latency streaming at 720p though, especially over wifi.
