bd00
Hi, Has anyone got Project64 1.6 working? I keep getting an error: "Attempt to open file failed." when trying to launch games. I tried the %ROM% parameter that I use on my HTPC set-up, but it makes no difference. I tried with Project64 v2.1 and it worked fine, but I have found v2.1 to be buggy and less stable, so I still prefer v1.6. Any ideas? Thanks
Jason Carr
Wow, looks like Project64 1.6 uses a completely non-standard way to handle the file paths; they add quotes to them: http://www.pj64-emu.com/faqs/general/how-do-i-use-pj64-with-frontends-htpcs-arcade-or-cabinet-setups/ They changed this with version 1.7 (obviously because it was a bad choice to begin with; it breaks drag and drop functionality and isn't well supported by anything else either). So, hmm. I'll add a to-do to my list to allow not using quotes.
QuotePilgrim
Someone else got it working with XBMC Advanced Launcher, and I just copied their method to get it working on LaunchBox. Make a .bat file with the following contents: cd "C:\Emulators\N64\Project64 1.6" SET STRING=%1 SET STRING=%STRING:"=% start Project64.exe %STRING% (Of course, you should change "C:\Emulators\N64\Project64 1.6" to whatever path your Project 64 install is.) Then, when you add the emulator to LaunchBox, you point to the .bat file instead of the emulator executable. Source: http://www.gwenael.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=56 P.S.: The installer for newer versions of Project64 is full of malware, and even though you can opt-out the unwanted toolbars, some malware will still be installed (like iWebar, Shopper Pro, and YouTube Accelerator), so I recommend you stick with either version 1.6 or 1.7, and download it from somewhere other than the official site, just to be safe. I use 1.6 because 1.7 refuses to work on my machine, no matter what I do.
Jason Carr
Ah, thanks! Good find. Assuming this works, I may drop my to do item to support it, since it's such an odd situation. Great to see an immediate solution to this. Also, good to know about Project64 versions; disappointing that they've loaded it up with malware. Welcome to the forums, QuotePilgrim. QuotePilgrim
Thank you. And yeah, that's a pretty nasty practice. A few days ago I downloaded the newest version, and I was shocked when I got like 3 warings from Avast! in a row. Then I received a few more warnings after I thougt I'd already removed everything it installed. Fortunately they were pretty easy to remove, and my system is clean now. spycat
Here is an alternative to the batch file launcher for Project64 1.6, if you can't get that to work for you. Project64 Launcher by Scott Rice (aka "Meris" on Steam Communities). This resolves the quotes issue and can handle situations where Project64.exe and the game roms are in different locations on your PC. The direct download link (posted by "Meris" on Steam Communities) is https://github.com/scottrice/Steam-Emulator-Launchers/raw/master/Windows/Project64/Project64-launcher.exe See also https://github.com/scottrice/Steam-Emulator-Launchers and http://steamcommunity.com/groups/IceRM/discussions/0/648814844716848346/ Put Project64-launcher.exe in the same folder as Project64.exe and set the Emulator Application Path to it. If Project64.exe is in your C:\Program Files area, then before moving this file there you may need to Unblock it. Otherwise it may ask permission to run every time you start a game. The Emulator Parameters box needs no rom file tag and can be left empty. You will most likely have set optional parameters (start in fullscreen etc.) within Project64 itself. You can now add games via the Rom File (Emulation is enabled) browser box. If you use Project64's ALT+F4 method to quit a game, then you will only exit Project64. The launcher script will be only paused and you will see it's little icon in your tray. Running a game again will open a new script. With the launcher controlling Project64, you should use the Escape key to quit a game. This closes the launcher which closes Project64. NOTE: If you're wary about using this EXE file you can always run Project64 as an application.
