SentaiBrad
Kriven said Is it possible to automatically download the manuals from this website? http://www.replacementdocs.com/news.php Anything is technically possible, the real questions are is it legally possible. Granted, I don't mean from each games IP holder- though the FAQ on that site does say it will take down any guide / manual if the IP Holder so wishes- but rather if the site will allow the program to access its database and service potentially 100's of downloads a day. If they do allow it and have an API it just makes it all the more technically easier. As for if it will be implemented, that will need to be Jasons' call and if the community wants this implemented. Jason Carr
Replacementdocs has come up before, I think it'd be great to have. But I don't see an API...so it would probably require scraping. I just sent a note to Sleepy who runs the place; we'll see if he'd be up for it. :)
Kriven
Thanks. This would be a tremendous time-saver ^_^
Sigord
Unfortunately http://www.replacementdocs.com/news.php only appears to offer manuals of games and not of just Launchbox. Being more of a serious user of the excellent LB also with over 230 very old DOS software as well as games, I would like a simple manual of LB. I do not have the patience of listening to someone slowly explaining something in long videos. Thanks
Jason Carr
Hi @Sigord, I'll consider that in the future. Unfortunately, development keeps me extremely busy for the moment, so focusing on documentation would be hard to do. Though I understand where you're coming from. I thought this was on the cards many, many moons ago? If memory serves, Brad started a wiki at some site, was it ever used? Could you not revive that? It is quite active here at the moment. Sigord
Thanks for considering creating a manual for Launchbox. When I explain I am 81 you will appreciate my problems of quickly absorbing instructions from a video compared with taking my time to slowly peruse through a manual such as with plenty of screen dumps. I appreciate your problem with software rapidly being upgraded. But I would have thought it much quicker to amend a digitised manual than having to record a new video. That is unless you have some very clever software for editing videos. Keep up the good work.
SentaiBrad
Editing video is something I am very good at. ;) bd000 said Jason Carr said Hi @Sigord, I'll consider that in the future. I created it, but there wasn't a need for it. I also kept getting spam e-mailed every single day. There is the Emulation General Wiki where I find a TON of info on everything I ever need. We could post one there which would make sense. RetroArch information is all in there. Or, we can wait till we have our own database. There can be an option in LB that just says Manual. It can either update in program when LB gets an update or it can take a user to an online manual hosted by the database.
bd00
The later sounds better, but you could always start with that. It will allow us to collect a chunk of the content now ready to copy/paste or whatever at a later date. EDIT: Also, your videos are great and I don't see why they can't be part of a Wiki too. He just prefers to speed read, different strokes for different folks. If they were videos and text, that would be more comprehensive and cater to more users. bd00
Wow, that was quick. I have to go pick the boy up from school right now, but I will have a closer look tonight.
SentaiBrad
I didn't make the page, but this is the wiki I use every time I need to figure something out. So either we can use this wiki or our own database. Which ever Jason wants to do.
Sigord
Is this the sort of thing you want . I use it but and have posted in it but I did not create it of course? http://basic.wikispaces.com/ and http://lbpe.wikispaces.com/ Gordon
Jason Carr
Awesome guys. Would love for a wiki to be put together. I can put it directly on the site if it works well.

I use it but and have posted in it but I did not create it of course? http://basic.wikispaces.com/ and http://lbpe.wikispaces.com/ Gordon There are dozens of wiki's out there, but the one I had chosen was actually more of a hassle than helpful. I honestly think our best bet is to have a wiki-esque page or pages on the site. That would be best. Or, to utilize the Emulation General Wiki and create our own set of pages there since its already established and gets a lot of traffic. Jason Carr
The LaunchBox site itself gets plenty of traffic, so yeah, I agree, it would be best to do it directly on the LB site itself. I am travelling today; I'll see if I can find a good wiki solution. I'm sure WordPress must have a good one. I know we looked a while back, but there wasn't enough interest to really continue it. Though now, I think it's probably about time. So I'll try and get the frame for it started, and leave it to you guys to populate it.
Kriven
Filling out information on a predetermined form to better serve the world? I can do that.
Jason Carr
And we have a Wiki! There should be a new Wiki item in the menu at the top of the site. My understanding is that anyone who is logged in to the forums should also be able to edit the Wiki. I created wikis for LaunchBox and Big Box. We can discuss if we should change this structure. I believe everyone should have permissions to create sub wikis under these two wikis by clicking the Create New tab on top. Let me know how it's all working for you guys. Looking forward to seeing it populated. :)
Sigord
I wanted to post below in http://emulation.gametechwiki....../Main_Page But I find the way anyone is allowed to continually alter the info, makes posting rather hopeless. If anyone wants to publicise below they are welcome. I have over 150 old DOS only Games as shown at http://www.sigord.co.uk/TEMP/DOSgames.txt many of which I might be willing to gradually upload to my site for all to download for free as ZIP files. So far as I can remember they are all Shareware. As you cans see from http://www.sigord.co.uk I tinker with creating my own software and web pages, so just as with my daily pages it will be quite a simple matter to continually update a page of Free DOS games, if anyone asks for a few games to be added to the list of downloads. I will start the page as soon as anyone drops me a line which Games to include in the web page.
