ckp
is it possible to have LB decompress with rar.exe instead of 7z.exe ? rar is faster
RetroArcade
Don't see why it shouldn't be able to, 7z can decompress rar files, it just can't compress them as such. I use rar5 compression on a handful of my sets. Edited September 18, 2016 by RetroArcade
ckp
LB uses 7z. So is there a setting for this?
RetroArcade
I don't know, I use rocketlauncher. Have you tried a file that is rar to see if it works? If not should be an easy thing to do on Jasons end. Edited September 18, 2016 by RetroArcade
ckp
It doesn't matter about the compression type and extension. Launchbox uses 7z to extract compressed game files. I'm wondering if there is any way to have LB use rar.exe instead. I'm thinking there is not.
RetroArcade
Sorry I get ya, misread it as you wanted to use rar files instead of 7z. I don't see why it wouldn't be able to if Jason programs it in.
DOS76
It currently only uses 7zip as the tool but it will extract .zip 7zip and. rar files I doubt that Jason will license a second compression program to include in LB but you never know. ckp
Hi guys, i'm not talking about hard coding it. I would just like the option as a user to have a setting to use whatever i want
RetroArcade
Has to be coded into the program one way or another, either directly or multiple user options to where you could define the paths, command line instructions, etc. I don't really see any difference in their speed to be honest. ckp
Let me give an example. On my usb 3 drive, if i unzip a .7z game that is a little over 1Gb, it takes over 1 minute to unzip with 7zip. If I zip the same game with winter using rar5 format, it take winter only 14 seconds to unzip it! 7zip can't even extract a rar5 format, so i can't use 7zip for that. this is a HUGE time savings un the decompression wait. however, i just tested and found that if i zip all the iso files using the "rar" (not rar5) format, 7zip can unzip them and it only takes 16 seconds! so, the end result is that 7zip is fine. the HUGE savings here is just zipping up everything with winrar using rar format. win !! Eirulan
Isnt rar a commercial program that has to be licensed, especially when wanting to distribute it with your own program? That would kind of eliminate the idea to publish it bundled with LB...
ckp
guys, i wasn't suggesting LB to use, include, or set rar or any other program. i was just asking for LB to have an OPTIONAL setting to allow us, the users, to specific any unzipping program and parameters we want, so that if someone owns Winrar they would have the option to tell LB to use their rar program in their program directory with their command line unzip parameters. it would only be an option and 7zip would still be the default with LB. anyway, from my experiment i found it is OK to just keep using 7zip only for unzipping. the super fast performance improvement is to rar all your game images using rar and .rar extension and compression. 7zip can extract a rar (not rar5) format OK. the difference in unzipping speed is phenomenal. i got a batch file script from the Rocketlauncher forum to automatically unzip and rezip all my .7z gamecube files, using rar.exe program and rar format. i own Winrar, but you could also just use the trial of it for this purpose. again, the speedup is amazing. wish i found out about it before. ckp
no worries! the good news is a WAY faster unzipping time!! woohoo!
RetroArcade
I decompress rar5 just fine with 7zip all the time. 7zip added suport for it late last year Edited September 18, 2016 by RetroArcade
Eirulan
You should *.zip them, that's even faster, haha! ^^ Edited September 18, 2016 by Eirulan

But it could deal with the regular rar compression.
