MAME LOSES WIRELESS 360 CONTROLLER SETTINGS

I keep running into an issue where Mame completely loses my controller settings.  I believe it's because I'm using wireless 360 controllers and if I launch mame without both of them on, then it wipes the settings.  Is there a workaround to prevent this?  I'm thinking of switching to wired controllers, but it's 2017 and that'll just break my heart.

Also, im using windows 10, I've run into this problem on multiple versions of mame and also multiple gui's.

I have not run into this problem but I also never start up Mame without my controller on. I have seen people talking about this before with wireless controllers losing their bindings when loading Mame with the controllers off. There is no real easy workaround to this, either make sure your controllers are on or use some sort of controller mapping software such as Xpadder to map your controllers to match your keyboard keys that Mame defaults to.

I don't know if setting your config files found in the /cfg/ folder of your Mame install folder to write only read only would be a work around or not.

I have had this issue with wired controllers in MAME too. Mostly I am playing games solo, but every once in a while my buddy calls over and I plug in the second controller and all of the buttons have been reset to default, even though we changed them last time. Maybe I'll try changing the properties on the config file to read only after I reconfigure the buttons for player 2 next time.
