Launchbox and joysticks

Hi. Having a few issues with my joystick, it seems I need to upgrade to Bigbox but I want to make sure before I drop money. At the moment the joystick acts like a mouse and clicking on a game changes the background but won't launch the game, is there a way to launch it that way without going to the play button? Kinda lame you cant move between boxes and launch with a button hit.

Then within the game the coin and 1P buttons are not mapped to the controller anymore, do I really need BB to configure those?

Almost thinking I'll deal with AttractMode instead because those above things work as they should without throwing money at it.

Launchbox is more the pc side (gamepad/keyboard) of things and BigBox (though usable with keyboard and gamepad) is more the arcade cabinet side and better with arcade joystick. I have never bothered with seeing if a joystick can be used in Launchbox since I only use it for configuration/set-up. 

As for your button mappings not working as coin and 1P buttons that is specific to the emulator and not anything that Launchbox or BigBox controls.

Hmm, somehow after I installed LaunchBox MAME forgot about the inputs I mapped. Maybe a coincidence, but it worked fine before the install. Anyway thanks, remapped and it all works fine.

Yes a coincidence, Launchbox never touches configs in any emulator you setup in it, it just passes the game to the emulator.
