Information Overload

I just bought the lifetime license today.  I've been arguing with myself about getting a MiSTer or a Pi4 or whatever else to do emulation, but those are niche, and/or expensive, and/or a mess to deal with, and/or just aren't powerful enough.  So, I went with some older-ish PC hardware I had kicking around (Intel I7 quad core @ 2+ghz, 16gig of RAM, and a GT-700-something-or-other, not a GTX, running under Win10 with a PS5 controller).  It just "feels" better this way for me.  I installed Launchbox about three weeks ago, and I've ONLY played a single TG16 game so far (Final Lap Twin) and I'm really pleased with it.

That said, I found the tutorial on how to import my games from GOG, which is great, but, I don't think it quite worked out for me.  None of the games seem to want to launch.  THIS thread isn't about this failure, but, how to find the information to do the fix on my own.

The "Tutorials" button on the main site takes you to a playlist on YouTube.  That, in itself is fine.  But, there's 168 videos in the playlist, as I write this.  I can't find anything in a reasonable amount of time that specifically says how to install certain emulators.  I've found lists of suggestions, right here in this forum, but not specifically how to get 'em going within LB.

Is there some kind of list on how to get LB working with these different emulators?  Maybe instead of a forum, some kind of public R/O wiki that shows not only the current recommended emulators but also how to get LB to work with the software?

My advice is to pick a system you want to emulate and work with that first, for example start with NES. Typically cart based systems are easiest to get setup and they usually do not require any extra files beyond the roms themselves to get it working. CD based systems most often require bios files to work and arcade like Mame it is highly recommended to get a full set of roms that match the version of Mame being used.

Start with a simple system and get it setup and working properly the way you want it to first, then move on to the next system you want to emulate and so on. For each system you can look up the tutorial guide on YouTube to help you out.

The first rule of thumb is always this. Get your games working in the emulator outside of Launchbox first. Once you know the games are working them import them into LB. This way if they don't work through LB it is easier to troubleshoot the issue.

I believe this is the most current RetroArch tutorial.

Edit: Contrary to what ETA Prime says, I would NOT leave all artwork checkboxes checked. Even with the image limit option in the new wizard, you could be downloading gigs of unwanted/unneeded images. Stick with the basic images first until you find a need for others. Basic images are: Box Front, Cart Front, Cart 3D, Box 3D, Clear Logo, and your preference for screenshots - I like Fanart, Screenshot Title, and Screenshot Gameplay. For now leave the EmuMovies images unchecked but select the videos (the EmuMovies subscription is totally worth it for the HD/HQ videos!).

If you're on the PC (not mobile app), YouTube allows you to search videos within the channel. Type in the name of the emulator you want.
