About This File

Welcome to Vertigo. A simple, text based, vertical BigBox Theme with an old Retro CRT nostalgic feel.

There are 2 different downloads:

  1.  Vertigo.zip - This is the theme, please place this in your /Launchbox/Themes folder (you may need to right click the zip file, go to properties, and unblock the the contents of the file).
  2. Vertigo Startup Video.zip - A Vertical startup video (created by @harryoke)

Theme Features:

  • Designed for a 9:16 portrait aspect ratio display
  • Tested uses 1080x1920 resolution, however, it should scale gracefully as long as you keep the aspect ratio 9:16
  • The entire theme utilizes a centered text list (only possible with @eatkinola's AO Bigbox Customs Plugin)

Watch the video to see the theme in action. Try it out if you like it, and let me know what you think below.

CREDITS

  • @faeran - Creator of this theme.
  • @eatkinola - Utilization of his AO Bigbox Customs Plugin, along with his help and code examples. Without his work, this theme would not be possible.
  • @harryoke - Creator of the Vertigo logo and the Vertigo startup video.

So now I'm curious how the theme changes (if at all) when the video preview isn't 4:3.

I don't remember how this theme reacts, but theme creators only have 2 options here.

  • We can just have it keep aspect ratio, causing black bars to appear to the left and right.
  • We can stretch the game play video to fit a space.

Technically there are other creative things you can do that would be extremely more custom to a particular setup, like special views for different aspect ratios for platforms or playlists (there are a ton of different aspect ratios).

This theme doesn't have any of that though.

Understood. Thanks.

I just purchased a license today to play around with it.

So far, it seems like you can't switch monitor orientation without restarting Big-Box, unfortunately. The theme looks "confused" until you restart Big-Box, after switching. Maybe I can ask Jason, et. al. to see if this can be fixed.

@faeran Awesome theme - I'm using it as a front end for a pinball cab with a second monitor as the backglass/marquee. Any chance you could update your theme to be able to use the new video marquee feature that was introduced in v12? Have a look at how the default theme handles to the new video marquee files - would love to have the same behavior in your theme. Thanks!
