COVERBOX FRAGMENTS VIDEOS: By DonellHD

DESCRIPTION:

I am quite possibly the biggest Coverbox fan in these forums, I've loved it since the first day I used it. It was my go to for over a year of retro gaming. After using it for a while I started to notice areas that could be improved upon, eventually leading to me wanting to do something about it. After getting permission from Faeran I started adding in all the stuff I wished Coverbox had. Its got all the flashy stuff of a modern theme but still retains that sweet warm glow of Coverbox. After a couple of years I started to feel the same way about my old fragments, all the new stuff Dave was adding to the CTC was missing from those old fragments. Now, here I am again doing that same thing. Redoing the coverbox views, its become my 2nd hobby. I spent many months listening to what you guys wanted from the themes, I took all that information and mashed it together into what you see here. It's been a long road, I've learned alot over the years and finally feel like I can bring my vision to life. Please keep in mind this is still a very early version of the theme, stick with me while I polish up and add more game list views.

To any newcomers, do not be scared off by the massive overload of information in this thread! It works out of the box with no extra work required. It works without installing any of the addons, or adding any custom options. It adapts to what you have installed and it adapts to what media you have. This will only improve as time goes by and people help me test the logic, eventually it will adapt to anything you throw at it. If you want to use all the custom options it can "seem" complex when in fact it's very simple. Making it was not, but using it should be. The custom options are for advanced users that want more out of their game lists. Give it a try, it might be your new go-to theme.

FEATURES:

  • Totally Re-Remastered Coverbox views
  • Even more details
  • Insane amount of logic added
  • View box back when in game details in 2D or 3D mode!
  • On-the-fly region changes to UI, cases, logos, buttons, icons, even the background!
  • Many many custom options, so many options.
  • Cart & Disc animations!
  • Now with a set of Global Settings so you can get your Coverbox just right
  • Seamless game details menu (just like CoverBox!)
  • EXTREMELY detailed box art options
  • More than just a Cover! Under the hood each Cover is a fully constructed box. Complete with inlay, disc, cart, wrapper, everything. When missing media happens, what you see underneath is authentic.
  • Custom startup & pause themes (still working on them for v2)
  • Now with Addon Support! Adapts immediately to what you have installed, and what you don't.
  • Background Videos are now installed as a addon! for those who prefer them off. The theme adapts and switches to static bg views.
  • Holiday Events Addon! New Holiday stuff added for those who enjoy a decent jump scare and good ol saint nick. (4th of July, Christmas, Halloween)
  • Now with proper Retroachievements Support! Get them cheevs (Thanks Dave!)
  • Background Music Addon! Listen to some sweet synth beats when you browse the platform list (can be turned off in global settings)
  • Now with Game Save/State Support! IDK what it even is, or how to even activate it, but it's in there.

INSTALLING ADDONS:

1) Download the addon you want to install and copy its contents to "Launchbox\Themes " folder. Check the settings page to verify it was installed properly.

UPDATING ADDONS:

Updating addons does NOT require updating of the main theme, or deleting the old version of the addon (you CAN delete it, but dont HAVE to unless i specify to do so)

Updating is the same as installing, copy the addons contents to "Launchbox\Themes " folder, overwrite the old version. Check the settings and verify that the version number increased.

Install startup/pause themes to their normal locations. They need to be downloaded and installed separately if you wish to use them.

Coverbox - Fragments Startup Themes

Coverbox - Fragments Pause Themes

SUGGESTED BIGBOX SETTINGS

Spoiler

This theme works best if you use the recommended BigBox settings. Of course these are all optional but they match up with the menus and give the intended experience.

  • VIEW > default startup > set to "platforms"

  • VIEW > enable "remember separate view for each platform"

  • GENERAL > enable "skip game details screen"

  • GENERAL > enable "hold b to enter settings"

  • CONTROLLERS MAPPINGS > show game details screen > map to "start button"

CUSTOM OPTIONS GUIDE (THE SCREENSHOTS HERE ARE FROM THE OLD VERSION. UPDATE IT)

Spoiler

This theme has a hidden set of custom options to further extend the Coverbox experience. These options vary from platform to platform, and are optional. Each option is listed in the "_CUSTOM FIELDS.txt" file included in the themes folder. Enabling custom options is very easy, they are applied on a per-game basis. You can select multiple games and add them that way as well if you need to bulk edit.

LaunchBox_vhEIWPUIQL.thumb.png.cace0f4f27b57d50a15b8c172182c0c0.png

1) Let's say I want to use the greatest hits label for Destruction Derby 2 because I like it the most. You start by editing the game(s) metadata. Right click on the game and select "Edit Metadata/Media".

LaunchBox_WMC8I6Mgtu.thumb.png.f43a960498fc716d639986af3eeba4a6.png

2) Next we need to select "Custom Fields" tab to the left, then input the option from the themes "Custom Options.txt" included inside the theme folder. It says I need to add Greatest Hits with a value of Yes

BigBox_2l48TqoM2G.thumb.png.46bc224d41d607c747842be295974cd2.png

3) Thats it! Your good to go. Load up BigBox and you will see the custom options are applied automatically now.

GLOBAL SETTINGS GUIDE (ADD SCREENSHOTS)

Spoiler

You can now customize a few global options to Customize Coverbox even further. Inside the "Coverbox Remastered\Media\_SETTINGS" folder are a set of .png files. These png files are named after the global setting they apply to. If you want to disable any of the features simply just rename it to OFF instead of ON.

example:              COVER STATIC - ON.png
rename to >        COVER STATIC - OFF.png

Alternatively, you can name it whatever you want. It disables it as soon as its renamed to anything but what I have them set to. All pngs that are labeled as ON will enable the associated setting
automatically. These settings are global. A quick rundown of what the features actually do is listed below:

3D BOX BACK - Uses the 3D box model for game details. When off it uses 2D version.

BG MUSIC - Enable/Disable background music in settings menu, and platform views.

BG VIDEO - Enables/Disable the background video used in some themes. Theme will use static BG instead.

CART ANIMATION - Enable/Disable the cartridge animations

COVER STATIC - Enable/Disable the static thats displayed when browsing the game list.

DISC ANIMATIONS - Enable/Disable the disc move/spin animations

HOLIDAY EVENTS - Enable/Disable the holiday events

UNPLAYED WRAPPER - Enable/Disable the wrapper overlay for unplayed games.

UNKNOWN PLATFORM ALERTS - Enable/Disable the Unknown platform alerts on the default game list theme.

Have Fun! I spent a GREAT deal of time making this so flexible. There is alot of logic and moving parts, i may have missed something because of that. If something is out of place
don't be afraid to let me know so i can fix it.

ON-THE-FLY REGION CHANGES GUIDE

Spoiler

The on-the-fly region changes will only work if a region has been specified in the games metadata. It will work automatically after specifying a supported region in the metadata, no more input required. I will list below the supported regions:

  • North America
  • United States
  • Japan
  • Europe
  • United Kingdom

SUPPORTED MEDIA GUIDE

Spoiler

COLORFUL PLATFORM VIDEOS:

This theme supports Viking's awesome platform videos. Clean, centered, uniformed....perfect. You can find them here. In order to use them with this theme they need to be copied to the correct location. First download the videos and make sure to rename the videos to just the platform name.

example:             Colorful_4K_-_Nintendo_DS_-_(1.0)_by_Viking.mp4
rename to:          Nintendo DS.mp4

Place all your "renamed" colorful videos into:

"LaunchBox\Themes\Coverbox Remastered\Media\_COLORFUL VIDEOS"

They will load automatically on next boot of BigBox.

Alternatively, you can add any video and it will play in place of the colorful videos.

SUPER GAMEBOY BORDERS:

The Super Gameboy game list theme supports Super Gameboy borders on a per game basis. There are over 800 of them over at vgmuseum.

I don't have the time to crop and rename 800 borders but maybe somebody else does. If your looking for some of your own just get the ones you need for your games until somebody uploads a full
set to the launchbox forums. These need to be named exactly as the name of the game and copied to:

"LaunchBox\Themes\Coverbox Remastered\Media\_SGB BORDERS"

If they are named properly they will load automatically on next boot of the Super Gameboy when highlighting said game.
PS: You will notice I already have some default super gameboy borders in there, those are loaded randomly when no game border is found. delete any you dont like.

Hi,

Would something like this be possible?
Even putting the genre or player labels a little higher and resizing the CD and box case.

1.rar 2.54 MB · 5 downloads

I see...that's what I thought you were asking for. I can indeed do that, although I feel some of the users might feel that throws off the aesthetic so it would need to be optional. Every platform (minus a few) have distinct box back labeling, I try my best to do 1:1 copy of them (if i can) so they all match up with the cover aesthetics. Throwing some game icons right in the middle kind of throws that part off. It also adapts to what info you have for that current game, collapsing and uncollapsing information icons on the fly. You can't see them all but that dock will expand to fully take up all that space (IF that game has all the info required) For psx there are like 10-12 info rectangles, when fully expanded it takes up every inch of that space. If i add the box/cd to that specific area it will move around inside the dock as well. I will try to implement this somehow in the future for you, it likely wont go where the info dock stuff goes though.

There was a typo in the wheel template for Playstation that was causing a crash for some people, it's been fixed. I'll try to get the fixed version uploaded today. (Thanks bmtkat)

Wow,
Well, it's just a whim... 😅I tried to do it myself, but I'm not very good at it.

If you could implement it in the future, I'd really appreciate it... Because I love your work.

I'll take care of ya cam, i'll find a way to get some icons on there for you sometime in the future. I'll just add a global option to turn it on and off. Right now people want the missing platforms remastered, I've been working on mainly that atm while i fix bugs people report (or i find myself). It would be a bigger edit but I could collapse the info docks and replace it with another version, that has those icons. And then they work like the 3d box back, one active and the other not. I'll figure something out when the time comes. Worst case I can make you a custom version with those 2 simple additions

Thanks vahn, to be honest I didn't get any crashes but i did experience a few long "lags" that I think is due to the ffmpeg issues. I did read that alot of people are having some trouble with that and it only happened to me a few times out of 100+ hours in BigBox. Im sure Jason and the team will get that fixed up sometime soon.

As for the sound I believe it's the same ffmpeg issue, in the game lists I use "selected item video" which doesn't allow you to mute the sound. In the platform list I used "User Selected Video" and it does indeed have a mute function, which I did use when BGM is enabled. If you disable the BGM in global settings it will then play sound from the videos in platform view 1.

Hope you guys get your builds back up sometime soon, I picked a bad time to release the early access i see.

Yeah I will have to wait until they fix the issues going on with ffmpeg because it is borked right now. I'll still keep up with testing your new updates though, the BG music and video sound, and video snap playback are just messed up atm.

I'll mess around with the bgm/video stuff for a bit today and make sure it's not caused by the theme. It very well could be i haven't tested that very much, it's not very complex so i just assumed it works properly after testing it. When I did the initial test of it I wasted a hour or so trying to figure out why the sound wouldn't mute when the global setting was disabled...it was the video the whole time 😅. The platform video I had set had some sweet synth music and i didnt even realize the bgm WAS off, the music was coming from the platform video. I'll still make sure

Hope you get your lb all fixed up soon

Confirmed the video snap playback  and audio seems to only be an issue with this theme. I am also missing clear logos for platforms and platform category's for some reason as well. The BG music isnt your theme though that is just launchbox being weird right now

I spent a few hours last night testing the bgm and video stuff. BGM does indeed mute when disabled, i also added a timer to the platform video so it doesn't play too quickly. I tested it in and out, it was working on my end. I didn't look too much into the snaps, is it only the gameplay snaps that are messed up? or does it do that in the platform view as well? All game lists use "selected item video", that one should work there isnt much you can do with it. I'll still do some more testing today, i have some logic tied to some of the videos, maybe its off or something. Is there any way you can explain in more detail whats going on with the videos? Does the video not play? its just black area? is it all glitched out?  muted? Let's zero in on the video issue and see whats going on, maybe i can isolate it.

Sorry about the clear logos, that was my fault. I changed it to read from the theme folder (instead of launchbox) and that wasn't a bright thing to do. Some of the icons are black in there so it hides them, or just doesn't display them because they aren't there. I changed it back last night when i noticed it, it will be available in the next update along with a few other fixes.

If anybody else is having video/bgm problems with this theme please post your issues in the comments, I'll do my best to get it fixed up asap. If anybody else can confirm it's working on your end it's helpful as well, process of elimination.
