  1. By the way, Demul has long been discontinued. If you want to play Atomiswave/NAOMI/NAOMI 2 arcade, it is strongly recommended to use Flycast instead. Personally, I prefer the standalone. And yes, I have HOTD2 set up using mouse as lightgun.

I'm all for innovation but I also firmly believe in "If it aint broke, don't fix it." That being said, please add the ability to use the old Games DB Layout. It's going to take a long while to get used to the new one, plus some features are missing...although the dark mode is a plus

+1. The new layout appears to be missing full history of contributions and Approved status no longer appears for all entries (particularly in image submissions). It's a bit more confusing.

  3. Honestly, none - as of the moment. There has not been a reliable Ryzen 6000 and 7000 series from any brand since last year. Multiple users reporting WiFi/BT connectivity issues and random reboots. I am still on the look out for a good one after 5800H as well.

For now, best not to get greedy with specs. A lower-spec but usable and stable machine outclasses a higher-spec but unreliable and frustrating one.

Thanks, k_rollo, I’ve had that exact one in my cart.  I’ve been worried whether it was too underpowered having watched so many videos on the Ryzen 7000 & 8000 series, but the price sure is right.

It will more than suffice for 1080p/60fps in most cases for high-end emulation. Frankly, most people don't really need beyond that for a good emulation experience. Buy a capable mid-range unit and walk away with more money left in your pocket. 😉

Also, your review is great and so helpful!

So I plan on hitting all the major 80s-90s arcades, and consoles up through PS3/Switch/360 (seems like 360 is about on par with PS3, so assuming it should work).

I like your recommendation of 32GB.  Do you feel 1TB SSD internal is sufficient and 2 TB SSD external?  Would a larger external non-SSD HD gum up with works?  Any particular brand of drive you’ve preferred?

Finally, do you think there’s any reason on these games to push beyond the SER5 Max?

Thanks again…really feeling better about the whole thing with the good guidance!

I have FBNeo, Arcade64 (MAME), Flycast, Supermodel, and Model 2 Emulator running on it perfectly for arcade emulation.

1TB NVMe is what I have and if you don't plan to hoard every single game (which you won't be able to play anyway), just add another SATA SSD to it. There are links to the storage and RAM upgrades I did in the review article as well (scroll to bottom).

Your food for thought: Strike a balance for performance, quality, and practicality. You don't need the highest-end machine for good emulation, you just need to know what you're doing. Have fun!

  5. I have not seen LB files in other places apart from the directory I installed it to. However, your standalone emulators would normally put system files in the %appdata% directory. This is why I also make sure my emulators are in portable mode as well.

  6. I have a Ryzen-based mini-pc called SER5 MAX 5800H. It can do PS3/Switch upto 1080p and XBOX (2x upscale). I don't bother with X360, so you'll have to test that one out. If you want my actual demo, look here:

The practical mix of internal/external storage:

    • Internal (SSD) - for games you are going to play at the moment
    • External (HDD) - for archival purposes

I am running the latest version of LB.  Will the one you linked to work with it?  It says that version is out of date.  Does that matter?  Thanks.

I recall in a previous release announcement that the latest LB already ships with .NET 6. If it uses .NET 6 libraries, then it may matter. Download it here:

Download .NET 6.0 (Linux, macOS, and Windows) (microsoft.com)

Try the .NET Runtime 6.0.26. Let us know how it goes.

Ok, figured it out. In Cemu disable the option to remember main window position. I think when you exit through the pause menu it forces cemu to close before it registers its window position and that causes the error to pop up. I enabled it and tried and immediately got the error, disabled it and the problem went away.

Thanks, I was actually looking to enable that feature because I want the window to remain maximised.

Yeah, I prefer 2D for boxes.  I have a few 3D cartridge sets.  I like it for that.  But glad you got something figured out in any event.  Something happened at least right!? lol.  I'm working my way backwards from Z.  I'm almost done with W.  Definitely have a long, tedious road ahead.  A few box fronts a day at least. Take care! feel free to message anytime.

I only kept the spine text 2D (90-degree rotation only) for readability, but kept the 3D boxart. Sacrficed a bit of form for function. Now I can make 3D boxes for any game I like, at least for Switch. 😄

I can only imagine the amount of time and dedication for complete boxart sets. Will drop you a message if there's anything (or just bugger you with my photo editing journey 😂). Take care too.

It's amazing what little things can end up being difficult lol.  I've just embarked on a journey to make Sega Master System Boxes, and I've already been tripped up by several things.  And they are pretty simplistic in design.

You should be able to get there with GIMP eventually.  It will just be a matter of getting the text corner pulled out a bit on the top right and bottom right so it looks like it's following the "3-dness" of the spine.  You could probably get really close just "eyeballing" it too.

I was able to learn DaVinci Resolve 18 a while back to create video tutorials for emulation in my YouTube channel. Nothing too fancy, but does the job of spreading the info I wanted to share. I hope to do the same with GIMP. Being a programmer suprisingly had benefits like correlating features from app1 to app2. Photoshop and GIMP are applications after all. 😄

I'll be marking this thread solved as the request was actually filled. If I need the text layers exported for the other games, I'll open a new thread. Thanks both!

(Not sure why on earth a space is calculated in alphabetization, but that's a different topic alltogether.)

Just to answer this question. It's because characters/symbols have their own unique values in programming, even "invisible" ones like whitespace, tab, carriage return, etc. The collation/sorting algorithms use these values to put strings in alphabetical order.

  12. @damageinc86 Thanks, I got the font. It looks like my main keywords would be "skew" and "perspective". Did a quick search on YouTube and I already see some tutorials available for GIMP. Your hints about adjusting the top-right/bottom-right corners should be useful in my attempt.

I must say, your resources and clues have been tremendously helpful and motivating. Thank you. As a programmer, photo editing felt intimidating to me. I should have enough information to give it a try. Didn't think modifying text would actually be the tricky part. 😅

If I'm successful, happy to contribute an easily editable XCF in the Game Media Dowloads as a free alternative to non-Photoshop users. Otherwise, I'll be happy to take you up on your offer. Will keep you posted. 🙂

  13. It's not exactly a direct 90-degree rotation or it wouldn't look natural to the angle of the spine. Another is I don't know the font though I can use a different one.

Learning to do the text layer in GIMP is in the bucket. Pretty pleased with how far I got with GIMP in a day, using a tutorial for Photoshop, considering I virtually have no experience in either. Just need something quick for now.

  14. Hi @damageinc86

Thank you for the fix and explanation. Really appreciate it.

Upon more digging, I found this comment from the GIMP Team:

    Screenshot2024-01-12091745.thumb.png.a5a5a4b0c75ee9366d7045b757cced8a.png

Opening the PSD in GIMP rasterises the text layer and disposes the text information, making it uneditable. I have 2 options:

    1. Open in Photoshop.
    2. Create a new text layer in GIMP.

As someone who won't really go pro with photo editing, I'm unlikely to pay for an Adobe CC subcription for basic PSD edits. I notice you are using CS6. Is that old version free to use on Win11?

  15. Hi @damageinc86

First, thank you for the gdrive as it is very helpful for total beginners. I've had time to spend today, so I thought I'd give it a go. I don't have Photoshop and my last experience was way back CS2 in highschool. 😅

Fortunately, I managed to find the needed options in GIMP, which I also have no experience on until today. I've gotten this far following the video tutorial (and sheer determination):

    Screenshot2024-01-11195511.thumb.png.1384ebff5f52d669f36686e4f1cc8e17.png

The only thing left to do is the SPINE TEXT, which I am unable to modify. Did some research and it appears the layer is no longer an "editable" text layer, but a regular bitmap/image layer (if I understood that right). I've attached the XCF for GIMP if anyone is able to make the spine text layer editable to type in the game titles easily or if I'm just missing something. 😅

Tagging also our graphics gurus @MadK9 @rodrigodn if it's something you can nudge me to the right direction with. This specific cover has been filled in Reddit, but I actually found making the 3D boxes fun and would be happy to do this for myself in the future. Your help is much appreciated. Cheers!

  16. Hey guys,

Full disclosure, I have an open request at Reddit, but didn't quite get the desired outcome. The request filler may not be experienced just yet, but the effort is appreciated.

Happy if someone can pick it up here as my previous request fillers in the forums have done excellent work. Will definitely mark as solved; whichever thread gets filled first. Thank you for your time.

    Cheers!
