I think we can stop making accusations and just focus on troubleshooting. If a score looks off post it and say it looks off so it can be looked at. I think everyone is well aware you will not be able to stop all cheating. It's a shame that worrying so much about cheating in an old video game led to assuming someone cheated and that person even created a post about his score being wrong.

It was Andyco47 who pointed out that Moon Patrol scores for example can be manipulated, which until that moment Jason did not think was possible.

Instead of scolding him, personally I think he should be thanked.

Yes, agreed. This was a last ditch effort to prevent obvious cheating, and it succeeds in preventing a lot of it. But again, we'll never be able to catch everything. Regardless, it succeeds in my original goals:

    • To encourage playing more MAME games by encouraging healthy competition
    • To improve discovery of games you haven't played before
    • To bring the community more together

I was joking earlier. Sadly you're never going to stop people from cheating (at anything).

The All-Time Leaderboards are where people will be trying to land their names by whatever means possible. I just set mine to show the Weekly Leaderboards only.

Seems less likely that people will go through the hassle of changing settings back and forth every time they play, so emphasizing the short-term records seems like a better way to get an accurate picture of how your colleagues are scoring.

I will definitely release it. It will likely just be minimal in detail like in the first images. The whole point of this pause would be to facilitate a quick look at game controls. Not meant for all kinds of game/platform detail. I was originally making marquees to show this, but now that we have pause I would rather my marquee be just for actual marquee images.

I agree, best to keep it to mainly just the controls. Users already have the game media thrown at them in most existing LB themes.

It can be done using a custom folder structure in the meantime. I will tweak a theme in the next few days (depending in work). Would require putting all the controller images in a custom folder structure and then the theme will point to it. Since it is not a coded binding built into LB the path would have to match what the theme is coded for. Or is someone decides they want a different path that person would need to edit the theme to point to that path.

Hey, if you manage to do that for us, that would be terrific and much appreciated!

Do you think it's currently possible to have it look for a game image, then if that doesn't exist, a default one for the system?

This can easily be done. You really do not need a custom folder. Just use the Arcade - Controls Information folder for this (slight downside is that Mame images will override any custom you make, I just do not download those). Would be nice to have its own folder though. It can also also be done by platform as well. That way in the case of like NES no need to make an image for each game. I have a theme that does this on my daughter's cabinet. Never released it since many of the added layer images are custom for her.  I could probably clean it of all that and release it.

Yes, ideally I was looking to have a folder created that isn't touched by any images by the database. Just an empty folder that can be used for any purpose the user or theme creators intend. I would hate to forget to uncheck the box during a metadata update and accidentally overwrite everything that I put in there.

As for system images, this is also how RetroPie works with launching (startup) images. First it searches for an image named the same as the rom. If it doesn't find that, it displays one for the platform if it's available.

Creating a startup theme that shows the controls for the game or system you're launching (pointing to a custom folder) would be a great feature for LB, which is why I want to see it integrated.

  6. Awhile back I brought up the idea of being able to display *customized* controller mapping images for the pause screen by creating one new image folder in LB. This one user folder could just be called "custom" or something generic like that, and could be used for people creating various types of themes for LB.

I wanted people who were playing my arcade cabinet to be able to hit a button, and the pause screen would bring up an image that I had created to show them the specific controls for the game or the system (see below for an example of what I made for my setups). Whatever image in that folder is named the same as the current rom is what would be displayed, so the image could be anything you like.

I didn't get a lot of support on the idea, but maybe we can raise the discussion again if there's interest.

Love this theme @viking, excellent work. The bright white was melting my retinas at night so I made my own dark version :) Out of respect to you and your hard work, I will keep it for my own personal use.955172829_LaunchBoxBigBox12_21_20193_31_57PM.thumb.png.5f278799986a33be24eb5e212ef119ee.png

Now that looks sharp. Hope to see that change officially incorporated into already an excellent theme.

What I specifically won't be doing for this particular theme is adding text below the boxes, because I feel like it will ruin much of the cleanliness of the theme (among other reasons, like the fact that I don't want to spend the extra time to do it for the moment). The good news is, though, as always, these themes are completely customizable, and I'm sure someone will step up and build something similar if enough people want it.

Per the text, I can easily add in a setting to always show the black text box on the bottom of the artwork (instead of only when it's selected), so I'll probably do that before release. The other option though is to just press control+A for select all.

    Thanks @neil9000.

I guess I completely missed the part where we somehow went from, "Sure, I can easily add that option" to "Nope, not going to do it" ?

Beta 2 is out now with fixes for all the previous issues with the new theme, at least as far as I can tell. We're also working on some new retroachievements.org features from the poll, which should be out in beta form here very soon.

Does that by any chance include being able to view game titles under the boxes? Or is that coming later? I can't seem to find an option to turn them on.

    Thanks.

When the option to use the same theme everyone was using yesterday before anyone even knew there would be a change still exist I don't see how anyone has an issue just switch your theme and you are at the same point you were when there wasn't any problems with the UI.

It's an issue because this is obviously going to be the new format for LB going forward.

This is why we have betas - to provide feedback. Not all feedback is going to be positively glowing.

Jason offered a short term solution, and the complaint is being addressed.

I do not think it is that bad it has to be called a step backwards. After all this is a beta. It is for users to test new things for the devs and provide constructive feedback. I do agree and prefer the name showing. But it is not that disastrous that the new look is a "step backwards".

Also for the blur if you do not like it just copy the default theme and rename it anything you want than edit the background view xaml and remove the blur or reduce its radius. I agree with Jason though. Without it, it is just too busy. Thankfully Jason made LB theme-able like BigBox.

Please don't insert your own hyperbole into what I said. I never called anything a "disaster".

I specifically said I liked the new direction, but I called the removal of game titles a step backwards in usability. That's constructive feedback.

As for the blur, I think it's a good addition for the same reasons.

Having the option to have the game title text always enabled would be appreciated, Jason.

However, the game text covers now part of the box rather than being underneath. In my opinion, the way the titles were displayed previously was better.

  13. Let me illustrate what I'm talking about. Can anyone here name all 16 Cave titles shown here?

Not just which game it is....the version as well (which one is Dai-Ou-Jou, Futari, Black Label, etc.)

If you can't, then you can see why this is not an enhancement. This is a step backward in usability.

games with no box art display text or at least should as to how I understand it

I'm talking about what your collection now looks like in the new version of LB (with box art).

There's no game title displayed, only the boxart. I see that as a major problem. The idea is to make LB easier to manage your collection, not harder.

now if we could only get the awesome new sharp edged/rounded cornered images but while retaining the displaying of font ?

I have to agree here. While this certainly looks nice and clean, it's not practical to hide the game title.

Just think of the users who have lots of international titles, like the Cave shooters with their covers written in Japanese. It's hard to know what you're seeing at a glance unless you somehow have thousands of game boxes committed to memory.

I hope this changes, because otherwise I like the new direction.

Important to note that the filter uses image groups, not types. To best see what I am talking about open LaunchBox. Go to Tools -> Options. Go to Legacy tab (should be there when you open the options). In the middle section find Images/3D Box Priorities. Click on that option and you will see a list of image TYPES for the 3D Box GROUP. If your game has ANY image of those types it will NOT appear in the 3D Box Missing filter.

    Oh, interesting. Thank you.

So in order for me to actually know if I have any missing 3D boxes, I would need to remove even "Box - Front" from the image priorities?

Sort of wondering if this tool could be more effective by specifically targeting the indicated media type (i.e. 3D boxes, instead of anything in the group).

  17. Is there a problem with the Games Missing Media filter right now?

I have about 20 systems across Arcade, Console, and Computer categories. When I run the Missing Media tool, I'm only returning hits from the first platform in my list (in my case Arcade).

For example, my Commodore Amiga games don't have any 3D boxes yet. When I run the tool to show missing 3D boxes, I get no hits on Amiga games (only arcade).

EDIT: I'm on the newest beta, 10.8 beta 1

Im noob in Launchbox, i downloaded your Colorfull theme and i have a question about "platform video set", for example i downloaded the file "Colorful_4K_-_Sony_Playstation_-_(1.0)_by_Viking.mp4"
where do I put this file so that it appears in the theme? I have to rename it somehow?

The name of the video file needs to match how you've named the platform in Launchbox.

The video file can be placed in either the theme's own platform video folder, or in the Launchbox / Videos / Platforms folder.
