There is a sound option in setting of retroarch, but it should work by default. Did you mess with settings? Secondly what are you running it on? it may need hdmi or phono or headhones??

I have not changed any settings

running from pc to Tv via hdmi which has worked fine up to this point

I am building a small rig to have a small system in my front room the gfx card is a lot smaller then my 1080 so I found I had to change the sound driver to dsound

I have not used Amazon pay to buy Bigbox, but I have used it for other things like Humble Bundles, and it worked just fine, you will just get a Amazon charge on your card rather than a Launchbox one.
