CalmGamer
Hi, I’m having an annoying issue with big box which hopefully someone can help me with. for some reason when I play a game(I only have Mame at moment) bigbox will suddenly do an equivalent of an alt tab and bring itself to the foreground. I can hear the game still playing in the background and have to alt tab back to it. it has done this without me touching any controls so I’m not sending and keystroke to trigger it. ive also tried deactivating mouse across all platforms but that didn’t help. I’ve also turned off startup and game over screens in case this was causing a focus issue. Thanks
wallmachine
you're just going to have to deal with it

You might try turning on just the startup screens to see if it helps. Windows can be finicky at times with focus, and sadly it could be caused by any number of things. See if turning only the startup screens on helps. If that doesn't help, then try exiting out of any and all applications that might be running in the background to see if anything is conflicting with focus. Also, what version of Windows are you running?
CalmGamer
I have the latest windows 10 with LaunchBox 10.10 and ledblinky. That’s all I have on the machine I tried turning on the game loading screen but it immediately popped up a game over screen and moved the Mame window into the background (the game wasn’t even over). I also tried turning back on the big box splash screen to see if that would give focus. It’s certainly a weird and frustrating problem. Jason Carr
Hmm, yeah, it's like there's something force focusing Big Box and not allowing MAME to be focused. Are you using any scripts to launch MAME? What are your MAME emulator settings?
CalmGamer
Everything is stock. I didn’t touch any of the default settings as far as I’m aware. ive included some screenshots. I thought it may have been a mouse issue as even when hidden, the mouse highlights items in the menus but I did switch off mouse options and it’s still having issues. thanks
Jason Carr
Yeah, that looks all stock to me. All I can figure is that there's some kind of a weird issue with drivers or something, but I know that doesn't help. Are your MAME settings stock? Do you have the same issue when you run MAME from LaunchBox?
CalmGamer
Yes. It happens in LaunchBox too. im going to try run Mame on its own In case that’s where the issue is.
CalmGamer
It does appear to be a Mame or windows issue. I ran Mame and it occasionally will just minimize itself even if I’m not touching the controls. Super strange.
Jason Carr
Yeah, that's definitely super strange. Good job sleuthing that one out though. That does seem to suggest that it's likely a driver issue or something, I would guess. I would first make sure Windows is all the way up to date, and then look for driver updates, especially video drivers to see if that makes any kind of a difference. CalmGamer
Yeah, I’m all up to date and I’ve tried to deactivate any windows shortcuts. Does seem to be a windows problem. lots of people are complaining about it.
Jason Carr
Can you link me to it?
CalmGamer
There are tons out there. Here is one. I tried the fixes suggested and it didn’t help https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/games_windows_10/windows-10-minimizing-any-games-automatically-at/7f9fba10-fb15-41f1-8c3b-a2e8e8542b8f
Jason Carr
I see, thanks. Was just curious about the details of the issue. I can't say I've experienced that myself, so I'm still not sure why it would be happening or how to fix it. It looks like usually it's caused by a background app, but if you haven't installed anything else, I'm not sure what that would be. I would try disabling OneDrive and anything else that you can find in Task Manager that could be causing the problem. The Startup tab in Task Manager will let you disable all of your startup apps, and typically you don't need any of them. Then if you reboot, you can see if you still have the problem. alanjfogarty
Happening in Sega Model 2 emulator, Supermodel and Mednafen as well. I've been experiencing this same issue, only discovered it in the last few days. Coincided with upgrading Windows OS along with LB 10.10. Prior to upgrading I keep my PC offline (which is dedicated just for running LB) so periodically connect to run updates while taking my own a back up of my LB folder just in case. I've concluded this one is definitely a windows issue. Tried a bunch of graphics driver clean-up utilities but nothing effective unfortunately. Tried rolling back to LB 10.9, .8.7.6. etc, all installations get tripped with the same issue... a few seconds into running a sega model 2 game like daytona USA i get through the first few seconds of selection screens and then big box pops up in front. Audio continuing and the emulator running the task bar. I tend to notice if play other emulators first like PSX, or retroach and then comeback to try model 2 or model 3 it will run stable, as before. So this seems to be an issue at worst when the PC is freshly booted. I have a bigbox running the startup menu to launch me straight in. Undoubtedly a windows OS update-induced issue, which can't be rolled back. Will try Jason's suggestions tonight on the taskbar. If there's any logging utility you would recommend i install which logs processes running i would be happy to try that and report my findings back to this group. Spent about 5-6 hours on this already. If i can get this fixed it will be lesson-learned on connecting to receive any any windows updates from now on! Specifically I disabled; Google Drive sync, Microsoft one drive, Realtec HD audio universal service, Windows security Notification icon. I also had two big box start-up icons, and I disabled the one listed as having “no impact”. do you still have the same issue after these changes? CalmGamer
I will try this later tonight and report back. I think it is mostly happening upon first boot so there must be something stealing focus.
CalmGamer
I can’t call it a definitive test but I disabled one drive, windows security and HD sound and so far it hasn’t lost focus on me in 20mins of playing. I may reactivate windows security at some point and see if it returns.

You can also add an exclusion to BigBox.exe and LaunchBox.exe inside of Windows Security settings so that way Windows Security will not scan those files upon startup. Might be worth a shot. That way you want have to disable Windows Security entirely. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4028485/windows-10-add-an-exclusion-to-windows-security

I’m not sure if adding bigbox.exe and LaunchBox.exe will solve everything as it used to present the same issue when i run the emulators directly... so I’m guessing we would need to white list these + all underlying emulators as well.
