Hello, I was wondering if it was possible to sort my games (emulator, arcade, PC) by game series? For example, launchbox could create a Mario playlist and all my Mario games would appear on it, or even have my games categorized (e.g., platform, action, etc.) and in this category it would create playlists of game series (Mario for example?), thanks in advance.

Hi There,

Thanks for the question!

LaunchBox does include Series as one of the editable metadata fields for games. However, outside of arcade titles (where that data is automatically populated from MAME), you’ll need to manually assign the series for your games.

To do this, simply right-click on a game, choose Edit, and fill out the Series field. You can also apply this in bulk by selecting multiple games, right-clicking, and editing them all at once.

Once you’ve assigned series values to your games, you can switch the view in LaunchBox from Platform Categories to Series to browse your collection organized by series.

Additionally, the Series field can be used to sort games. For example, when creating a playlist, under the Sort Games By dropdown, you can choose Series to group the games in that playlist accordingly.

Lastly, you can even create an auto-populating playlist based on a game series. For instance, if you’d like to create a playlist that includes all Mario games, you could set the filter to Series > Contains, and then list the series names you’d like to include.

Hope that helps, give me a shout if you have any further questions.

Cheers,

If you wish you add "Series" metadata to non-Arcade platforms, C-Beats has done a ton of work adding them to his platforms and has shared them in the link below. The metadata he's added [to approximately 30 platforms. So far.] include:

  • Series
  • Genre / Sub-Genre pair (similar to MAME) (All games have a SINGLE pair assigned)
  • Custom Field: Based On (for games that are based on another type of media like a movie or TV series)
  • Custom Field: Franchise

In his description, he's included a link to a plugin that can add [copy] this metadata into your existing collection.

Note that if you use my metadata Series and Franchise are two separate fields with distinct meanings. Franchise is all games under a specific IP. For example Mario Bros is a franchise that houses all Mario games. Series is specific games that are designed to be played in a series (or are labeled as such). For example the SMB trilogy for NES is labeled "Super Mario Bros. (NES)". The data I have will give a baseline for what you're asking but it sounds like the field you'd want to utilize more is Franchise in my data dump and not series.
