RetroAchievement Badges

Version 2.3.6 was the last update for this plugin.

(Sept. 2024) This plugin is broken and is no longer supported.

As of LaunchBox version 13.2 (Feb. 27, 2023), Achievement Badges are supported directly in LaunchBox.
To enable: click View < Badges < Game Attributes < Enable Achievements.

I wish to give a huge thanks to @jayjay for his work in initiating this plugin all those years ago!!  And to all Community Members who have used, provided feedback and gratitude, Thank You for Your Support!

(This thread remains here for historical reference until such time The Management deems otherwise)

What does this plugin do?
Adds “RetroAchievement” Badges to games that support RetroAchievements.
(See complete list of games here: https://retroachievements.org/gameList.php)

Why?
Because some people wanted it.

How to install the plugin:

  1. Download RetroAchBadge v2.x.x.zip
  2. UnBlock the zip file.
    1. Right click the file, select “Properties” and check the box that says ‘Unblock’ [or something along those lines]
    2. Click OK to close the Properties window
  3. Open the zip file
  4. Copy the folder “RetroAchBadge” into your “/LaunchBox/Plugins/” folder
  5. Start LaunchBox
  6. Select Tools
  7. Select RetroAchievements Badge Updater (Internet connection required)
  8. Click Start Update and Wait for the Updater to complete.  (This may take up to 1 minute.)

Screenshot_2.0.png.15d90f614b43cba91912830a3f804b24.png

How to see the badges:

  1. Start LaunchBox (not necessary if you just completed the Install - steps 1 through 9)
  2. Click BADGES
  3. Select Plugin Badges
  4. 'Check’ Enable Retroachievements

badges_2.0.png.cd87f3fd4f424a22618fc34e38eb1e03.png

How to add or remove the badge from a game:

  1. Right click the game and select "RetroAchievements Badge"

RightClick_2.0.png.61038e96b30130abf470a6b5b6759ac6.png

How to get updates for new games added to RetroAchievements:

  1. In LaunchBox, Select Tools
  2. Select RetroAchievements Badge Updater (Internet connection required)

If you added or removed RetroAchievement badges for specific games, those games will remain added or removed after running the Updater.  To reset the games that have been added/removed, delete the files Added.xml and Removed.xml located in the plugins folder and rerun the Updater.

A word about Platform names:
Some of the Platform names used by RetroAchievements are different than the default names used in LaunchBox.  When using the Badge Updater, it will ‘convert’ these to the default names.

Examples:  “Mega Drive” gets changed to "Sega Genesis".  “SNES” to "Super Nintendo Entertainment System".  "Game Boy" to "Nintendo Game Boy".

This plugin will not rename any of your existing Platforms.

When checking for badges, the plugin will check your Platforms Scrape As setting as well as the Platform name.

Example: If you named your Platform "Game Boy" and Scrape As is set to "Nintendo Game Boy", badges will show for that Platform.

Platform names that get changed:

     From                                   To
"Mega Drive"                 "Sega Genesis"
"SNES"                            "Super Nintendo Entertainment System"
"Game Boy"                   "Nintendo Game Boy"
"Game Boy Advance"   "Nintendo Game Boy Advance"
"Game Boy Color"         "Nintendo Game Boy Color"
"NES"                               "Nintendo Entertainment System"
"32X"                               "Sega 32X"
"Master System"           "Sega Master System"
"PlayStation"                  "Sony Playstation"
"Game Gear"                  "Sega Game Gear"
"Virtual Boy"                  "Nintendo Virtual Boy"
"MSX"                              "Microsoft MSX"
"SG-1000"                       "Sega SG-1000"
"Saturn"                          "Sega Saturn"
"Intellivision"                  "Mattel Intellivision"
"Vectrex"                         "GCE Vectrex"
"PC-8000_8800"             "NEC PC-8801"
"PC-9800"                       "NEC PC-9801"
"PC-FX"                            "NEC PC-FX"
"Dreamcast"                   "Sega Dreamcast"
"PlayStation Portable"  "Sony PSP"
"PC Engine"                    "NEC TurboGrafx-16"

Changing the default icon:
If you wish to use a different Badge icon, replace “\LaunchBox\Images\Badges\RABadge001.png” with your own image.

Known Issues:
Game titles are taken directly from RetroAchievements and may differ (slightly or a lot) from yours. So if you have a game that is known to have achievements and the badge isn’t showing, follow all steps under How to add or remove the badge from a game:.

Updating via the Tools menu may take up to 1 minute to complete.  Though not really an 'issue' perse, but it is a "thing".  So plan your updates around refilling your water glass, grabbing a soda or whatever takes you about 60 seconds to do.

Unknown issues:
Let me know when you find them.

@JoeViking245 Excellent idea making it update badges to Platforms from the 'Scrape As'... this has added hundreds of badges to my various platforms that had different names, saves me so much time. Thank you 🙏

Hi again @JoeViking245... Sorry to be a bother again but I have run across some additional bugs, perhaps I am alone in this... The 'Scrape as' on my 'Sony PSP' & 'NEC TurboGrafx-16' / 'TurboGrafx-CD' is not adding the badges by default as with other platforms, which is not a big problem in itself as I only have a few games on those platforms, unfortunately once I manually add a badge the next time I do a 'Update' on the Plugin it wipes away all manually added badges again... Also the 'Added.xml. will 'multi-register' the entries despite not showing the badges after the update ect...

Additionally I have some Japanese NES & SNES games listed under the custom platforms 'Nintendo Family Computer' & 'Super Famicom' respectively, which I was so happy to find had many, many badges added to supported games after your previous revision to the Plugin... There are some small outliers - likely due to minor naming discrepancies - and again not particularly an issue in itself, the problem is when manually adding a badge within these 'Custom Platforms' no badge will be displayed onscreen next to the game,,, despite registering on the 'Added.xml'... The same 'multi-register' issue comes up here also after subsequent attempts to manually update badge ect...

I did a clean install of the Plugin incase it was a problem my side but have had the problems reoccur. I've added some screencaps I hope can be of help, if I can provide any addition ones just let me know Thanks 🙏

@MD-Geist Thanks for letting me know!!

Sony PSP ("PlayStation Portable") was not on the list of 'Platform names to fix' (just like Sega Dreamcast wasn't).  It has now been added.

When updating, added Platforms ("Nintendo Family Computer" etc.) were not being added back into AllGames.xml from Added.xml.  Only games that fell under an existing Retro Achievements console/platform ("fixed" or not) were added.

This has been fixed which should in-turn fix doubling up game entries in Added.xml (since you won't have to add them again after updating ;)).

I still haven't done anything with TurboGrafx issue.  And there's a real strong chance I won't because of how R-Achievements has grouped console variants.  But this revision should fix the issue with manually added games for consoles not specifically on the list.

This zip ONLY contains one of the files for the plugin.  Download, UnBlock, and replace the file in your /Plugins/RetroAchBadge/ folder with the one in the zip. Keep all other files in the folder.  Run the Badge Updater from the Tools menu.

Since your Added.xml is small, either delete it and start over, or just delete the duplicated games from the xml and save.  You could even do nothing, but those duplicates will always be there.  It won't hurt anything.  Just looks ugly. :D

Heya @JoeViking245, I hope this day finds you well... I've had opportunity to install revision v2.1.1 and happy to say that Sony PSP is now registering most badges by default, thank you for that...I'm still having the issue though that once a badge has been manually added the next time the Plugin 'Updates' Badges it wipes away those that were added manually, despite still showing in the 'Added.xml' ... I have included a small video to illustrate.

In addition the custom NES / SNES platforms for Japanese games 'Nintendo Family Computer' and 'Super Famicom'  show many supported games now that weren't before, an excellent time saver, but the only problem is when trying to add a new badge manually it will not show up on Launchbox at all, despite registering in the 'Added.xml' ... I have tried this on another custom named platform i.e. 'Microsoft MSX2 - Translated' and there the badge will register and even remain post Plugin 'Update' ect ... I have also included a small video of this.

Thank you very much, I hope these help. 🙏

I'm pretty sure I fixed it "this time". 🤞

This was mainly an issue with Titles that had an ampersand in them.  ("Dragon Quest I & II")

Another issue I saw a couple times in the vids had to do with capitalization. (Jeanne d'Arc  vs.  Jeanne D'Arc)

These 2 issues should be fixed as well.  With these last 2 fixes, can you see how it looks without using the Added.xml file?  Before updating with this version, delete, move or rename Added.xml.  Run the updater, then see how your badge collection looks.

RetroachievementBadges (v2.1.2).zip  Second verse, same as the first. (download, unblock, unzip, replace the 1 file, run the updater...)

Let me know how it goes. 😎

@JoeViking245 I deleted the 'Added.xml' and replaced the required file, booted up Launchbox and ran the Updater. At first glace everything seems A-ok ... I went over to the games that I showed in the video examples, 'Sony PSP' first, the 'Jean d'Arc' registered fine with no need to make any manual additions, 'Kingdom Hearts - Birth by Sleep Final Mix' required a badge added manually, which I did, and ran the update again to see if the issue where it wipes them away reoccurs... I'm very happy to say the Retroachievement badge stuck this time 😎.

Onto the custom NES / SNES Platforms for Japanese games... the ones I showed in the example video - Dragon Ball on NES & Dragon Quest on SNES respectively - registered the badges by default, excellent,.. So I found others for the purpose of the 2nd issue. On the 'Nintendo Family Computer' I took ' Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun ' .... And on 'Super Famicom' I took ' Dragon Quest VI: Maboroshi no Daichi ' . Regrettably the issue where no visual indication shows for the badge on Launchbox still persists in this instance, similar as was shown in the 2nd video. I did go back over to the custom platform 'Microsoft MSX2 - Translated' and added a badge manually to 'SD Snatcher' again also, which displayed correctly, I ran an update on the Plugin again and the badge remained perfectly fine ... So it seems the custom NES / SNES Platforms are being troublesome for some reason specifically... I'll include Screen caps for these 2 platforms details incase you can perhaps spot the problem...

I also briefly tested 'NEC TurboGrafx-16' & 'NEC TurboGrafx-CD' and both registered manually added badges just fine and also kept them post Plugin update. Thank you again for your continued support in all this 🙏

To clarify, for Nintendo Family Computer and Super Famicon, most of the games having achievements show a badge.?.  The 2 games mentioned for these consoles don't show a badge.  Which makes sense because they are named differently from what R-Achievements names them.

But an issue remains (at least with these 2) that if you right-click and click to add a badge, it doesn't appear?  I see the games are getting added to the Added.xml.  Are they showing up in AllGames.xml?  (pro-tip: When viewing AllGames.xml in Notepad++, press ALT+2 to collapse it just the consoles.  Then you can click the + next to the console you actually want to see the games for.)  Actually, can you share your AllGames and Added xml files? (just drag & drop the file onto your reply)

I'm at least glad to hear most all of the other idiosyncrasies are getting ironed out. :)

Good morning @JoeViking245, I hope all is well.

As you have stated above, yes most of the 'Nintendo Family Computer' & 'Super Famicom' games currently show badges by default after the initial update on the Plugin, which is excellent 😎

The issue as you correctly mention is the addition of a manual badge which then will not appear next to the game, but are added to the 'Added.xml'... I did just check the 'AllGames.xml' to check if ' Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun '  for 'Nintendo Entertainment System' is listed... it is listed under the name ' <title>Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun | Kid Dracula</title> ' ... also for the 'Super Nintendo Entertainment System'  the game ' Dragon Quest VI: Maboroshi no Daichi ' is listed as ' <title>Dragon Quest VI</title> ' ... The names for these 2 games as listed in the 'Added.xml' does differ, there they are named ' <title>Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun</title> ' & ' <title>Dragon Quest VI: Maboroshi no Daichi</title> ' respectively.

I have included the 'AllGames.xml' & 'Added.xml' for you to check out...

The 'Added' has a few more games to it now, as I went Platform by Platform to see if the issue occurred anywhere else i.e. Manually added badges not showing ect ... I'm happy to say it seems isolated to the 'Nintendo Family Computer' & 'Super Famicom' as I did not see this issue anywhere else (I tested across about 20 Platforms with 1 game added per Platform where applicable), also I made sure after each new addition to run the Plugin 'Update' again to see that the badges would remain, and in all instances they did, with the strange exception of 1 in my 'Sega Master System' Platform, the game is ' Master of Darkness ' ... When I tried to add a badge it did show up, but as was the case with the 'Sony PSP' issue from Video 1 the badge disappeared again after the update, I did test 1 additional game in 'Sega Master System' to see if the problem reoccurred, here I manually added a badge to ' Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin ' , the badge registered and I ran the update again, and the badge remained for this game ...

Definitely exceptional progress overall to the Plugin, not least of which was making use of the 'Scrape as' to help locate games, as it has literally added 100s of the various Japanese games that required manual additions before. Thank you so much for the work you have put in, if I can provide any addition files / info please just say 🙏

Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun '  for 'Nintendo Entertainment System' is listed... it is listed under the name ' <title>Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun | Kid Dracula</title> '

Your 'shorter' title is also listed (in AllGames) under Nintendo Family Computer which is the console name it will look for first.  If it doesn't find the games' Title there, it will then look under the scrape-as console name.  (just an FYI)

Between then and now, I was doing some code cleanup and don't think I really changed anything when I had a thought.   (ya, crazy. I know!)  I created a new Platform called Nintendo Family Computer (a novel idea) and added Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun / Kid Dracula to it.  And the badge appeared.  I then renamed it to Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun and there was (as expected) no badge.  Right clicked, added the badge, and it showed.  Ran the updater, the badge was still there.  Same thing with DQ6.

So either I did change/fix something, or "you got issues". ;)   Try this.  RetroachievementBadges (v2.1.3).zip

If it's still not working, edit the game(s) and check the Title.  Maybe there's a leading or trailing space, or one of the characters is an atypical ascii character (even though it may look OK)...  Actually, better yet, if to the right of the Title there's a LB DB ID#, click the red X and then Search for metadata and select the game that appears. Click OK. If no LBDB ID#, Search for metadata, select game and click OK.

BTW (at least on mine), no Retro Achievements show in LB for the game Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun.  Also, I did end up playing it for about 15 minutes to "see what it's all about".  It kind of fits in line with my style of old-school Nintendo games. :D

Heya @JoeViking245, thank you for the swift reply, I shall try the new revision and play around with the naming conventions as you have described above and get back to you with my findings.

Lol I'm so glad you tried and enjoyed the ' Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun ' ... It's actually a strange little spin-off game within the 'Castlevania' series, I played it as a child but it was in Japanese 😜... It always stuck with me though, very cool game. Thx again, I shall update you asap 🙏

@JoeViking245 I've deleted the old 'Added.xml' and replaced the required file, booted up Launchbox and ran the 'RetroAchievements Badge Updater 2.1.3' ...

I'm happy to say that ' Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun ' and ' Dragon Quest VI: Maboroshi no Daichi ' both had RetroAchievement Badges at default without the need to add manually (initially at least, things got a bit weird later as I shall explain), so to check the issue I have now used the games ' Kekkyoku Nankyoku Daibouken ' for 'Nintendo Family Computer' & ' DoReMi Fantasy: Milon no DokiDoki Daibouken ' for the 'Super Famicom' respectively ... I am so, so happy to say that both games displayed the badges correctly after manually adding them and in addition remained there after another 'Update' on the Plugin ...

This is where things get a little strange, as mentioned above the games' Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun ' and ' Dragon Quest VI: Maboroshi no Daichi ' had badges listed at default, but once I manually added badges to the 2 other games (' Kekkyoku Nankyoku Daibouken ' & ' DoReMi Fantasy: Milon no DokiDoki Daibouken ') for the purpose of further testing then the badges on ' Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun  ' and ' Dragon Quest VI: Maboroshi no Daichi ' disappeared again ... I was able to manually add them again afterwards and ran the 'Updater' on the Plugin and they stayed then... Strange little error but I figured I should mention it...

Fundamentally though the issue seems resolved as on these custom platforms 'Nintendo Family Computer' & 'Super Famicom' now badges are able to be added manually, correctly display and stay post 'Update' on the Plugin. So that is fantastic 😎.

I did just want to mention again under 'Sega Master System' I ran across another small issue as stated in the previous post...

There is a game called ' Master of Darkness ' that showed no badge at default but is supported, I added a badge manually - which did display correctly - and ran the updater, the badge disappeared (Similar to the issue the Sony PSP video showed) ... I tried another game, in this case '  Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin ' which also showed no badge despite being supported. I added a badge manually - which also displayed correctly - and ran the updater... In this instance the badge remained post update as it should. This is a somewhat small issue but I figured I should mention it again, incase a 'fix' here might 'fix' other games with the same issue ect. If required I can make a small video again to illustrate, just let me know 🙏

I played around abit with naming conventions as you suggested... I just went straight for a game I knew had badges but did not list it in anyway on Launchbox, so under 'Arcade' I chose ' Aero Fighters 2 | Sonic Wings 2 ' ... I went to the RetroAchievements site and just copy / pasted the name from there into the name for the game in Launchbox, I did not delete / reset the Launchbox DB ID but kept it as it was. I'm happy to say the game box displayed the badge next to it immediatly as well as the 'details' section now correctly showing the badge support. I took some Screen caps to illustrate, very simple. Only drawback is I lost my 'clear logo' but as soon as I did a 'Tools - Download - Update Metadata & Media for selected games' I got it back no probs. I will try this with a few other games (I want to try on 'Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun' ) and let you know how it goes.

Sorry if this post is very long-winded, thank you again so much for the time and effort you have spent troubleshooting and fixing all this 🙏

I quickly tested out the naming conventions on ' Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun ' and changed it to the name as listed on the RetroAchievements site, exactly the same as 'Aerofighters 2 / Sonic Wings 2' ... Not changing the Launchbox DB ID but only the name ect... Similarly the game in 'Details' section now displays the supported Badges ect...

That's odd that it removed the other 2 added games when adding these 2.  And more confusing when you added the other 2 back in, these 2 stayed.   I'm calling it a Win! 😁

Oops.  fixed.  This may fix some other little oddities as well.

RetroachievementBadges (v2.1.4).zip

Nice discovery on the Aero Fighters 2 and seeing the achievements in LB!  Since (it looks like) it wants the Neo-Geo AES port to be able to gain achievements, you may need to add "aes" to the command line for that game.  i.e.  "mame.exe aes sonicwi2".

@JoeViking245 Good evening, hope you've had a good day 😊

I agree with you completely on the example of the games that 'removed badges themselves' after the other 2 games that had badges added manually ect ect... Most important here is just the ability to manually add a badge to a game and have it remain, once that was done it stuck just fine, thank you for that.

I deleted the 'Added.xml' and replaced the required file, booted up Launchbox and ran the initial 'Update' ... quick heads up it was still listed as 'RetroAchievements Badge Updater 2.1.3' and not 2.1.4 ...

I headed straight over to my 'Sega Master System' and the game ' Master of Darkness ' and manually added a badge, which displayed correctly, then ran the 'Updater' again... I'm happy to say that the Badge stuck this time, fantastic work 😎

I did quickly test out ' Aero Fighters 2 | Sonic Wings 2 (AES) ' and it still runs just fine under MAME. The way I have my 'Arcade' emulation setup is 'default emulator' = MAME, since that gives access to 'High Scores' on games that support them and MAME also has the best general support for games ect... Then as soon as I see a new 'Arcade' game gets 'RetroAchievements' I will add it again under the same entry as an 'Additional App' and make a small note next to the application name it has (Achievements Supported) ... Then as emulator choose 'RetroArch' but I have it setup to use 'Final Burn Neo' as it's core for 'Arcade' ect... so anyway if I wanna play MAME version with highscores double-click game, if I wanna play RetroArch with Achievements right-click and highlight 'Play Version' then just click on ' Game (Achievements Supported) ' ect...

Lol, anyway everything seems to be working better than ever with the Plugin, apart from the version listing 2.1.3 still... I'll play around with it a bit more this evening and tomorrow and if anything comes up let you know directly, but I think you've nailed it now. Thank you so much for all the time & effort you've put into this, it's greatly appreciated 🙏🙏

Because Retro Achievements combined PC-Engine, TurboGrafx-16 and TurboGrafx-CD games all into one category/console/platform.  There are 86 games listed in that 'console' (PC-Engine) spread amongst those 3 listed.  Some of those 86 also happen to fit into 2 different ones.  i.e. "Alien Crush" achievements are in both TG-16 and PCE.

I haven't decided on whether to change "PC Engine" to "NEC TurboGrafx-16", "NEC TurboGrafx-CD" or "PC Engine SuperGrafx".  Though I think "NEC TurboGrafx-16" may be the logical choice.

For now, you can edit AllGames.xml and rename "PC Engine" (approx. line #2307) to "NEC TurboGrafx-16" and save it.  And as long as Scrape As is set to "NEC TurboGrafx-16" for your given Platform, the badges will appear.

This Special Edition version adds a change to renaming "PC Engine" to "NEC TurboGrafx-16" when updating.

If you have a Platform for NEC TurboGrafx-16, NEC TurboGrafx-CD or PC Engine SuperGrafx (or any variant of these 3), after you have all your metadata and media for that Platform, set that Platform to Scrape As "NEC TurboGrafx-16".  This will ensure the Retro Achievement badges appear in your Platform.

Hi Joe, thanks for the plugin and the recent updates to keep it working.

I just updated to the new version of the plugin - I'd manually added the RA badge to all the games that didn't get caught by the auto-match, or needed them re-adding after tweaking the item name to my preferences. All those custom adds are now gone, presumably due to the switch from directories/files to the new singular Added.xml file.

Any advice for converting all those over to the new format? No worries if not, I'm sure I can figure out some batch file / text manipulation stuff!

EDIT: Never mind, managed to get it figured out pretty easily. Get a list of titles, sanitize the & symbol, add them to Added.xml and rerun the updater :)
