Game Cart Generator - Game Art Compositing Tool

Created by Saieno - @Lets_All_Game on Twitch and LetsAllGame on YouTube

Overview

Game Cart Generator is a standalone desktop application for generating stylized cartridge or disc-based artwork. It's primarily for user-supplied template layers, clear logos or box art, and optionally background images or procedural backgrounds to compose polished output images.

The app supports both standard label and defined logo area templates for advanced layouts, with options for pattern overlays, gradient fills, padding, scaling, compositing, and live color selection.

This app is designed for batch generation and includes a threaded progress bar, preview support, auto-saving of settings per template, and example templates which you can use if you'd like.

Template Requirements

Cartridge Template (PNG):

  • A top-layer graphic to overlay the final composition.
  • Should contain transparency for visible underlying layers.

Alpha Template (PNG):

  • Must contain the color #00FF18 to define the artwork or logo area for the label.
  • May contain the color #FF00FF to define a specific logo area which enables "Defined Logo Mode".
  • These colors are used as masking keys and will be auto-detected and replaced during rendering.

Key Features

  • Support for both Standard and Defined Logo Area modes.
  • Auto-detects and enables Defined Logo Mode based on Alpha Template contents.
  • Background generation with:
    • Solid color fill
    • Vertical gradient
    • Gradient with pattern overlay
  • Optional greyscale conversion for logos and/or background layers.
  • Background fallback logic when no matching background is found.
  • Pattern overlays with optional grayscale masking.
  • "BG Burn" effect for high-contrast multiply effect backgrounds.
  • "Logo Burn" for blending greyscale logo and background together as a single burn layer.
  • Fill Color: fills transparent areas inside the defined logo mask with a selectable color.
  • Color Picker: choose fill color directly from anywhere on screen.
  • Logo Stretch to Fill: stretches logos to fill the defined area, ignoring aspect ratio.
  • Manual Image Stretching (up, down, left, right), with Advanced Mode extended range option.
  • Scaled preview window with real-time updates and optional fit-to-window toggle.
  • Threaded batch generation with estimated time remaining.
  • Per-template configuration saved to settings.conf.
  • Recursive input directory support for all asset folders.

Defined Logo Mode Behavior

When a template contains #FF00FF (magenta), the tool enables Defined Logo Mode:

  • Clear logos are used in place of full box art.
  • Backgrounds are matched by filename (e.g., Sonic.png).
  • If no match is found:
    • If "Generate Background if Missing" is disabled, a random background from the folder is used.
    • If "Generate Background if Missing" is enabled, a generated gradient/pattern background is used automatically—even if background generation is off—to prevent transparency gaps.
  • Greyscale Background option converts matched backgrounds to black & white.
  • BG Burn applies a high-contrast multiply effect to background generation.
  • Logo Burn composites the greyscale logo and background together, then blends that composite with the stylized background.
  • If Fill Color is defined, it replaces any transparent pixels inside the logo mask area with the selected solid color.
  • Logo Stretch to Fill forces the logo to completely fill the masked region, ignoring original aspect ratio.

Output

  • Final images are saved as .png to the selected output folder.
  • Filenames are based on input image names for easy frontend installation.
  • Composite includes background + logo/art + cartridge template overlay.

Requirements

  • No installation or required.
  • Windows 10/11 Operating System

This is a great app and very useful.

Thanks for the share 👍

The holy grail to go along side this for me would be an app than can create logos from text in bulk , particularly for rom hacks and other obscure collection where there are no logos.

There are plenty online that can do it one by one (cool text for example), but I have never seen one that can do it in bulk.

Is that even possible ?

Thanks again

Would be fairly easy for an app to make a logo via WPF like we do and then save out the result. But best this would do is make them in a specific font and not quite like a real logo may look.

As C-Beats said, it is possible but its not really going to look like what you're hoping, and its outside of the scope of this particular application. I do have a fairly large update coming to the app however, with new features, templates, and options, so look for this soon (hopefully this weekend). As a sneak peek here's a few carts that were generated using the new app coming next update.

Cool program and huge props for creating it. However you probably should of asked the original uploaders if you may use their carts/discs etc. A lot of people spent a lot of time creating and/or touching up templates and getting them just perfect. For you to take them put them into a collection and say "look what I did" is kind of wrong in my opinion. And not to mention that unfortunately the touch ups to remove watermarks and or attempt to duplicate the quality of the originals have fallen short on serval of these (whether that be the stickers edges, shading, etc.). At worst case a credit and link to each user who shared/uploaded the original cart file would be a nice start.

Heya ABeezy! First off, thanks for your collections and contributions to cart fronts and boxes, they are all fantastic quality and some of the best out there.

Perhaps there's some confusion on the purpose of this particular application and how it works, however I originally never intended to provide templates, and instead the intention was for people to provide their own so they can have the carts look however they like. I included some random templates I already had in different resolutions and qualities as examples for people to test with. Whether you think removing a watermark for my personal use is in poor taste or not is up to you. However, based on your comments you seem to be confused as to how this actually works and why the templates are edited as they are. This isn't a collection of anything, this is literally a image compositing tool and the templates are edited to best work with the application.

I am working on a newer version of the app and will be including more templates, which of course the original concepts of will be fully credited if applicable. Thanks!

Yep, dev already said they would add credit too so everyone should be happy. I love how this generator gives you the option to do pretty much anything with any cart or disc you find to your preference. The glorious extra carts and discs are just a bonus that also shows you how to get the program working, everything's basically possible with it I think. Purple gameboy color carts for my collection just because I can!

You are so wrong. Probably the reason you're not in several of the private discord's anymore. Piss poor attitude and turned to many people off. But using someone else's file they took many many many hours to create and perfect without even asking is not really proper etiquette. Then to include said file in whatever said person is making and then passing it off as theirs isn't cool.

I mentioned I like this program, its impressive. But INCLUDING these images WITH the program as if he made them without asking or saying all credit goes to A, B, and C then that's not right. Think of it in terms of photography. The same thing applies... If I take someone's professional photo and I create a photo album of different photos (for whatever reason) and then I distribute said album online for others without mentioning its not my original images/pictures that I took then the same thing would apply. Like anything online  - for personal use is one thing. Creating and redistributing is another.

With that being said I appreciate the mention of credit if it in fact is given and mentioned in the forum/program, whatever. For example I know that Game Boy Color clear cart came from one of my sets amongst a handful of others (Game Boy Advance, etc). They all took me believe it or not a lot of time and effort to perfect. For example between colors, layers, the battery, its all custom made with photoshop to get just right. So yeah I take pride in my work.

Don't' know where you get your fact's I have never been in several discord groups with you.. I know of one which I personally left. I personally have not one single instance of your work on my setup and do not care...But let me help you and jump up and say I need my credit...

Cool program!  Always nice to have some options.  I personally already have pretty much all the carts I need, and if I need to add any I just use photoshop with a template.  But seems like it is really helping some people out.

I could honestly care less if you use any of my work or not. I won't lose any sleep over it. I share it for those who want to use it and enjoy it. But you obviously don't understand my previous post and how the internet works in regards to digital elements and what is considered the correct thing to do. I have nothing else to say to you, waste of my time. Have a good day.

Heya @Raindupon! Thanks for checking it out! The application is actually mainly for people to be able to use whatever template they want and not necessarily the ones included in the zip. These were mainly included to show how each template can look or how it looks when designed for the app, and should allow anyone to create their own easily or use whatever they like. If you'd like to create a 'template pack' for the application, feel free and that would be awesome to see! But I don't know if I'll add additional templates with this unless its something people really want.

Oh wow this program is great! Wish I had this years ago when cart art was not uniform and harder to come by. This is perfect for prototypes, unlicensed games or games that were never released on physical media. Very handy tool!

I don't think the author was taking anyones work and passing it off as their own. I do see why ABreezy is protective and defensive over his content. I create content too, and it is time consuming, but I will be honest the HUGE bulk of the work comes from collecting the best source images possible. For Example, the Sega Genesis cart template you credited me for probably took me less than an hour to create (and it shows, its not that great lol). It was collecting the source images for EACH game that was back breaking work. And for me personally I don't need any credit if someone uses a template I created. I prefer they create any missing media on their own than asking me personally to create it. Anyway it doesnt matter, in less than five years AI will be creating 1000s of images for these old systems in minutes. And that AI will not credit no one lol.

Can you use your own templates and if so how? How do you make the alpha template transparent ?

Heya Zugswang! I explained this in the video but if you look in the Template directory, you'll see all of the example templates you can build upon or use. You should be able to use them for reference, but essentially you take your transparent template, make a copy, then where you want the background to be color it #00FF18 (green) and where you want the Logo to be (if you want a logo defined template) use #FF00FF (magenta). There's an issue with uploading images currently otherwise I'd send exactly what I'm referring to but if you look in the template directories there's already an Xbox folder there you can reference for your own templates.

Thanks for info.

I was just seeing if I could get this app to do framed logos as although I already have something that can do it, it's restricted to 400x175 dimensions.

It can, thats how the Famicom Cart works, with the fill color. Check the FC -> LogoTemplate, and you'll see that the logo is in the grey label area. Then I use the fill color, click the grey so it fills the background with the same color, etc.

Heya @zugswang! I promise you can make your own templates as needed. For example, here's a quick PS4 one I made.

Heya @DrNilsson86! This won't generate logos or titles for you, however you can use the same template method for anything really. Here's a box front example:
