  1. I"m approaching 90 thousand games. Takes up more than 6 terabytes. (Fit everything but exodos and win3xo on there though). Bear in mind a HUGE portion of those games are for old computers, clones, and just bad games. I'll never import them all into launchbox.

Wanted to add I keep games that you can't even emulate, as in n-gage etc. There's the, I think, 32 thousand or so I have in launchbox, and I'm pretty much done except to add new games as I get them in steam.

Everything emulate-able, though, I do have launching through rocketlauncher.

  2. Not all of the games work even in a perfect set. Some games will not work if you're using a different version of mame than the version of roms. In terms of finding replacements, this is not advisable. Some games may store information in multiple zips, so you might break working games if you tamper with the set. The best way to ensure you have the best available compatibility is to use the most recent mame set with the most recent version of the emulator.

To add individual roms to launchbox, you can use the rom importer option, or simply drag the rom into launchbox which will launch the importer, ask the system, download art etc.

  3. You're not going to like the answer to this. It's windows that's messing this up. It assigns priority on a first come first serve basis in terms of what you plug in. You were right to try joy2key, because unlike controllers the keyboard will stay plugged in and should keep the bindings. However, I think joy2key will still assign controllers based on how windows prioritizes them so ultimately even this won't work. As far as I know, and I'm not an expert here, but I do use controllers at all times, the only solutions (both tentative, neither ideal) is to never unplug any controller ever, OR bind all your emulators to the SAME keys for the same things. So for every emulator the W key might be up for instance, then use joy2key or xpadder to make profiles for all your controllers that are as similar as possible. Meaning no matter what controller you plug in, and or emulator you're using, it doens't matter because the keys are the same. Of course, considering the variety of systems and native controllers this is actually more difficult than you might think. You'll also have to get this working in MAME. I'm not sure why it wouldn't be. Are you using the latest version?

  4. Depends on the theme, but for most that's pretty much all you have to do. The creators will usually give instructions, like installing a few fonts, and you may have to tell windows not to freak out over the dlls. That's it. I installed like 8 themes in 30 minutes a couple weeks ago. Zero to hero. My personal favorite is the switch theme.

  5. Yeah there's no right or wrong here. The only real reason to keep those in the Launchbox folder is if you want to make it completely portable, as in you could put the entire thing on a flash or external and move it between computers. Other than that, if you intend to continue adding games and systems you might want to invest in a hd for just roms because they fill up fast. :D

  6. You can probably do this with AHK script, you can do it with Rocketlauncher, and for xpadder, not sure about vjoy, you can leave it on a blank profile and set it to autoload a specific profile depending on what window is in focus. You can use RetroArch which supports controllers natively very well. Lastly, I'm pretty sure epsxe supports controllers as well. Why the need for vjoy?

  7. Retroarch is versatile but as a result, you can save per core configs, per game configs etc. They will be saved in the config folder and you can view them there. Beyond that, all changes are made to the main retroarch config.

  8. Click save on exit, and never the other two. Whatever you set up will save when you exit retroarch properly and there will be no way to mix up the configs. All your changes will be saved to the main retroarch.cfg.

  9. Do note that if you imported them as zips, and then you extract, launchbox will still look for the zip. Recommend extracting all of them, deleting all the games from launchbox and then reimporting them. To my knowledge mame roms and Amiga roms are the only ones that should be zipped. I personally wouldn't bother with the lb extract feature unless space is an issue.

  10. If you want to use the same controller config for all cores, it's easiest to make sure that you're launching the standard retroarch config. If I had to guess, I'd say somehow you're launching a different config when you launch nes. Did you save any other configs. If the menu won't come up with the keyboard , like DOS said, it usually means the menu button is bound to a controller.

  11. Also note, some emulators may require a bios file to be extracted, some, like mame, want the file to be zipped. Again, you just have to go to the emulator page and Google and read up.

  12. It may be worth noting that MAME is a strange one. If you're going to use Mame you're going to want to download a good mame rom set. The reason is, a mame rom set actually comes with a bunch of bios files mame needs. So to address your question directly, yes, depending on where you get things, they may be named weird and emulators may require you to rename. Also, not all bios files will work with every emulator, some are picky. I wouldn't personally bother trying to use the no intro bios for any system. I'd just good "emulator name / bios".

  13. Your order of operations should always be to get the system, games and emulator, working outside of launchbox before you import. This makes it easier to ask for help as it can help isolate any problems you're having.

  14. Many emulators do not require a bios file. No Intro includes them for thoroughness only. In order to find out if an emulator requires this file, it's best to visit the emulator page. Again, most do not. Nor should they ever be imported to launchbox.
