  1. Almost wishing I never tried the runahead method It has spoiled me to the extent that lag has become noticeable enough to ruin the experience, whereas in the past I never noticed it. I can understand why the MiSTer project and FPGA consoles are becoming so popular, and I can see where the 'original-hardware-on-CRT' purists are coming from. Still, I am a firm believer in the superiority of emulation. So it seems that in order to get the most playable arcade experiences via emulation, I should split my arcade collection between FBA and MAME2003+ cores. Gonna take some painstaking sorting, but it'll be worth it.
  2. Thanks for the advice. I'll give the MAME2003 core a try, but will also experiment with GroovyMAME. Still not sure whether to work with the RA core or the standalone. I'm using an HD LED TV set to game mode. I understand that CRT is the superior option for lag reduction, but alas, I don't have a means of connecting my PC to the component inputs of my Sony Trinitron. I do have a PC CRT which I could try. However, after experimenting with the runahead feature on other RA cores, I find that the lag has been reduced to levels which are barely perceptible, even on my HD LED TV. I don't know much about G-Sync / Freesync, but I'll look into it.
  3. I'm very impressed with RetroArch's lag-reducing run-ahead system. However, I'm very disappointed that it doesn't work with the MAME core (due to lack of save-states). The FinalBurn Alpha core in RA is great because of the runahead feature, but it would be fantastic if the MAME core could also utilise this amazing feature (especially as MAME supports more games than FBA). I am currently using the standalone version of MAME (0.198), but the lag is noticeable. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to reduce it? Thanks
  4. I've been experimenting with latency-reduction via RetroArch's runahead method and am very pleased with the results. Whilst a truly lag-free experience can only be achieved with original hardware and CRT displays, RetroArch produces results that are, in my opinion, good enough. However, this technique often comes with a serious performance cost. I have been experimenting with various RA cores to see which are better suited to latency-reduction on more modest specs. Surprisingly, Genesis Plus GX has no noticeable performance loss, whereas BSNES-balanced suffers audio and framerate stutters as does Nestopia. After switching out to less accurate cores, (SNES 9X and FCEUX) I have seen a performance boost in conjunction with significant lag-reduction. Unfortunately, I am not having any luck with Gameboy Advance, as the audio and framerate suffer from similar stuttering. My default emulator is MGBA and even the VBA core did not produce satisfactory results. I would like to compile a list of cores that support the runahead method (I believe the MAME cores do not) as well as which cores are good substitutes. Does anyone have any RA core/setting suggestions that they've found useful as it relates to latency-reduction? (I am only referring to emulator settings, not TV/display settings.)
  5. DAMMIT! I was gonna settle for the MAME2014 RetroArch core due to its compatibility with my romset (v0.158) (in spite of the core having annoying quirks.) Now, thanks to this tutorial, I have no excuse not to update. Arcade emulation has been chewing up hours / months / years of my time and just as I thought I'd had it licked, now I realize I have to do even more work if I want to benefit from the RA MAME core updates. Thanks for the tutorial
  6. Never mind. Refreshed all images and it now displays correctly.
  7. I'm getting the same issue with the NEC TurboGrafx-CD / PC Engine CD clear logo. All other platform logos display correctly in Big Box. I tried re-saving the logo and inserted it via Tools-Manage Platforms.
