DOS76
I've been spending the last few days messing around with Sega CD games after I realized I was missing quite a few titles from my collection after adding them I've been testing a few of them and I've noticed that all of the live action games look terrible through emulation now I have never experienced any of these games on the Sega CD itself but I can't imagine that they sold anything that looked that bad on your TV. Does anyone know of any plugins or filters that help improve the quality of the picture. If so let me know I most likely won't be playing any as I've read that most of them are terrible (but I rarely trust other peoples opinions) but I would like them to look better just in case. SentaiBrad
It did look as bad as you might be imagining. It got better near the end of the CD's life cycle but FMV video was heavily compressed. I loaded it up in RA, and tried a few different shaders. My go to is usually Pixellate, but what do you know, it pixelated the video more heavily. There honestly isn't too much you can do about it. They were super compressed video with an extremely low resolution. The best filter I can suggest is a normal x3-x5 filter. No xBR, no Bilinear, just straight upscaling. Even then it still wont look good.
Jason Carr
Yeah, it makes sense because they were trying to do FMV through a medium that really wasn't big enough for it (CDs). That, and they had to do it with Genesis hardware. Pretty crazy; it's a wonder they were able to do it at all.
CriticalCid
There are 6 games that have a 32X version which look slightly better through the additional power of the 32X. But don’t get your expectations too high, it looks still very crappy with today’s standards. Here’s an article that features these games: http://www.poprewind.com/6-sega-cd-32x-games-is-all-they-made/
DOS76
Yeah I have 5 out of the 6 CD 32X roms Surgical Strike is supposedly extremely rare to the point that people thought it was a myth for awhile I don't know if it has ever been dumped but I can't find a copy of it. It was only sold in Brazil.
Jason Carr
Ha, very interesting. So those were the "better" ones. I've never even seen any FMV games that *didn't* require the 32X then.
DOS76
I was looking at Mad Dog McCree yesterday which is only a Sega CD game and boy does it look atrocious (appearance not the game I couldn't stick with it long enough to make any judgement on the game itself). SentaiBrad
There are two versions of Night Trap, Sega CD and Sega CD 32x. I couldn't even get the 32X version to load up, I might be missing 32x BIOS or I might need to append the game with special boot parameters but yea, there are regular Sega CD versions. the CD still processes parts of the game, including audio and the 32x helps process some graphical instructions. DOS76
Corpse Killer Night Trap Supreme Warrior Slam City with Scottie Pippen These 4 games have both Sega CD and Sega CD 32X roms the 5th game Fahrenheit I can only find a CD 32X version for so if there is a regular CD version I've never seen it the 6th game is a unicorn. In Kega Fusion you need both the Sega CD Bios and the 32X Bios I figure you are using RA so I don't have a clue what you need to make that happen
