Hey everyone I'm new to emulators and I've been trying to set up retroarch as the main emulator for launchbox (snes, mega drive and neo geo so far), however no matter what I do I can't get it to launch retroarch using a neo geo game. The whole process works fine for super nintendo using the snes9x core. I have a feeling it has something to do with it not being on the associated platforms list in emulator settings. I manually added it using the dll for the neo geo core provided by retroarch (fb_alpha_neo_libretro.dll) here is a screen shot http://i.imgur.com/thwaZFL.png http://i.imgur.com/daGEFHg.png and here the full command -L"cores\fb_alpha_neo_libretro.dll" -c "config\fb_alpha_neo_libretro.cfg". The games work fine when i use retroarch to load them through its file opener, but no matter what I try retroarch won't pop when I click on a neo geo rom in launchbox. If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate the help. Cheers.

SentaiBrad said Do you have a custom config to be loading? If not it's trying to load nothing and that will break it, and does it require BIOS? Are they in your system folder in your RA folder?
Well the config file i created in retroarch for a controller config i made. But I've tried it with out that command too only the dll part (-L"cores\fb_alpha_neo_libretro.dll") and it's still the same. As for the bios not too sure tbh as I said the games run fine through retroarch but launchbox just wont open it.

SentaiBrad said Then does the name of the system under Associated Platform match the name in the left pane of LaunchBox? Both names need to match.
Yeah I've tried both ways of doing neogeo/neo geo. Even edited single games and made sure the emulator was set right etc. I'm pretty gutted it's not working :(. Superni ntendo works fine using the same methods, the only single difference about them is that snex9 is listed automatically in the associated platforms list and somehown I think I'm not adding that neo geo platform correctly.

Just a guess but double check the end of the Neo Geo parameter text field that you don't completely see in your screenshot. If you copy-pasted from another row, you could have extra stuff at the end...

Just an update, tried a few things but nothing seems to work getting retroarch to load as an emulator for neogeo. So i tried winkawaks and now the emulator actually loads up when clicking on a game ..but with the message no game loaded lol. Can anyone tell me how they got their neogeo emulator working, unless I'm missing something I've tried the only 2 viable emulators. Thanks for any advice you can give.

scree said Hi Mike10101 I don't use Retroarch so I'm no use to you there. However, Winkawaks can auto load and open games - see attached images on how to set it up. Your paths will be different.
Thanks mate I think I've seen these settings in another similar post maybe by you, I tried a few different things to get it going including identical to what your screen shots show but no go. On a whim I tried one last time to get retroarch working for neo geo and suddenly ..it started working randomly lol. Dunno wth is going on but I'm happy for now so I'm gonna continue on adding systems see how things go. Thanks to everyone who took the time to give suggestions I'm sure I'll be back when I break more things.

I never used the individual cores for arcade games, always just used MAME or Standalone MAME and it's worked well enough for me when I wanted it to. RetroArch can get tricky, If you need more help with it and LB there are tutorials that Jason and myself have made in our YouTube channel. The link is in my signature.

Ah thanks mate yeah I watched the vids about retroarch they were very helpful . My big problem now is I've set up FB Alpha core as the arcade emulator but it doesn't start half of the roms I added from an old mame collection, I heard that you're meant to have a matching set of roms collections or something for fb alpha so im getting those atm and hoping that they work better -.-. The struggle continues lol. Really impressed with launchbox though, for ages I was thinking I'd love to have a front end and make a cool collection of great games from different systems.

SentaiBrad said IS FB Alpha an Arcade emulator or a specific set of arcade machine emulators? I've always just used MAME for everything Arcade related. Standalone works, the RetroArch cores work (the 2014 one has been working for me).
I think it covers most of what mame does from what I've read. I also downloaded the mame core and set up retoarch as the emulator in launchbox for it but strangely it will only open the exact same roms as fb alpha does, so I don't know if the emulator setting I made are conflicting between mame and fb alpha somehow -.-. So I'm gonna try a new updated arcade rom set since my rom set was old and from random dates and I think I read that causes compatibility problems with newer versions of emulators or something, even if those roms worked on the same emulator previously. have I got any of this right lol? I think I'm in over my head tbh.

Hm can't seem to edit my posts anymore. Guys if I installed mame the actual emulator and not the one from retroarch, what version of mame would you suggest. On their main site the download is a binary file so should I be going for this or a version of mame that has a UI since I want to try and set it to use a 360 game pad. Any advice on what mame version I should use is appreciated.
