Hoakypoaky
what's the advantage of a split set again? It's split into parents & clones, so does that mean I will have like 10 versions of pacman in LB? Or does that depend on how they are imported into LB? The big nonmerged set is def out then. Lordmonkus
You should either use the non merged or split, avoid the merged since that messes with Launchbox's importer. The advantage of the split set is like I said, it's really easy to pick out a specific version of a games "clone" rom. For example I can easily have both the 4 player and 2 player versions of games like Gauntlet or TMNT in my Launchbox setup at the same time. I can import both the 4 player and 2 player roms and just name them slightly different in LB to distinguish between the 2. Now the non merged set may allow for this level of customization but I cannot say it does or does not allow it for certain because I have only ever used the split set. DOS76
merged will have puckman 1 rom inside of that will be every clone version split will have the parent rom puckman along with a separate archive for every clone but it will only contain the necessary files of the clone the rest will be used from the parent non merge will have the same thing as the split except that every clone will also contain all the files from the parent that it needs to work. Hoakypoaky
My bad I meant merged is out. So it sounds like non-merged has everything you need contained in each game zip, but it's redundant saving all those dupe parent files & takes up a lot of space, and if you wanted to update you would need to download the complete set. But split takes less space since the parent files aren't duplicated, and the clones can be easily updated. Hmmm. Does LB operate better with non-merged vs split? Hoakypoaky
Thanks guys, I missed your last reply. I'll go with the split set & see how it goes
DOS76
I don't think LB will behave in any different manner depending upon which set you get.
Hoakypoaky
Quick question... I was able to download the split MAME 0.188 Roms, but when I looked for the 0.188 CHDs, the only ones I could find were merged. is that right? There's no split set for CHDs?
DOS76
no the chd's only come merged or at least that is the only format I've seen them come in.
Hoakypoaky
Is there any other MAME set I need to download? I have the split roms & merged chds, but I see other bundles for 0.188 like... MAME video snaps 16gb MAME extras 39gb MAME rollback ROMs 8gb MAME ROMs Bios Devices 108mb MAME File manager MFM Data sets 1gb MAME Software Lists Machine bios devices 18mb MAME software lists roms split 55gb what are these sets, and do in need them?? No idea of their purpose.
DOS76
1 video snaps are short videos of the game 2 Extras are all different type of artwork and sample dat files stuff that can be used in MAME if you are using the built in UI or bezels if you already have artwork for MAME in LB then some of it is kinda redundant. 3 Rollback roms I believe are for rolling your set back to the previous version for whatever reason you may want to do so. I've never used them myself. 4 If you have a full set you have these already. 5 They are dat files I don't really have a great understanding on what to do with them 6 These are something you would want to have if you had a stand alone version of MESS but weren't using MAME all the files in here are also included in MAME 7 These are ROMs for all the consoles that MAME supports to some various degree these is what the MESS side of MAME uses for ROMs, They are named with MAME conventions and LB doesn't recognize the naming for them. Hoakypoaky
So it sounds like I don't need any of it. I would like the bezels, but I'm sure I can find them elsewhere. Looks like I can import these into LB tomorrow & try to get my mame setup configured. Still debating going with mame standalone emulator or retroarch. I suppose it's not that big a deal. DOS76
Yeah the extras have the bezels but I think you can get them elsewhere what I do suggest you find it a samples pack which are also in the extras there are games that while not needing them to play they enhance the games with sound effects and such. in the root MAME folder there should be a samples folder you just put them in there and everything will work you can get the extra pack and only choose to download the bezels and the samples depending on how your torrent client is setup
Hoakypoaky
This is getting frustrating when the YouTube tutorials are different from what I'm seeing on my screen. im about to import my mame 0.188 split ROMs & CHDs. As I stepped through the import settings, there was never a screen that allowed you to check the boxes to skip mahjong, casino, quiz etc etc games. I don't want to import all that crap. Im on the final ready to import screen, and scrolling through the list (which is enormous), I can see these mahjong games etc & duplicate versions of some games listed. If I import all this, does that mean I'll have to go through them one by one and delete? What happened to the screen where you could choose to skip all the junk games? I just don't want a massive mess to sort through after import. I don't even know what 80% of these games are.
Lordmonkus
You should get the screen where you filter out the games if you are using the stand alone Mame for your Arcade platform or if you scrape as Mame.
Hoakypoaky
i was setting up to use retroarch as my emulator. You're saying I need to use the standalone 188 mame emulator to filter that junk out? i thought I needed some "all killer no filler bat file'? I have no idea what that means.
Lordmonkus
During the import process when you get to this screen check the bottom option "Force using Mame metadata". That will bring up the filtering screen on the next screen. The "All killer no filler" bat file is simply a batch file that copies out a smaller stripped down selection of games from a full set. It is by no means necessary but it is nice for people who want a smaller curated selection of roms. I used to to put on my HTPC which only has a 160 GB hard drive. Hoakypoaky
Ahhh thank you! I've been struggling for hours with this. Any other import tips? I put the split ROMs & the CHDs into their own separate folders, then placed those in a folder called mame 188 ROMs, then selected that single folder for import. Will it sort the ROMs & CHDs accordingly? Not sure if the was a box I had to check
Lordmonkus
Not sure how that will work since I do not use CHDs at all, but it should not sort them accordingly in Launchbox since they are all being imported to the same platform (assuming Arcade). Hoakypoaky
What about "combine ROMs with matching titles into a single game"? the default settings checked that box. What does that do? Should it be checked when using split ROMs?
DOS76
combine roms adds clones as additional apps so say there is 5 versions of 1942 you can right click on the game image in LB and play anyone you want
