twilight_universe
Hi there, I've been following all of the tutorials for Retroarch and the only core that's giving me problems is Mupen64plus. I downloaded the core in Retroarch, but the core refuses to play my rom (Goldeneye 007) when I select it. Retroarch simply crashes. I am able to play Nintendo 64 roms with the core, ParaLLEl N64... It runs the same rom just fine, however, when I attempt to use Mupen, it says 'Retroarch has stopped working' and the program closes out. Any ideas? Thank you. twilight_universe
I forgot to mention, I have a GTX 1080 with Open GL 4.6... I'm using the latest version of Retroarch and I'm on Windows 10.
Lordmonkus
Not sure why it wouldn't be working for you other than maybe you got the Vulkan driver loaded for the video and you have a shader trying to load or something. I use the Mupen64 core without issue.
twilight_universe
Okay, this is weird. Based on your comment, Lordmonkus, I re-downloaded a portable zip of retroarch (not the installer version that installs in your %appdata% folder) and loaded up Mupen... and it WORKED. ...and yet, I don't have any shaders running in my original retroarch... Is there any way to confirm if mupen is running a shader that I'm not aware of?
Lordmonkus
You can check the retroarch.cfg, look for the line: video_shader = If it just has a pair of quotes after it with nothing in between there is no shader being loaded through that. Also, it's not that it can't use shaders at all it's just that an incompatible shader could cause it to crash.
twilight_universe
Did the search. There's nothing there but the pair of quotes... so I'm now wondering if something is corrupt in my retroarch folder. Is there a way to port over everything, including save states -- to the other retroarch which is working with mupen?
Lordmonkus
Yeah you can copy of the saves and states folder and any other folder you want though of course if you copy over the config folder you maybe copying over something that is causing the issue to begin with. twilight_universe
I can confirm. After playing with settings, copying new versions of retroarch into my portable folder/etc -- IF you have 'AUTO SAVE STATE' and 'AUTO LOAD STATE' turned to ON in the saving options, Mupen64plus will not work. I couldn't figure out, for the life of me, why Mupen wasn't working. After several hours of playing with settings, I am able to reproduce the issue each time by turning on the 'auto save states' option. Thanks again for the help, Lordmonkus! twilight_universe
At the very least, it doesn't work with Goldeneye 007. I haven't tried other roms yet.
Lordmonkus
Certain games may need specific core settings to make them work, it's just the nature of N64 emulation. Though if you have the CPU to drive it the Parallel core is more accurate and should require less tinkering with settings to make games work. You can read more about it here https://www.libretro.com/index.php/parallel-n64-with-multithreaded-angrylion-released/
twilight_universe
I actually have the Parallel core, too. I was trying to get Mupen working because I read that netplay was better with it. Just off the cuff, can you play Goldeneye 007 Netplay with Parallel? If you don't know, that's fine! Lordmonkus
Yeah I don't know if Parallel works with netplay or not, but the theory is that any core that supports save states will support netplay but in turn can severely impact the games performance to the point on unplayability which to my knowledge was still an issue with Mupen64 as well. Your mileage may vary of course
twilight_universe
Guess I'll have to test it out! I'll try to remember to post back here when I do. Thank you again, Lordmonkus. I really appreciate the help!
TonyRamirez
Retroarch chocked on many game systems higher than 16-bit which is why I use Project64 for N64 games after adding some third party plugins it runs better.
