t-k-4-2-1
Before update all working. Update, nothing will launch. Rollback results in launchbox not opening at all. Pretty disappointing given all the time invested in configuring. Not ok for purchased software. Who has the time to start all over with these projects. Never update mame given the tricky balance in versions and roms. Apparently should never update launchbox either.

Im going to assume you are using a old version of MAME, simply go to tools/manage emulators/MAME and remove this command line entry, MAME should now work as usual. t-k-4-2-1
Thank you- Changing this allows roms to launch again. You are right they are -very- old. I did not find a known issues doc, but may not know where to look. Big box now has 2 errors, but still launches. Likely caused by the few hours of troubleshooting that I can work on later. thanks

You seem very keen to be able to update Launchbox, but dont seem to have that same passion for MAME, why is that? The MAME emulation has come a long way. Also that new command line will work on versions of MAME going back over three years, so yes you have a very old set. Those two errors are because you downgraded your version of Launchbox, without first posting your issue here, this whole issue could of been solved very quickly and without errors, but anyway. Those are VLC errors because VLC was updated recently and you downgraded to a older Launchbox version that needs the older version of VLC. Simply close Launchbox and delete the VLC folder inside the Launchbox folder, Launchbox will re-create that VLC folder on next launch. t-k-4-2-1
OK- I can live without that feature, but see how it could be useful. I'll follow the fix for VLC. I'm OK 'freezing' my launchbox version now knowing that features may be added that cause problems for older versions of MAME. From prior front ends, it did not occur to me that updating the launcher could impact the emulator. They were likely more basic or required you to manually edit cfg files yourself. The first that looks for updates itself for sure. Not looking to update MAME (again) is just due to having started with it ~20 years ago back when you had to physically mail CD's to a contact that was willing to copy and mail back. DOS, editing text config files, clrmame, etc. Everything manual and took a lot of time troubleshooting to get things working. 149 is 'current' to me (37b lasted a long time) and only have trouble with a game or two. I'm not sure how many times I've updated at this point. Have also been through MAMEwah, hyperspin and others over the years to have the cabinet easy for people to use. Maybe things are more push button now to get things going with newer sets, but if it was stable and configured you left it alone unless you had a lot of time on your hands. Not sure what I'm missing in the newer emulation (aside from games from the late 90's on) and perhaps it now only takes a few hours to set up. In the past was a huge undertaking- and most sites from the past are long gone. -thanks

Retro808
LOL. Depending on your ISP it might take longer to download a new full Mame romset than it would to set up a newer version of Mame with updated roms.
Lordmonkus
Yeah, depending on your internet speed / usage caps downloading an entire set can be a bit of a pain but actually finding them is not difficult, Pleasure Dome is the best place but you have to maintain a share to not get blacklisted. The Internet Archive has lots of sets available even though they aren't quite up to the very latest they are pretty close, I Just took a quick look and they have the 209 Merged set. I certainly won't ever recommend anyone update with every release but once in a while you should because of emulation accuracy improvements (ie; Qsound), less bugs (ie; Sunset Riders), more games working (ie; Akai Katana), more video options (ie; HLSL and BGFX shaders). t-k-4-2-1
Thanks- I think I used internet archive for the 149 set I have. Maybe it's time again if a set that recent is around. Sort of humorous to see that downloading a full romset is still a challenge after all this time. I guess twice the games with more recent/larger games will do that. Lordmonkus
If you want to have a smaller hand picked set of games it's not hard to do but does require some extra steps. What I do is I have rented a seedbox which I use to download a store complete sets from PleasureDome, it takes about 10 minutes to update the set each month to the seedbox. From there I have a hand picked set of games from the Non-Merged rom set because it's "one rom = 1 game", the file contains everything necessary to run the game including bios. I then have a simple plain text list of all the rom zip files which I can copy paste into WinSCP as a filter to only show all those files on my seedbox. Then I can download those files only and only the "new and updated" files get transferred over, it doesn't copy a file that has the exact same time and date. My 430 rom list takes about 5-10 minutes to download on my meager 12 Mbit download speed internet.
