whazzzzzup17 Posted January 10, 2020 Posted January 10, 2020 Just wondering, as I've seen some topics regarding Joy2Key and users using RocketLauncher. My assumption was Launchbox/BigBox can do it all. Are these needed anymore and should I take some time to download it and map my controllers? Quote
Lordmonkus Posted January 10, 2020 Posted January 10, 2020 That will depend on your setup. I don't use either so for me the answer is no. I don't use any external software in my setup, just LB and emulators. Your setup and needs may differ. Quote
whazzzzzup17 Posted January 10, 2020 Author Posted January 10, 2020 Gotcha, so if I'm understanding Launchbox should be able to work for any console without any need for RocketLauncher or Joytokey if setup correctly. I have a few consoles and they all run without Joytokey and RocketLauncher fine, but curious if I'm missing out on something Quote
Lordmonkus Posted January 10, 2020 Posted January 10, 2020 It just depends on the emulator and how much crazy stuff you want to do with it or force it to do which isn't built in. Quote
fromlostdays Posted January 10, 2020 Posted January 10, 2020 You could use a keymapper for any emulator that doesn't support a controller, or if you want to get more fancy/complicated with your controller bindings. For instance, I use Rewasd for some DOS games, and I also have a "Desktop" profile on it so I can use the controller to start up BigBox etc. But at this point, and especially with Retroarch covering so many systems, keymappers are becoming much less needed. Rocketlauncher won't provide much extra functionality either. I stopped using it a while ago. At this point it's really just for people who want extreme customization on stuff like fades, bezels and the Pause menu, or if you ever find yourself wanting to put a bezel/overlay on an emulator that doesn't support it natively. I were building for the first time, I wouldn't anticipate any needs from either, and if I ran into something obscure I wanted to do with the controller or with some art, I might look to see if a keymapper or rocketlauncher could do it at that point, but that's pretty much it. My assumption was Launchbox/BigBox can do it all. Are these needed anymore and should I take some time to download it and map my controllers? Well the reason I still prefer rocketlauncher for keymapping is because it takes care of it all from within a GUI. it launches joy2key for you to setup your profile, you save it, then apply it to the platform, or the game, all from within the GUI. And then it will launch joy2key as it launches the game, or a platform specific one if that's all you need. I'd love for Launchbox to finally add a little GUI for joy2key profile creation, saving, and launching. I don't see why we still need to mess with command line stuff and scripting, when so many other quality of life features are being developed for Launchbox. Really need a few last big ones, and then there's literally no need for anything else but Launchbox. Or have a plug-in person develop something. Like the Superpause menu, which has now taken away my need for Rocketlauncher for pause. And the customimages start up screen loader, which has taken away my need for Rocketlauncher fade screens. Retroarch is doing all my bezels now, besides like one or two systems. So don't really need Rocketlauncher for that exclusively anymore. Just need joy2key gui easy setup stuff in launchbox, and navigation key-mapping per-controller configs for bigbox. I don't use 90% of the new features that come out with each update, so it would be nice to have these two things finally added. Quote
