Why do so many of my ROMs not work in MAME

Ok thanks neil9000, I understand now. But how do I know if a rom set has Street Fighter Alpha 2 in it before I get it. So is "MAME 0.220 ROMs (merged)" a full rom set? And what if the game I want is not in it. Is there a way to find a rom set with the games I want in it, or is it just a case of scrolling down each one until you find one that has the games in it the you want.

It will always be in it, a mame romset contains everything. If its not in a full mame romset, be it merged, non-merged or split then its simply not a arcade game.

This is what happens now when I try to run the game in command prompt. Its really weird because it worked before?

Anybody know what this error is looks like something to do with Direct3D?

Direct3D: Initialize
Direct3D: Configuring adapter #0 = NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
Direct3D: Using dynamic textures
Direct3D: YUV format = RGB
Direct3D: Max texture size = 16384x16384
Unable to create the Direct3D device (8876086C)
Unable to initialize Direct3D 9
Fatal error: Unable to complete window creation

As i have already said to you twice in this thread, downloading random roms is a recipe for disaster. You should really just get a fullset then you know you have everything you actually need for the games to run correctly. MAME is not a case of just downloading a rom and playing it like other systems. Roms will rely on files that may also be in what seem like completely unrelated game zips. As they were often on the same hardware boards they use a Parent structure, take for example Street Fighter 2, in order to run the Championship edition version you also need the original version as most of the data is in that rom still, only the actual differences are in the championship edition rom. You also need bios files that may be in the parent rom and not the clone rom.

So I now have the full .220 rom set but I am still getting the above error. I don't know how it ran before. I can't get any game to run now : (
