MAME - reasons to upgrade from 0.182?

Hello all, I have MAME v 0.182 I set up about 4 years ago. I'm looking for compelling reasons to upgrade, if any. If I'm honest, I don't really care about computer chess, or handheld games from the 80's, or obscure curios and the like. But if there were legit new arcade games that have been newly dumped or made to work/work better in the past 4 years, that may be tempting. Especially if those games are shoot 'em ups, racing games, or platformers. But anything of note, really. I'd also like to get into Pinball emulation eventually if there has been any advances there.

It's surprisingly hard to find a straightforward list of newly emulated MAME games, etc. There used to be youtube vids every month, From I think SimplyRussian? But those ended years ago. Can anyone point me in the direction of such info, or simply shout out some key arcade titles that have been rendered playable in the past 4 years?

Reason I'm asking now is my lovely ISP will be imposing a lovely new "feature" called a data cap in March. Since a new MAME set is obviously a hefty download, I'd want to DL a set before then, if there enough compelling reasons to do so. Thanks for any information! Cheers

to be honest I don't know about worth while games but in all reality updating MAME is really easy 1st you grab a program called Torrentcheck (link below) then you fill out its simple UI to do what you want it to do then you point it towards the latest torrent and the directory where your MAME ROMs are located. Next you run the check where if depending on what you set it to do will remove unneeded and wrong sized files then you basically start the torrent let your torrent client check it and it will just fill in what is missing. As you can see from my image I downloaded 797MB this month to update my set I didn't have to run any tools like CLRMAMEPro or rebuild my set TorrentCheck and my torrent client did all the work for me. I hope that this is helpful for you in making your decision in updating. As a disclaimer I'd like to add that since you are updating so many version you will most likely have more than 700+MB to update your set as I do mine every month.

The whatsnew_XXXX.txt tells you exactly what is new and is broken into categories like New Working Machines / New Working Clones and other changes. Every release gets this txt file and you can easily see the changes. I usually just look over that and if nothing stands out I do not upgrade.

Only problem I see with that is he's on 0.182 so that's a lot of what'snew's to read

Yahtzee!! This looks like just the thing. I'll have a little fun playing with this over the weekend. I knew of CLRMAMEPro but I thought that with my MAME set so far out of date that the only real option was to start from scratch and DL a new set. Thanks! As you say it will be more than 700MB but a whole new MAME set with CMDs would be more like 700 *GB*. So I can probably save a lot of data.

Also lets not forget that the emulation provided by the MAME emulator itself also improves and gets more accurate every month. So its a far better emulator now than it was four years ago.

Thank you. I also posed a similar question on reddit/MAME and someone said MAME ran faster and someone else indicated there are some graphical enhancement filters. Very valid reasons for upgrading even if there few if any killer "unicorn" games that have been added at this stage which is what I've been mainly fixated on in terms of bothering to update, until now.

Thank you! This is useful. I don't see a way to actually access these lists from the MAME site. However, replacing the version portion of the address above with what other version you want to see (i.e. replace 0228 with 0225, etc) seems to work. It's still hard to sift through and sort the wheat from the chaff in terms of new games added that you actually might want to play, but it's very useful and better info than I had.

One last question if you all don't mind - I don't actually need the "software list" MAME romset versions, right? Unless I intend to use MAME to emulate consoles that MESS used to do like sega genesis, PS1, etc. -  which I don't.

Are there any non-arcade systems where there's no good option other than MAME? I haven't really come across any. Colecovision?

On Mame’s site when you go to download the latest version just scroll down a bit you will see the whats new txt link. If you wanna see it for any past version just go to the Downloads > Previous Versions page and each version has the txt listed as well.
