Dreamstate's - 4K and 8K - Realistic Vertical MAME Overlays
Dreamstate replied to Dreamstate's topic in Game Media
Glad you like them. I'll continue these when I can. The next month is going to be busy for me but after that if things aren't too crazy I'll complete a bunch i have almost completed like the Rock-Ola series and more Zaccaria cabs. -

Universal Zero Hour 8k I cleaned and restored all the scans for this overlay and decided to throw it all together for a different look where the artwork is presented fully and flat as it was made by the artist. At some point I'll create a vertical overlay for Zero Hour in the usual style I post here. I just thought this looked cool. zerohour.zip -

Gate Of Doom horizontal 8k overlay. This bezel isn't a scan I restored. I painstakingly pieced together 6 photos that a kind owner of this cab gave to me. It took me weeks of 10 hour days to get it all to come together and resemble the full original piece of artwork you see now. Add another 2 or 3 days for the instructions card. gatedoom.zip -
Absolutely marvelous sir! I decided to throw a higher resolution version of my bezel on your Gate Of Doom overlay and make it 8k. Posted in my overlay thread. Thanks for featuring it in your pack.

Zaccaria Puck Man 8k I'm including the Zaccaria horizontal overlay I made a while back in this zip. The cab sides were made by Orionsangel and the arcade reflection is by Mr. RetroLust. Note: I had to change the name of the zip file to pacman to get the site to upload it. I tried 10 times and noticed it uploaded every other file i threw at it except this one. I changed the name just to see if it would upload and BAM, done. I don't know what's going on with the site but whatever. Simply change the name of the zip file to puckman.zip and you should be good to go. Everything inside the zip is fine. I replaced the arcade reflection from Mr.RetroLust on the vertical overlay with my own. pacman.zip -
Mr. RetroLust's - Mame 4K - Lights Out - Realistic Bezels / Artwork
Dreamstate replied to Mr. RetroLust's topic in Game Media
Well If you prefer to do it that way, it's as easy as just renaming your bezel to backdrop in the layfile. Normally this wouldn't work if you had anything on the bezel game area like your arcade reflection with the scratches and such. The game screen would sit on top and you wouldn't see any of the reflections. But since this is a vector game everything on screen is blank except the game vectors. So it works easy and looks fine. warrior.zip -
Mr. RetroLust's - Mame 4K - Lights Out - Realistic Bezels / Artwork
Dreamstate replied to Mr. RetroLust's topic in Game Media
Nope, this doesn't work. All the artwork is on top of the game screen. The only way you'll be able to see through the backdrop is if you make it transparent like your arcade reflection and you haven't done that. Simplest way to check is simply to open it up in any photo vieweer. The whole game screen is black. That means it's not transparent. But be aware, you reduce brightness of images when you make them transparent. The background will look dim and the game play will also not look as bright with imagery on top of it even if it's transparent. What you want to do is have a background image behind the game screen and then something on top of it. You have to have two separate image files. One, the background/back image. Two, the foreground/front image/top. Make the background the "backdrop" label it "backdrop" in the layfile. Then you have your normal bezel on top. <element name="backdrop"> <backdrop element="backdrop"> The backdrop comes first in order on your layfile and everything down from there goes on top in order of view. Example: <!-- warrior.lay --> <mamelayout version="2"> <element name="marquee"> <image file="warrior_marquee.png" /> </element> <element name="cpanel"> <image file="warrior_panel.png" /> </element> <element name="speakers"> <image file="speakers.png" /> </element> <element name="backdrop"> <image file="warrior.png" /> </element> <element name="bezel"> <image file="warrior_bezel.png" /> </element> <view name="Marquee"> <backdrop element="backdrop"> <bounds x="936" y="2290" width="2130" height="1550" /> </backdrop> <bezel element="bezel"> <bounds x="0" y="0" width="4000" height="4243" /> </bezel> <marquee element="marquee"> <bounds x="0" y="-1000" width="4000" height="1000" /> </marquee> <screen index="0"> <bounds x="1125" y="2440" width="1750" height="1314" /> </screen> </view> <view name="Full_Cabinet"> <bounds x="0" y="-800" width="4000" height="7100" /> <backdrop element="backdrop"> <bounds x="936" y="2290" width="2130" height="1550" /> </backdrop> <bezel element="bezel"> <bounds x="0" y="0" width="4000" height="4243" /> </bezel> <marquee element="marquee"> <bounds x="0" y="-800" width="4000" height="1000" /> </marquee> <screen index="0"> <bounds x="1125" y="2440" width="1750" height="1314" /> </screen> <cpanel element="cpanel"> <bounds x="0" y="4263" width="4000" height="2200" /> </cpanel> </view> <view name="Full_Cabinet_Lit"> <bounds x="0" y="-800" width="4000" height="7100" /> <backdrop element="backdrop"> <bounds x="936" y="2290" width="2130" height="1550" /> </backdrop> <bezel element="bezel"> <bounds x="0" y="0" width="4000" height="4243" /> <color red = "0.3" green = "0.3" blue = "1.0" /> </bezel> <marquee element="marquee"> <bounds x="0" y="-800" width="4000" height="1000" /> </marquee> <screen index="0"> <bounds x="1125" y="2440" width="1750" height="1314" /> </screen> <cpanel element="cpanel"> <bounds x="0" y="4263" width="4000" height="2200" /> <color red = "0.3" green = "0.3" blue = "1.0" /> </cpanel> </view> <view name="Upright_Artwork"> <bounds x="0" y="320" width="2500" height="2332" /> <backdrop element="backdrop"> <bounds x="585" y="1431" width="1331" height="969" /> </backdrop> <bezel element="bezel"> <bounds x="0" y="0" width="2500" height="2652" /> </bezel> <screen index="0"> <bounds x="703" y="1525" width="1094" height="820.5" /> </screen> </view> <view name="Cropped_Artwork"> <bounds x="0" y="730" width="2500" height="1922" /> <backdrop element="backdrop"> <bounds x="585" y="1431" width="1331" height="969" /> </backdrop> <bezel element="bezel"> <bounds x="0" y="0" width="2500" height="2652" /> <color red = "0.3" green = "0.3" blue = "1.0" /> </bezel> <screen index="0"> <bounds x="703" y="1525" width="1094" height="820.5" /> </screen> </view> </mamelayout> <!-- -

Zaccaria Mr.Do! 8k Note: Last update to this overlay, I promise. I added the authentic Zaccaria Mr.Do! Instructions card. I restored a scan of it yesterday provided by Paul Swan. The old one on this overlay was a Universal instructions card that was altered to fit the Zaccaria Starsplash bezel that went with the Zaccaria Mr.Do! cabinets. Enjoy. Insane amount of overlays In that pack. You'll always be one of my go to artists when I need reference material, and I still have so much to learn from your work.

Yes, not only interesting but proper and correct unless you are 20 feet away and photographing the cab with a zoom lens. And then the entire cab looks funny and 2 dimensional. Depth and a sense of reality are lost when you squish everything into the confines of a 16:9 frame. I make my overlays look like the viewer is looking at a cab from a normal playing distance or a few feet away. If you want to see what i mean, download some photos of arcade cabs straight on like my overlays look. Take those photos and zoom in when you have a vertical 16:9 view until the edges of the bezel touch the sides. I'll bet that the sides of the cpo and marquee are cut off. That's because both the cpo and marquee are closer to you. And In fact this is what i usually do to get the proper perspective for cabs, I use photos as reference under my work so my work looks realistic. Check out the photos I've attached for reference. Doing this prevents my work from looking off. For example, there's a better chance my joystick ball tops will be the right size, that they won't be the size of tennis balls like i see on other peoples overlays. That everything will be the proper size and look like it's existing in a real 3 dimensional environment rather than in some fantasy world where things look wacky or off. Also keep in mind my purpose for creating these isn't to provide marquees for others creating vertical overlays. I've noticed that some people out there are literally taking my marquees, cutting and pasting them onto their own vertical overlays and taking the credit for all my work and not crediting me at all. These overlays here are strictly for my own amusement. I am sharing them as they are because they're meant for me. So be glad I'm sharing what i do and that i thank and credit others who provide reference i use in these overlays. I could just decide to start taking everything others create and never credit them at all. I really don't have the time to instructional videos, and pretty soon I won't even be able to regularly post overlays here. There's mountains of instructional PS tutorials out there that will give you volumes more skills than I could ever possibly teach you anyway.
