  1. The new "Platform Hybrid" view is nice and smooth, but I did notice one problem. It may only be on my end, but I'm not able to go back to the Platform Categories menu while using this particular view. From a games menu, the ESC keys works fine, but it won't work when I want to go back to the (first) Platform Categories menu. I have to use another method like changing a view with a hotkey to get out of the Platforms and get back to the Platform Categories menu.

  2. As @Suhrvivor mentioned, I'd get rid of Rocketlauncher as it's pretty much obsolete and Launchbox can provide most of its functions, or you can use the Bezel Project and other plugins to get the job done. However, if you still need to use Rocketlauncher, here's an old but still relevant method-tutorial on how to use the two programs together.

    Any idea what the command line would be to get them to run in launchbox?

    Altirra doesn't require any special command line in Launchbox and should just run the games directly even if they're compressed. As an option though, you can add "/f" (remove the quotes) to the default command-line parameters if you want the games to open full screen.

    Thank you. Stupid question, does AppleWin need to be in the Launchbox\Emulators folder or can it be anywhere? I assume it doesn't auto install like RetroArch did when importing ROMS.

    It really shouldn't matter where it's located, as long as you set up Launchbox properly and put the proper location in the "Application Path" within the emulator configuration

    Looking for settings to setup AppleWin. The link at the beginning of the topic is dead.

    Hopefully this will help you out. The following setup works for me, using AppleWin with disk-based games.

    In "Default Command Line Parameters" use: -f -d1

    Also, if you want to use the 'esc' key to exit, enter the following in "Running Script"

    ; This section closes AppleWin when pressing Escape
     $Esc::
     {
         Process, Close, {{{StartupEXE}}}
     }

    In 7+ years of updates the one thing LB has never resolved is speed.

    Put 1 system on it and you will be flying ...

    Put 200+ systems on like a Hyperspin setup and it's literally unusable.

    Hyperspin 2.0 is literally using the same processes as LB is now and let's just say it's woeful in comparison to Hyperspin 1.5

    Hyperspin/RocketLauncher literally had it all, yet for some insane reason they decided to go another way for 2.0.

    I'm certainly not a 'techie' who can back up this theory, but in my opinion there's only 1 reason why the original Hyperspin runs so fast/smooth. It's because HS is such an old program with very few features which is now running on (mostly) modern day machines. I'm sure if you ran an older version of Launchbox from 2015, you'd get much faster results too. That's a theory that probably needs to be tested though.

    Know Fact HS runs faster.. Tons of post topics on it.. Still staying positive it come's around..

    HS only runs faster because it has a very limited amount of features and looks like a windows program from 20 years ago (which it basically is). Anyone could search the internet for weeks and not find "tons of post topics" about HS running faster. Having said all of that, I do hope its new version does perform well because it's nice to see HS making progress and it's nice to see some competition happening.

    And depending on how long ago that was, ffmpeg also gets their own updates, so you never know these days.

    Good observation. Are you still crashing in beta 4? I'm not crashing when using your theme but it brought up a good point that the old star rating elements (which were just text and didn't ever perform well), were replaced with new elements that play a lot nicer. Looks like the old element still needs the binding refresh treatment in order for them to properly show the correct user rating. We'll get that done before release.

    @faeran Yep, still having the same issue unfortunately with beta 4. It happens randomly after the 4th or 5th time I change a star rating in LaunchBox

    Good deal. Not sure exactly what the issue was. If it was with the theme itself everyone would be getting the error, but since I wasn't, I can only assume it was a combination of some theme code and another factor on your machine.

    @faeran Thanks again for the quick follow up. I did a little more observing and investigating recently. I may have found out exactly where and how it's crashing with this particular "LBPlex 2023" theme. Whenever I go to change the star-rating in the right hand side (games detail) panel, LaunchBox crashes immediately afterwards. However, it doesn't crash like this with other LB themes. I guess that might help clear things up a bit, as it's another issue related to the stars ratings and LB custom themes.

    Something you can do as a good way to test attract mode.

    • Make sure you are using the default theme and mark down which platform and game views you are using
    • Make sure you are using VLC as the playback engine (WMP has known long term memory leak issues)
    • Make sure you aren't using any third party integrations that could impact the test, LEDBlinky and things like that

    Test long term and see if you are seeing the same results. If you are:

    • Remove both your Images and Videos folder

    Test long term and see if you are seeing the same results. If not, bring back either the Images or Videos folder and test again. If you crash, then you know it's something in one of those folders.

    After that, you can PM me your results, along with your system specs.

    The good news is that this has been a thing for a while. Remove your current games from the Vita platform, make sure Vita3k is configured and working and add it to LaunchBox. We scrape the emulator itself and import games directly from it during the auto-import process.

    Thanks for the report.

    First guess is that this could be an unintended side-effect of the .NET 9 update. We will see what we uncover and see if there's anything we can do about it.

    That's too bad. I downloaded your theme, but am not seeing what you are seeing, so it's probably not related to the theme itself. It could be related to your data files in some way. You could send me a PM of your data files and I may have some time to look into this later this week.

    You can also test whether it's a theme specific issue just by changing your theme and seeing if that stops the crashing for you.

    @faeran Thanks again for getting back to me on this error/issue. I tried out another theme, the newly released "Frogg" LB theme and haven't had any issues happen in the past few days of testing. So, it's probably safe to assume there's something in the latest beta code that's causing issues with the older custom themes?

    Did some testing, but not seeing this unfortunately. It could possibly be related to an additional app launching or a specific hardware configuration. Might be worth opening its own troubleshooting thread on it.

    Thanks. This is a known issue with the beta and will be fixed before release.

    Star rating is a known issue with the beta and will be fixed before release.

    It definitely could be an issue with your theme, although the entire crash report is being cut off. Do you have a special version of the theme that's not up on the forums?

    Thanks a lot for the quick reply. This theme is available in the forums and can be found here:

    @faeran I've been using this custom theme for the past 3 years or so, and this is the first time I've come across these frequent errors/crashes. My guess is that the latest changes caused some issues with some of the custom LB themes

  12. @faeran @Jason Carr I've reported this error on bitbucket about a week ago, but with the latest beta, Launchbox is doing a lot of random crashing on me. I'm assuming it's an issue with the theme I'm using (LBPlex 2023), although I've never had any crashes like this before the recent betas were released. Also, there's a weird issue with the star ratings, as they're showing inaccurate/wrong stars on the screen - for example the game has a community rating of 4.3 but there are 2.5 stars there. My somewhat educated guess is that this custom theme was messed up by the recent changes in the latest beta? Hope you guys can help out somehow

    I've been playing with the HyperSpin 2.0 beta for a few hours now.  Unfortunately, the beta is super buggy, and doesn't work most of the time.

    Same here. I haven't used HS for several years but I'm a "Platinum" member and tried out their latest 2.0 release a few days ago. It's pretty buggy and disappointing from what I've noticed, and actually I was looking forward to trying it out with a pretty open mind at the same time. The HyperHQ program is decent enough but it just seems like a very scaled down version of LaunchBox or PlayNite. I give the creators/programmers credit for trying to 'revive' Hyperspin, but I think it may have become something worse than what it originally was. It's still early in the game, though.

    No, you can't use those old Hyperspin themes either, it's all completely different (It looks like everything needs to be created via the new HyperTheme)

    Currently, to me it's looking like a disaster as all the stuff people have spend decades creating are useless with Hyperspin 2.0

    It also looks like they are focusing on it being practically impossible to sell on unless you are a coding genius.

    Basically, this sounds like a completely different program with the same name. The HS fans will probably love it for a day or two after it's been released, until they realize that all of their previous effort/files/etc. won't be compatible with it. Again, I hope that I'm wrong and a little competition never hurts. However, I left HS several years ago and don't plan to go back even if this has some 'groundbreaking' features which I don't think will happen, at least not for now.

    🤣 Light years behind ?

    Even with a PC used by NASA it would still be sluggish.

    Yes there is no doubting it looks fantastic, has lots of great features Hyperspin doesn't (currently) but pointless when you can't navigate or play any games on it without it grinding to a halt.

    Hyperspin on the other hand (in conjunction with RL) is lightning fast, no matter what you add to it.

    I have both setup with 300+ systems (600+ on Hyperspin) and I still use Hyperspin 10/10 days because of it's speed.

    Running Launchbox and BigBox with a PC here that's about 4 years old, hardly what anyone would call "NASA" technology, and they both run fine with little to no sluggishness. Honestly though, I do think EmulationStation (in its latest form) does run a bit more snappy and if I was using an older PC I'd probably use that more often. I used Hyperspin for about 4-5 years and found it pretty annoying to set up, with very little reward in the end. Also, Hyperspin's speed is not exactly a game-changer for me. Having said that though, the more options there are among all of the emulator frontends, the more of a win-win situation it is for everyone. I'll certainly be checking out this 2.0 release whenever it happens to be released.

    Now we know what they have been doing for the past 10 years 👍

    Launchbox's worst nightmare has just come true.

    Doubtful. It's funny how Hyperspin fans sh** all over Launchbox boasting about a program that is very much obsolete and light years behind. I'd be really surprised if this new "Hyperspin 2" is anything groundbreaking, and is anything more than the same exact frontend re-written with a slightly more modern code. However, I hope I'm wrong about that because it's certainly nice to have some competition.

    My issue with this is games like Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfentstein use Escape to save the game prior to exiting.  So would I just use a Wait command in the script?

    That would probably work but then again, I'm not really all that familiar with scripts. You could always try that approach and see what happens.

    Thanks for this post.  I was searching for Applewin to see how people have set it up.   I think I have it down except I can't close out of a game and return back to launchbox.  Any issues using mame for this? or is still the esc key? I don't use mame for anything by arcade roms.

    Also do you use xpadder, joy2key or something similar for apple ii games?

    This works for me. With AppleWin, put the following code in the "Running Script"  (under "Options", "Edit Emulator") and you should be able to use the esc key to exit out of a game

    ; This section closes AppleWin when pressing Escape
     $Esc::
     {
         Process, Close, {{{StartupEXE}}}
     }

    @Orionsangel more excellent work and thanks for sharing these! Just out of curiosity though, how were you able to use a bezel with PSVita? As far as I know there's no Vita core for Retroarch

    I know this is an old topic. I have the same issue with Pitfall not starting. I don't have a problem with Pitfall II. It's one of my faves so any pointers or help would be very much appreciated. I'm not sure if it's possible to have game-specific cores in RA ? Or some simpler way of just editing the code in the rom or whatever? Thanks

    Was curious about this as well, since I remember having the same issue a while back. Can't give any specific link of course, but if you do a search for "Pitfall (classic fix) 5200" that one should work with the Retroarch a5200 core.

    If I could physically eat my own shoe....I would. I didn't think this emulator was in their crosshairs.

    this leaves only sudachi that I am aware of. this one seems like an actual fork of Yuzu. It's GUI and general operation from a user perspective is basically the same. Literally set it up in the few mins it took me to write this post.

    I must have had a premonition that this was going to happen because I've always been happy with Yuzu. But last weekend I got Ryujinx setup just to see how much better/worse it is. Pretty glad I got the like 2nd to last release before this happened.

    Honestly, I'm surprised it took this long for Nintendo to go after Ryujinx after what they pulled off earlier this year with Yuzu. And while this recent news isn't surprising at all, it's definitely very disappointing and another huge loss for the emulation community. Lately, Nintendo is on a roll, in a very unpleasant way too.
