  1. Thanks everybody for the feedback. I think I'm going to stick to my original vision of the videos using the HyperSpin themes, where they dim after ~5 seconds to allow the genre logo to take focus. I'm glad you all are finding these useful!

These videos are awesome though I'd love to see ones for, Light gun games, Rhythm games, Flying Games, role playing games and Strategy games. I now these aren't all really arcade type games but they are Hyperspin Genres. I'd happly give 12 representative games for each one.

Sure thing, post your list of representative games and we can take it from there. Please keep in mind that I'll need to make some new logos as well.

Yeah these are great, I am using them for my arcade playlists now. I agree with the others about the latest video being a little too dark. Great concept though and I love that they use game music.

Thanks! I'm a huge music person, so having good tunes was key. I honestly get more excited to play by hearing the jams than seeing the videos. :D

Looks great!  Don't know if I like the constant pumping of logo like from hypertheme lol.  Don't know if it's my phone or not, but gameplay vids look super dark, and sound file seems noisy like old cassette tape. Again don't know if those are because I was watching on My phone or not.

You're tough to please! The gameplay vids are intentionally dimmed because otherwise it's super distracting visually, to the point of being unusable in my opinion.  I can verify that the sound isn't distorted, but it is from a 25-year-old arcade game so it's not exactly hi-fi. :P

Nice work!  i'd personally rather have just straight gameplay videos instead of old hyperspin themes crammed in together.  Any chance on doing that as well?

@damageinc86, here's a test version of 2D Fighting with gameplay footage only. What do you think?

  4. Hi all,

I'd like your feedback on my first draft of artwork for my upcoming MAME bartop build. I've decided to call it "ROM Runner," both as a nod to Blade Runner and a pun since it will literally run ROMs.  ::)

The visual theme takes heavy inspiration from modern interpretations of retro sci-fi, with the Tron-like grid and purple/blue color scheme.

Aside from the art itself, I'd also appreciate a functionality check on the labels for each player's admin buttons. "Credit" and "Start" are a given, and I think "Pause" makes sense, but I'm not sure about "Exit." It might be better to keep that set to a key combination that's not as easy to accidentally press. The control panel will definitely have four admin buttons, so I need to come up with something for the fourth button label.

    Thanks!

  5. Thinking about it a little more, I could use overlays/bezels for the vertically-oriented games in order to keep things consistent. The end result might be less visually distracting than the current videos as well. I'll revisit this in a couple of weeks when my build is finished. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks. If all the games chosen had 4:3 aspect ratios (which would be nigh-impossible for genres like vertical shooters) then it would be straightforward to do. For now though, I will just be enjoying these themes as-is and continuing the rest of the work for my arcade cabinet build.

  7. I've put together a set of frontend video themes intended to be used with arcade genre-based playlists.  The genres correspond roughly to the "All Killer, No Filler" playlists compiled by BadMouth and the ArcadeControls forum community:

    Spoiler
    • All Arcade
    • Beat 'Em Up
    • Boxing
    • Classics
    • Fighting
      • Fighting (2D)
      • Fighting (3D)
    • Platform
    • Puzzle
    • Racing
    • Run & Gun
    • Shoot 'Em Ups
      • Shooters (Horizontal)
      • Shooters (Vertical)
    • Sports
    • Wrestling

I designed the logos and edited the audio/video collages,  but much credit and many thanks are due to the EmuMovies community, HyperSpin community, and @CriticalCid for creating the game-specific video themes and capturing all the gameplay footage. The video files are hosted at EmuMovies and are available here.

Clear logos for these genre playlists are available here.

You can see a preview of the videos below on YouTube.

Thanks, I've been looking for something like this!

Would it be possible to make one called "Shoot 'em ups" that doesn't differentiate between vertical and horizontal? I have all mine lumped together :)

You're very welcome! I can definitely spin you a general "Shoot 'Em Ups" logo later today. Do you want it in the same style as the current ones?

I'll also make a general "Fighting" logo since people might have their 2D and 3D fighters combined.

ok ill point out none of these really hide the logging in process. I did actually follow this yt video with bcedit its how i got my pc to boot up with a black screen but you still see a brief login as it logs in.

I ended up putting a pacman character as my aavatar pic and renaming my profile "ARCADE BOOTING..." does the job. i dont think its possible to compltley remove it unfortunatley.

Sorry the info I linked wasn't helpful. Are you running Windows 10 Enterprise? I think that version is needed for this to work.

For the price I paid for the G4600, I could get the G4560 for the same price - right now there's a lot of demand for the G4560 for some reason. It could be mining or the price to performance ratio but overall I wanted it now instead of later so I got the G4600 which is faster and 2400mhz ram to match. The GPU isn't great for mining but I needed a low profile half height variant and I'm sure there was a small premium for that and limited availability. Will try rewiring tomorrow if I can.

So far running okay with out the GTX 1050 which shipped last night and I should have it tomorrow, hopefully after work! The on-board graphics are not great by any means but for now doing the job. Mednafen Saturn runs really well and I tried Darius Burst and it was running like a champ.

While it is low profile and my upgrade options are limited currently to processor and more memory (can't go faster though) I'm fine and having a blast compared to my last HTPC which was overkill.

I think it's all due to mining. From what I gather, mining is nearly all GPU-based so miners are springing for budget processors like the G4560 since it won't bottleneck their operation. Other budget CPUs in the same range also have inflated prices, not to mention all the GPUs. Thankfully for us gamers, the price of Etherum is dropping and difficulty of mining is increasing, so prices should stabilize if not drop significantly as the second hand market gets flooded with used gear.

  11. Looks great! I plan on using essentially the exact same PC components in my bartop arcade cabinet. It will primarily run MAME, but also newer fighters like Street Fighter, BlazBlue, and Injustice, so I'm targeting the solid 1080p gaming performance of the G4560 and GTX 1050Ti.

Keep us posted on how your rig turns out!

  12. I've recently ordered the Ultimate Widescreen bartop cabinet from Haruman Customs and now need to plan out my visual aesthetic for the marquee, side panels, and CPO.  What I'm thinking so far, since I love the CityHunter theme and will be using that in the arcade cab as well, is to stick with the 80s/retro/cyberpunk style. If all goes as planned, there should be a consistent look and feel with both the cabinet itself and the software.

My working title for the marquee is "ROM Runner."  I like this because it is a play on Blade Runner, keeping with the cyberpunk theme, and the system will literally run ROMs as it's a MAME arcade cabinet. My first mockup of the marquee is attached. What do you guys think?

Yeah I like to split mine up by platform so I can have a clear logo and custom platform media related to it. If I could have the option to have genre related clear logos and media with the nested filters (when we get them), I would be happy.

I'm in agreement with @JaysArcade on this, as to me one of the big benefits of using LaunchBox is the opportunity for library customization and beautification with images and videos. For now I have each primary arcade developer (Capcom, Konami, Midway, etc.) as its own platform, and a couple of catch-all platforms for smaller developers.

This has been working well for a while as I build my library, as for me a big appeal of LaunchBox/BigBox is the act of importing ROMs, acquiring missing artwork and video, and learning about each game as it's imported. However, now that I'm working on a bartop arcade and planning to have friends over to actually play games, I'm thinking differently about what would be more useful in a party environment.

What I think I'll do is have the bartop arcade start in playlist view, with playlists like the following:

    • Best of arcade playlists: top 10, top 25, top 50, top 100 from all genres
    • By decades: 80s, 90s, 00s (no more than 25-50 per decade)
    • By genres: beat 'em up, classics, fighting, platform, puzzle, racing, run and gun, shmup, sports (no more than 25 per genre)

When I'm playing solo, I can switch back to Platform view and browse as before, and make more detailed playlists for my own nerdy purposes.

  14. Arcade Cabinet Platform Banners

    View File

This is a set of arcade cabinet images intended to be used as banners for arcade platforms or playlists in BigBox. To achieve the look from the example screenshot, I recommend using my corresponding Simple Arcade Clear Logos set along with keltoigael's CityHunter theme.

After being inspired by the arcade section of viking's Hardware Platform Set I set out to create some arcade cabinet images with a more retro look, like the dedicated cabinets of the mid to late eighties and early nineties. In most cases I used Williams Electronics' Defender as a template, adding the marquee, side art, bezel, control panel overlay, and gameplay images of a representative game from each developer to create an end look that in many cases is very similar to the original cabinets. In some cases I took more creative license, such as with Cave's DoDonpachi, and in others simply polished and modified existing images of iconic cabinets, including BurgerTimeCentipede, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and the Neo Geo MVS system.

    Platforms/Games:

    • Arcade Classics: Cabal (TAD)
    • Arcade Shooters: Raiden (Seibu Kaihatsu)
    • Atari: Centipede
    • Capcom (non-CPS): 1943: The Battle of Midway
    • Capcom CPS-1: Street Fighter II: The World Warrior
    • Capcom CPS-2: Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes
    • Capcom CPS-3: Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
    • Cave: DoDonpachi
    • Data East: BurgerTime
    • Irem: R-Type II
    • Jaleco: The Astyanax
    • Konami: Contra
    • Midway: Mortal Kombat II
    • Namco: Pac-Man
    • Neo Geo: Multiple
    • Nintendo: Donkey Kong
    • Sega: Golden Axe
    • SNK (non-Neo Geo): Ikari Warriors
    • Taito: Space Invaders
    • Technos: Double Dragon
    • Tecmo: Rygar
    • Toaplan: Twin Cobra
    • Williams: Defender

    Installation instructions:

    • Unzip archive.
    • In LaunchBox, right-click on desired arcade platform or playlist, then click "Edit."
    • In the "Images" area on the right hand side, click "Add Image" and browse to the desired banner image.
    • Once the banner image has been added, right-click the banner image, select "Image Type," then "Banner."
    • In the "Notes" tab, copy and paste the platform text from "Platform Descriptions.txt" into the editable text field.
