R4032
Have a lot of problems with version 6.7 of Big Box. If I cycle thru the views everything is fine the first time around but if I cycle around a second time I start to loose box art images, I tried refreshing image cache but does not fix issue. Big Box also seems to lock up when I choose a game to see details when exiting out of details screen Big Box locks up have to ALT+ CTRL+ DELETE to shut down
imdavid555
Glad to hear I am not the only one. Have noticed these issues last night as well I can reproduce this issue by navigating games in Coverflow view then pressing hot key to change view to Coverflow with details. Once I start navigating again BigBox performance just tanks. Video become choppy (both WMP and VLC) and navigating through the menus is extremely slow. Tested on SSD and experienced same issues. Zombeaver
That's definitely odd. I just tested both of the things you mention and I'm not experiencing them on mine. Are you running any AV software? Maybe try adding your Launchbox folder to its whitelist if so. You might also want to try turning down your RAM cache size in Tools -> Options -> System -> RAM Cache since it looks like BB is straining your system a bit. I have only have Windows Defender running on my Windows 10 Pro computer. I added the entire Launchbox folder to the exclusions and nothing changed. Can still reproduce it. Have also tried: - Disabling RAM cache, Ram cache at 2GB, or Ram cache at 4GB - Change quality of cover flow images. Tested low, medium, and high. Also my specs are: G3258 processor Radeon HD 7850 graphics card 120 SSD Launchbox on external HDD 5400 RPM 8GB ram
Jason Carr
Thanks guys, we'll get the issues fixed. For what it's worth, the RAM cache setting only applies to LaunchBox and isn't used in Big Box. It took quite a bit of testing but I did just run into an issue...not sure if it's related or not. Got a message box saying I don't have write permissions to the LaunchBox folder, which obviously isn't true. Can you guys test to see if this is only happening while images are popping in/caching? I expect that it's most likely happening while it's building the cache. Do the issues go away after the cache is completely built? If blank images are coming up, that should mean that it's building the cache. However, they shouldn't randomly disappear either. Are you guys 100% certain that images are disappearing when they shouldn't be?
R4032
When I first start Big Box I have all my images loaded (I can see them all) when I cycle the views they are there until it cycles around one time then I start to loose images happens every time. I have no problems in launch box everything works great.
Jason Carr
Thanks, that helps. I'll dive in and see what I can do. Sounds like it might be because the previous views aren't getting disposed properly or something similar. It's odd that I can't replicate that no matter what I do, though. What version of Windows are you guys running? What version of the .NET framework do you have installed?
R4032
I am running windows 8.1 64 bit and have ver 4.6.2 .Net Framework
imdavid555
Did some more playing around and discovered that my FPS is tanking (into the single digits) when I am in both Cover Flow views which is why some images are not appearing and videos running poorly when navigating. Works fine in the other views though. So I'm going to use Games text view for now. I am running Windows 10 Pro and here are my versions of .NET installed
R4032
Ok I think I have fixed my issue I changed the video playback to Windows Media and everything is working correct. If I change it to VLC the issue comes back so I think there is something funky going on with the VLC player. Thanks for everyone's help. Jason Carr
Gotcha, thanks R4032. That really helps to pinpoint the issue. David, are you still seeing this when using WMP?
imdavid555
Hey Jason. Sorry I missed your reply. Yes I am using WMP and still having issues.
saber07
I am having a similar issue. I just setup my videos folders to use with BigBox and everything runs fine for a few minutes, but as I cycle through more games BigBox becomes increasingly slow and unusable. When I check the memory and CPU, BigBox is using upwards of 4-8gb of ram (I have 16gb total). If I close out of BigBox and reopen, everything is fine again but eventually devolves to the same issue. So I'm assuming it's not clearing the cache of images or videos over time. I am also using VLC for the video playback, I have not tried using WMP. DOS76
please try changing the video player as we have been having some users with issue from VLC
imdavid555
Had some spare time last night and decided to do a little troubleshooting. Created a new LaunchBox folder called "LaunchBoxTest". Did a fresh install of Launchbox there (latest stable release, no beta) and copied my XML, License, and Images+Videos for Virtual Boy. Had the images for Virtual Boy cached and it worked beautifully in CoverFlow. I went back to my regular setup and tried doing that on Virtual Boy there. Could not get the same results. Was just so very slow and video and images being very laggy. Then I went to Arcade (where I have over 4,000 games for this platform) and I held the "right" key on my keyboard. Performance was very choppy again here as well and then my computer Blue Screened. Definitely seems like a caching issue. Going to bring my Surface pro 4 from work today and test it out on there to see what happens (i7, 16GB ram, 256 SSD). Also may try transferring some more images and videos into my LaunchBoxTest folder to see what happens.
Jason Carr
Thank you David. I just put out a new beta (6.8-beta-3) that fixes a bunch of issues with the VLC video playback engine, including a memory leak. However, I'm not convinced that the issues in this thread are necessarily related. Regardless, if you guys can do some testing to see, that'd be greatly appreciated. I'll be back to this issue tomorrow.
saber07
I downloaded the newest beta and the performance was much better. I was able to continually scroll through my collection without any slowdowns over time. The only thing I ran into were two crashes which caused BigBox to close. I will try to post the error if it happens again.
Jason Carr
Okay, thanks saber. Hopefully we can get that error log so I can get it fixed.
imdavid555
Thanks again Jason! Tried the new beta last night and it didn't seem to make a difference when using VLC or WMP. Also copied over my Launchbox folder to my Surface Pro 4 and it made little difference. Was performing the same. Might start moving more images and videos to my fresh Launchbox install this week to see how it performs/makes a difference.
Jason Carr
Alright, I'm still unable to replicate the disappearing images issues in CoverFlow, David. Can you explain the issues that you're still seeing since yesterday's beta? Are you seeing any disappearing images? Or just performance issues? It also sounds like it's happening with you existing installation but doesn't seem to be happening with a new installation, which is interesting. Are you using the same image folders between the two installations?
