mADjAckJ
Hey guys I've bought a USB controller to use with Launchbox on my PC. How do i set it up for mame? I've done it for snes
Retro808
To set up your controller in Mame have your USB controller plugged in, launch a game and hit tab on your keyboard. this will open the Mame settings and from here you can set global Mame controls and unique controls for each machine/game. Just choose the control, hit enter on your keyboard, then hit to corresponding button on your USB controller you want to map it to.
mADjAckJ
Hi thanks for replying. That didn't work unfortunately. I can get to the screen you suggest and change the controls for P1 using the keyboard, but it won't recognize my button pushes on the controller. Abwezi
It might help to know more specifically what kind of controller you happen to be using, and also if you have any experience yet making this controller work on any other games or emulators? Asparky
I use the Attached file, it needs to be changed to a .cfg file. Place it into the MAME cfg file and select it from either the UI or settings setup. XARCADE_XBox360x4.txt
mADjAckJ
Thanks @Asparky I'm using mame 0.78 which i believe is command line only, how do i select the file using that one? @Abwezi I stated in the opening post that it works in Launchbox with the snes emulator fine Its a USB controller, an xbox replica type one. Retro808
Do you have another USB controller you can test with? Only reason I ask is I have had issues with some Xbox replica controllers not working in all emulators.
Asparky
@mADjAckJ I am affraid i cannot help you with that one, as I only use the updated versions of MAME and haven't used anything that old.
mADjAckJ
@Asparky I couldn't get the latest version working despite others best efforts on here. Plus i was told it was mainly for more recent games whereas i am happy with the retro classics Also i was told 0.78 had the best romset. @Retro808 I have now ordered a buffalo classic controller as they have had good reviews. DOS76
whoever told you that 0.78 is the best romset lied newer sets still have all those games but even more work.
mADjAckJ
Fair enough. I couldn't get the latest version of mame working so went back to that one.

Darkman042
I have the same problem! Did anyone ever figure this out? Mine actually works in MAME when not running launchbox. When I run MAME games through Launch box the controls are not recognized.

There should be zero difference between mame itself or mame loaded from Launchbox. The only way it could is if something is in the default command line in Launchbox for your mame emulator entry is somehow overriding it. Or you are using one of those non official GUI versions of mame, in which case its a bug in that version of mame, and can be fixed my copying your mame.ini file to the root of the mame folder. Darkman042
I wish that were the case, but for me there is. I have the mame.ini in the root folder already, and I tried taking out all of my command line arguments, but no dice. In MAME the controls work perfectly, but launching it with launch box they don't work. When the game starts, I can hit tab and see that the contols are still mapped, but the joysticks and buttons do nothing. I'm using Windows 10, and use SJ@JX usb encoders (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B083RTT51K/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) connected to arcade sticks and buttons. My MAME is an older version 0.122u1, but on it's own it works mint.
Darkman042
Just an update in case anyone stumbled across this thread looking for help. I finally fixed the problem by updating to the latest version of MAME (which right now is .261) and also I completely updated the ROM set as well which unbeknownst to most noobs is SUPER important! Google “archive.org: Files for mame-merged” 3rd result has torrent links.
