F. Krueger
Hey all. I'm totally new to Launch box. I have been using it a week and its totally awesome and I love it. I have set up my console systems which are working great. Im now looking at getting started setting up the Arcade systems (Mame). To save my self headaches down the track I though I should quickly check here to make sure I'm on the right path. I'm looking into using a Mame 0.214 Split Rom Set. with Mame 0.214, basically I was going to follow this official video YouTube, Unbroken Software LLC but using 0.214 Roms and Mame version My main questions before I start installing: Should I look at other options and use Mameui64? If I use Mameui64 the latest version is 0.188 does that mean I have to have a 0.188 rom set? Can the 0.214 split rom set be used with Mame 0.217 (Current Latest Version)? Can I use 0.214 split rom set with Mameui64 0.188? Thanks for any advice any direction would be much apreciated. Edited January 2, 2020 by F. Lordmonkus
1. You can use either, just make sure the mame.ini is in the main install folder with the mame executable 2. You should use the version of mame that matches your rom set to maximize compatibility. 3. It can but you may have some games not work. 4. See #3. My personal recommendation is to just use the standard version of Mame that matches your rom set. Setting up everything you need through the mame.ini using notepad is simple and pretty fast.
neil9000
1. I would mostly always recommend standard MAME, and not any derivatives, at least initially. 2, MAME UI is like any other version, match your romset. 3. See above. 4. See above.

If you are not seeing that version make sure you are on their site and not getting it from somewhere else.
F. Krueger
Wow that was a fast reply Thanks so much ⛪Lordmonkus Neil and Retro What you said aligns with what I'm thinking, Using standard Mame 0.214 with 0.214 rom set. Do I have to create the ini file? I have been watching the official YT video Installing via Launchbox "Full Set Importer" which I'm likely to follow, it doesn't mention the ini file, so I'm a little bit confused on that. Do I have to create the ini file? The ini will have to be generated. There are a couple ways. One way is to simply open Mame without a game. Go to configure options and then Save Configuration. Or @Lordmonkus guide he posted has steps as well as a batch file you can run.

F. Krueger
I have had a look at your guide and its great well written and easy to follow, I will be following it. Out of curiosity, what does the mame.ini file do? Is it only required if roms are located outside the mame rom folder?
Lordmonkus
It's where all the base settings for the emulator are stored. The rompath line tells the emulator where your roms are if you keep them outside of the \roms sub folder of your Mame install folder.
