delay-like bug behaviour

Hi folks.

I'm running LB 10.10 (this happened on 10.9 too though), and when I add a game to my library, or make any type of change to the database...LB will semi-freeze (all platforms greyed out, games greyed out)...until I scroll the platform wheel on the left downwards. Once it reaches the system I've been working on, everything starts working again as normal. I've a large-ish games list (just under 3k, all with media scraped etc)....and this only started happening as my library grew.

So for example, I'm browsing my SNES library, the platform wheel highlights the SNES system, and the games are shown on the right. I go through the process of adding a SNES game, and just as LB finishes scraping the metadata for the newly added game, the platform scroll bar shoots about half way up, all platforms get greyed out, all games grey out, and the new game isn't added. Once I scroll back down to the SNES platform on the left though, no matter how long I leave it, only then will LB finish adding the game, and full functionality is restored.

It's a bit annoying, but maybe it's to do with a large library? Any help appreciated!

What are your machines specs? LB should be able to move well with only 3K games. On one of my low end machines with 5K LB has no issue. Do you have Dynamic Box Sizing turned on? Try turning it off and see if it affects anything. Reason I ask specifically that, is you mentioned the scroll bar moving and that does happen with dynamic box on. The box sizing can cause some lag since LB has to resize the box images if you add games. Not saying that is your actual issue, but something to try.

@launcherbox are you talking about what happens at 2:25 in the vid below? for me its random happens longer/shorter sometimes not consistent.

It's only partially like that. That vid shows a momentary greying out, and a small delay, and then functionality is restored. With mine, the games stay greyed out, the platform wheel scrolls far up from where it was and stays there....and nothing happens until I scroll that wheen back down again.

I'm running an i7 7700K, 16GB DDR4 ram, and GTX1070. The system is about 3 years old and starting to show its age in todays multi-core world, but I'd have thought a 7700K was more than enough to keep LB happy with a library of about 3k games?

Yeah it should be. I have a couple less powerful machines with 7K or more games and get maybe a slight hiccup but nothing like what you described. So I would not think it was game volume related. Have you tried what I mentioned about the Dynamic Box sizing? This feature was a new one added that caused some performance issues and Jason refined it some. So that is also partially why I was thinking it could be something for you to test.

Oops, forgot! I'll try this now and get back to you...thanks both for the help!

I would take a look into how many Auto-Gen playlists you have. If you have a large number that process can take some time since all of them have to rebuild any time you make changes. If you know the playlists won't be changing you can set them up to be manual and that process won't have to happen and it will speed things up by quite a bit for you.

Perhaps that's it, but I'm not displaying any playlists (maybe they still auto-generate?). I'm using the Platform Category view, and I've got "All", "Arcade", "Computers", "Consoles", & "Handhelds" displayed there. Once I open any of the systems I'm just browsing my library of games for that system, no playlists. May I ask how I'd go about setting the playlist generation to manual?

Right click the playlist and hit edit. Third tab, checkbox at the top.

LaunchBox doesn't have any by default so if you haven't built any you won't have them.

Indeed, I haven't set any up so I've none to click on and edit. I've discovered here that if I simply go into Tools, & Options, then leave Options by hitting OK....the same freezing behaviour occurs, so I'm not even adding a game or making any changes & it's happening.

Here's a quick vid of it happening. You'll see at 25 seconds into the video that the games grey out and the games list can no longer be scrolled (hard to tell on camera but they're greyed out). Once I scroll the platform list though, bang, they all pop back and are ready to use again. All I've done is go into the options menu, and left it again, so I'm not changing anything.

I can confirm that I have this same issue although didn’t notice until this latest beta but I wasn’t doing much edit wise as of last few builds. It will basically prevent any edit right click actions until you scroll down to close to that platform entry in left scroll window and/or do some other command action in the menu directly. It basically acts as if stuck in some loop (versus say a complete program lockup).

Edit:  I haven't noticed it with most recent 10.11 Beta 4 and using the Default theme for LB.  Will play around with it some more to see if pops up again.

@C-Beats

This issue popped back up on Beta 5. When going to View, and then changing the "Image Group" to something different it did the same freeze behavior (didn't matter what selected). If I scroll down on left to the platform or do a menu action, it will "unfreeze".  Similar to what described above.  Oddly, didn't do on all platform/groupings. For example, it did it on all Pinball platforms but not Arcade.  I rolled back to Beta 4 and couldn't replicate.  Unfortunately, when I reinstalled Beta 5 to check again, I couldn't replicate it.   The same problem platforms now worked fine after reinstalled.  So now not sure if a reinstall of same version is a "fix" or the bug moved on temporarily to pop up later.  Will continue to play around and see what happens.

Great sundogak....keep us posted. I'd really, really, REALLY like to avoid a re-installation....I've put a LOT of effort into my setup/config, and am not sure I could bare doing it all again. Unless you can re-install over an existing installation and keep your settings (which you prob can considering that how updating works duh!)
