SiobonkeyKong
I've followed every thread here and elsewhere that I could find, and I can't get AetherSX2 to load anything via LaunchBox. I am seeing the error pointed out in the beginning of these threads: I've scanned my rom folder in AetherSX2 and then imported the same roms into LaunchBox. This method works great for PPSSPP, and it looks like it should work the same with AetherSX2. I've even tried just setting up AetherSX2 as a custom emulator in LaunchBox, but all that gets me is the app loaded to the main menu. Based on the developer's response to frontend support in that bootPath thread above, has he already done something to make the recent workaround not work? Or do I need to install different versions of either LaunchBox or AetherSX2? I'm using 1.5 of Launchbox and 1.2-2637 of Aether from Google Play. The Launchbox version looks to be more recent than Aether, so I'm not sure if the dev could have already undone it as he said he might. I'm on a Galaxy Z Fold 4 with Android 12. I don't have an SD card slot, so I'm stuck using internal support. Other threads suggest that may also be an issue. Anybody still having this problem or have any tips beyond the stuff discussed elsewhere?
Jason Carr
@SiobonkeyKong I just upgraded to the latest version and tested this and everything is working fine. However, you may need to start AetherSX2 manually and let it re-parse your ROM files after updating. The latest versions of both LaunchBox and AetherSX2 should be working fine if you use the built-in AetherSX2 emulator option. What device are you using? SiobonkeyKong
@Jason Carr, thank you very much for the reply! I'm on a Samsung Galaxy Fold 4. Here's what I just did, still without any luck: - Reinstalled Launchbox 1.5 - Deleted and reinstalled latest AetherSX2 from Google Play - Added PS2 folder to AetherSX2 (games launch and play fine) - Deleted PS2 library from Launchbox and re-added files from same location - Re-scanned in AetherSX2 This gives me the same path error I've been seeing. Is there something weird about how Samsung manages storage that would prevent this from working? Most of the success stories I see are from users on other devices like dedicated handhelds and such, and I wouldn't put it past Samsung to have something odd in here. Welp, I've been testing on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S8, so no, Samsung shouldn't be the issue. My ROMs are on an SD card and everything works properly. Where are your ROMs located? SiobonkeyKong
They're on internal storage. The Folds don't have an SD card slot which is a bummer. Is there a big difference in the handling of internal vs. external storage by apps? I know I've seen that brought up elsewhere here, maybe on Reddit. I'm pretty new to Android, and I don't have a great handle on this "scoped storage" thing I keep seeing. The games are here: Internal storage\Games\Roms\PlayStation 2\{title} (storage/emulated/0/Games/Roms/Playstation 2/{title}). That's the folder AetherSX2 and LaunchBox both scanned and imported the games from.

That's the folder AetherSX2 and LaunchBox both scanned and imported the games from. That's not known to be any different than what we use in our tests either. I've tested internal storage just the same. So I'm really not sure what the difference would be. You could try creating a new folder in the root of your internal storage instead, just in case that is the issue and permissions got screwed up somehow. But other than that, I really don't know why it wouldn't be working, unfortunately.
SiobonkeyKong
I moved the games to a new folder on the root of my device, and I even re-named the folders/files to get rid of spaces or any special characters, just in case. I re-scanned and re-added in Launchbox and Aether, and still no dice. It seems weird to me since PPSSPP is working flawlessly, and I assumed it was a similar situation as AetherSX2. If it just doesn't work for mystery reasons, them's the breaks, I suppose. Thank you very much for trying at all! Launchbox still gets all my love. Maybe it will mysteriously start working down the line, but having every other console in here is still pretty great.
faeran
What format are your games in?
SiobonkeyKong
They're all .iso.
SiobonkeyKong
Well, @faeran, big thanks go to you. Based on your question, I tried a .chd I had lying around, and that worked. It was a PS1 game, but I just lied to LaunchBox and it got AetherSX2 to load it just fine. I'm starting to compress my actual PS2 games now, and hopefully all will be well. Thank you so much! Out of curiosity, should .iso files work, or is .chd the way to go? Edit: I spoke too soon. For some reason, PS1 chd files will load in Aether, but PS2 ones will not. I get the same error as before. For example: - I import I-Ninja into Launchbox as a .chd. I do the same in Aether. - I try to play I-Ninja via LaunchBox and get the path error - I import Mega Man Legends.chd (PS1) into Aether - I change the rom path of I-Ninja in Launchbox to Mega Man Legends.chd file - Play "I-Ninja" via LaunchBox, AetherSX2 pops right up and loads the game. Granted, nothing happens past the boot screen, but it seems LaunchBox is able to tell Aether which file to load I tried it again with Strider 2 in .chd format, and that worked too. Aether attempts to boot it up. I assume if I could get it to try this with a PS2 game, all would be well. SiobonkeyKong
Okay, last post because I figured it out. I had my PS2 roms in subfolders within Games\Roms\PS2. I dropped I-Ninja.chd directly into the PS2 folder, re-scanned in Aether, and now it loads. What a silly thing this was. I guess that even though both Aether and LaunchBox scan subfolders, this doesn't give the correct permissions? Like whatever permissions are granted when pointing Aether to a folder are not extended to the subfolders even though it will still scan and load games within them. When I added one of the subfolders directly to Aether, that game would then load from within LaunchBox. Thanks again to you both, @faeran and @Jason Carr, for helping me get this figured out. If anybody else ever has this problem down the line, you will need to either add each game folder directly to Aether or not have your game files in subfolders. C-Beats
AetherSx2 is no longer officially supported by it's developer and is actively (and intentionally) being made worse via the Play Store to break existing functionality and add adware to the application. Older versions work just fine, I doubt we (LaunchBox) will be able to really do much with this emulator moving forward as it's actively being developed to discourage it's use by any user, let alone one using a frontend (something the dev openly despised even when the application was still supported). Jason Carr
Yeah, you will likely need an older version. If you do some Googling online it should point you in the right direction.

tallpr24
yea, you know whats interesting? AetherSx2 will launch some games directly from launchbox, but some it will take you the AetherSx2 main screen. really strange. oh well, on ward!! lol
