About This File

Following @CriticalCid awesome Unified theme project, and so you can seamlessly transition from the theme to the emulator, this pack consists of each of the +200 system backgrounds, made as overlays in 1080p, 3 variations each.

IMPORTANT (In case you will be using these pngs with Retroarch):

  • Overlays require at least one image (.png) and a configuration file (.cfg) in order to activate them.
  • The configuration file should have the exact same name as the image file.
  • DO NOT use spaces in the filenames (for this pack you will need to remove the spaces from the file names).
  • These files (the png and its corresponding cfg) should be placed together in the libretro overlay folder.
  • In order to activate an overlay, go to the RetroArch Settings menu. Find the Onscreen Display submenu. From this menu you can activate the Overlay system and select which overlay file to display.

Example:

  • 4:3 with integer scale

Congratulations Kondorito! This is an awesome work! And it's just what I was looking for! My current overlays are based on the systems itselfs, which I like, but they have the typical curvature emulating an old crt tv that I think it looks ugly and unnecessary. I'm using «fakelottes» shader (which is fantastic and it makes the games look as it should) but without the curvature. So yes, this overlays match better and they look super modern. What I was looking for is a flat overly with integer scale and if it had shadows, even better, and that's just what you made!

Only problem I found is that not all the systems reach the 4:3 aspect ratio (as NES, SNES and PC-Engine), so the image get stretch, and the feeling is similar to what happen playing a 4:3 game in a 16:9 screen.

I don't know if you are still on this, but if it's not too much to ask, could you please do a correct aspect ratio of:

(I specify first the supposed original resolution just as reference):

NES (two versions: x4 and x4.5 in order fo fill more screen with same proportions)
Original resolution: 256x240
Oiginal resolution with 8px H and 8px V cropped: 240x224
cropped resolution X4: 960x896 (15:14 DAR)
cropped resolution x4,5: 1080x1008

SNES (two versions: x4 and x4.5 in order fo fill more screen with same proportions)
Original resolution: 256x224
Original resolution X4: 1024x896 (8:7 DAR)
Original resolution X4.5: 1152x1008

PC-Engine / PC-Engine CD (Three versions: no-cropped x4 for vertical games, cropped x4.5 for horizontal games, and x4.5 in order to fill more screen with same proportions)
Original resolution: 256×240
Original resolution X4: 1024x960 (16:15 DAR)
Cropped original resolution: 256x224
Cropped resolution X4: 1024x896 (8:7 DAR)
Cropped resolution X4.5: 1152x1008

Handhelds (10:9):
GB 160x144 / 800x720 (x5) (10:9 DAR)
GBC 160x144 / 800x720 (x5) (10:9 DAR)
Gamegear 160x144 / 800x720 (x5) (10:9 DAR)

GBA (two versions: x4 and x5):
GBA original resolution: 240x160
GBA original resolution x4: 960x640 (3:2 DAR)
GBA original resolution x5: 1200x800 (3:2 DAR)

VirtualBoy: 384x224  / 1536x896 (x4) (12:7 DAR)
